Resource Of The Week: The Survival Podcast

As my blogging for the week draws to a close, I’m going to combine a “how-to” and a “resource of the week” piece together. Back in February, I indicated that I listen to a few podcasts on a weekly basis that focus on financial and personal safety and growth. One of these was the Finanical Sense Newshour, which I discussed on February 18. Another is The Survival Podcast, which is hosted by modern survivalist Jack Spirko. From the website:

The Survival Podcast is a daily online audio show about self sufficiency and self reliance in the modern world. I conceived and created this podcast because over the years I have come to realize how fragile the human condition and the United States economy really is.

From June 2008 – December 2009 I recorded the show during my 50 mile commute between Arlington and Frisco Texas. I now run the show as my full time business and record it each morning in my home office.

Some of the very early editions of this Podcast don’t have the best audio quality but I over time I have updated my recording equipment. Recording a podcast while driving on the interstate was a challenge but I have found it both enjoyable and a way to reclaim some of the three hours I loose each day. I decided to give it a try after I found Think Future News a Libertarian minded Podcast hosted by Chris Future (who just plain kicks ass) who also records his show while on the road.

The Guiding Concepts The Survival Podcast are Based On Include

1. Debt is cancer, it is killing our economy and killing the dreams of many Americans. There may be little you can do about the total national debt but you can control your own debt. Do so now!

2. Protecting the environment is a good thing and it should be done. That said climate change is not our most immediate danger. We are not all going to die from global warming, the evidence that carbon is the cause is thin at best. The biggest cause of the green house effect is water vapor, don’t come here looking for activist environmentalism, you will be disappointed.

3. In spite of our view expressed above we are huge supporters of alternative energy such as wind and solar. Primarily because they help to provide more self sufficiency and economic long term stability. The danger of oil is its finite nature and inability to meet long term global demand.

4. Always be frugal, never be “cheap”. One protects your financial position the other always costs you more in the long run.

5. No matter what the sheeple tell you, what you do does matter and you do control your own destiny. Live life to the fullest and understand that you have more control over your life then anyone or anything else.

I can’t remember how I first heard about the podcast- but I’m glad I did. Spirko publishes new episodes several times a week. And they’re chock-full of useful information for the novice through expert homesteader/prepper/survivalist- or someone who just wants to be more self-sufficient in their daily living.

For example, Episode 617, “Survival Podcast Listener Calls,” was released earlier today and addressed the following topics:

• Finding more information on hugelkultur
• When is the time right to buy additional land for a BOL or Homestead
• Understanding reciprocity and different state regulations with concealed carry
• Why you should always be willing to “take the shot” when you get the chance
• 401K investing, basics, advanced thinking and lies and myths
• Health concerns during a big SHTF
• A warning to those hyperfocused on TEOTWAWKI in Hollywood form
• How the world has ended as we know it in the lifetimes of most adults
• Back up heating options
• Building a cabin with telephone polls or landscape timbers
• Dealing with human waste in a long term or short term disaster
• Income reduction how, when and why it makes sense
• Thoughts on charity in conventional and unconventional forms
• Thoughts on nitrogen and hugelkultur and the problem that doesn’t exist
• Thoughts on plantings for pond and lake shores

As I mentioned, Spirko refers to himself as a “modern survivalist.” And The Survival Podcast is formulated around a number of principles of modern survival philosophy.

As recent as last month, Spirko reminded TSP listeners of the core principles of modern survivalism. Here’s what he had to say on the website about Episode 603, “12 Planks of Modern Survivalism,” which was released on February 10, 2011:

Today we are going to revisit the 12 core principles of modern survival philosophy that I have built the entire TSP community on. Every question I get by email and every call I answer on the air is done with these 12 tenets of modern survivalism in mind. Even if you are a long time listener and think you have heard this all before I encourage you to listen to today’s show as these fundamentals are the most important information I can provide you when it comes to being truly prepared.

Join me today as we discuss…

• Prepare for Everything Including Nothing Going Wrong
• Debt Is Cancer Kill It
• Grow and Produce Some of Your Own Food
• Tax Is Theft Pay Only What You Must
• Stored Food is a Safe Investment
• Understand Disaster Probability and Commonality
• Green Energy Is For Independence Not Saving Polar Bears
• Own Land and Make It Produce
• Utilize Pragmatic Preparations
• Have a Means of Defense
• Have Full Documentation for Any Disaster Need
• Develop Your Own Plan

I can’t say enough good things about The Survival Podcast. Spirko does a fantastic job at synthesizing the gobs of information out there and putting it all together into a cohesive and comprehensible show. And I hardly ever nod off listening to the podcast due to Spirko’s passion for the material he covers. Like Jim Puplava and the Financial Sense Newshour, Jack Spirko provides a tremendous public service with the The Survival Podcast. Highly recommended.

The Survival Podcast can be accessed here. If you intend to start listening to the podcast on a regular basis, it might be a good idea to check out that episode about the 12 core principles of modern survival philosophy to help you understand where Spirko is coming from. Episode 603 can be listened to here.
