Preppers Still Active, And In The News

I happened to stumble on an interesting TV news segment this afternoon on preppers in Oregon. Wesleigh Ogle for CBS affiliate KCBY-TV in North Bend, Oregon, had this to report on December 27:

KCBY-TV Video

I’m really glad that Avery found his “prepper’s paradise.” It looks beautiful- and full of resources- out there in the Northwest.

On Christmas Day, I also came across an article about active military preppers on the UPI website. From the Deep South:

We evidently dodged the Mayan end-of-the-world bullet, but so-called preppers in the United States say they’ll stay prepared nonetheless.

Navy Times reported last week people such as Gunnery Sgt. David Williams of Gulfport, Miss., who are part of the preppers movement — people who say they intend to be prepared for whatever calamities befall us — don’t care if you think they’re crazy. They just take comfort in their stockpiles of food, water, weapons and other vital supplies.

“A lot of the guys in my unit think I’m crazy. I’ll push the zombie apocalypse and the whole 2012 end-of-the-world business. I don’t really believe any of that crap, but it makes it fun,” Williams, a member of a Navy Seabee construction unit who has served in Afghanistan, told the newspaper. “When you’re planning for the zombie apocalypse, you’re still planning.

“Survival really is a community effort. If you’re just one dude or one family living in a bunker, what are you living for? What’s the point? What are [you] trying to stick around for? You might as well go out with everybody else because there isn’t going to be anything when you climb out of your hole.”

Williams — who has served as an instructor at the Marine Corps’ Mountain Warfare Training Center in Bridgeport, Calif., and has been a survival, evasion, resistance and escape instructor — has written the Survivology 101 blog for the past three years.

“If we all die together, we all die together,” Williams said. “But if we make it through, we become a strong community and we rebuild. It may not be the diehard survival mentality, but there has to be something to live for, too. You have to have something more than yourself; otherwise, you’re a sociopath and probably don’t need to be living anyway.”

Like with a lot of things in life, preppers seem to come in all shapes and sizes.

Defeated Illinois Anti-Gun Legislators Pushing New ‘Draconian Gun Ban’ As Early As Wednesday?

Just when I thought I was done talking about gun rights issues for the day, there’s this from the National Rifle Association Institute for Legislative Action website today:

URGENT: Illinois Anti-Gun Legislators That YOU Voted Out of Office to Use Their Last Remaining Days in Legislature Exploiting Lame Duck Session and Holiday Break To Impose a Draconian Gun Ban

The NRA-ILA has just learned that anti-gun legislators backed by Governor Quinn are deceptively trying to sneak through a new draconian gun ban as early as Wednesday while the legislature convenes for the Lame Duck Session from January 2 to 9. You voted many of these anti-gun legislators out of office, and now, in their last days as law makers, they want to quietly trample on the rights of all law-abiding gun owners in Illinois. It is imperative that you contact your state legislators IMMEDIATELY and continue to do so over the next few days. The Lame Duck Session will end on January 9, so this bill will be moving at lightning speed through both the House and Senate, with very little time to spare. Your phone call or email will play an important role in halting this assault on your Second Amendment rights.

The NRA-ILA will continue to send updates on this matter as details become available to us. However, it is of the utmost importance that you act NOW to stop this gun ban and registration scheme. Call and email IMMEDIATELY and let your voice be heard on this matter.

To reach the main line for the Illinois General Assembly, please call 217.782.2000.

Contact information for your state legislators can be found by clicking here.

‘High-Capacity’ Ammunition Magazine Ban Bill To Be Introduced Thursday In U.S. House

Gun “control” looks to be a priority for some on the first day of the new Congress. On December 17, Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) announced she would introduce legislation for a new “assault weapons” ban on the day the 113th Congress first meets. And right before this weekend, Democrats in the House of Representatives announced they would be introducing legislation that very same day that would ban Americans from buying or transferring “high-capacity” ammunition magazines. Sam Stein reported on the Huffington Post website on Friday:

House Democrats will introduce legislation to ban the production of high-capacity magazines on the first day of the next congressional session, the office of Rep. Diana DeGette (D-Colo.), one of the lawmakers sponsoring the bill, told The Huffington Post.

The Large Capacity Ammunition Feeding Device Act will mirror a failed bill introduced during the 112th Congress…

The bill Democrats will introduce would limit magazines, belts, drums, feed strips and “similar device[s]” to 10 rounds of ammunition. It would allow people to hold on to the “large capacity ammunition feeding device[s]” that they currently own, but prohibit them from buying others or transferring the ones they have.

Call me crazy, but something tells me the bad guys won’t be hindered by either of these proposed bans. In fact, in the event the criminals are ever short “hi-cap” mags, don’t be surprised to hear tales of them mastering super-fast magazine changes on the “low-capacity” ones they brought along in more numbers.

Chicago Has Less Beat Cops Now Than Before Rahm Emanuel Became Mayor

“Chicago readers take note: The ‘thin blue line’ that exists in the Windy City will likely remain that way for the foreseeable future. Carry on accordingly.”

-Survival and Prosperity, October 3, 2011

After reporting on Chicago tallying its 500th murder for the year last week, one of the major local papers is pointing out there are less beat cops on the streets of Chicago these days than before Rahm Emanuel become mayor. Frank Main and Dan Mihalopoulos wrote on the Chicago Sun-Times website early this morning:

Despite promises of staffing increases, the Chicago Police Department has fewer beat officers in patrol districts across the city than before Mayor Rahm Emanuel took office, a Chicago Sun-Times analysis of city data has found.

Days after he was sworn into office last year, Emanuel announced the start of what he described as a major shift in how the police department assigns officers across the city. He promised to fulfill a campaign pledge by assigning 1,000 more cops to high-crime areas without reducing the police presence in other parts of the city.

“We cannot beat crime without more officers on the beat,” the mayor said then.

That was May 2011.

But, as of Oct. 15, a total of 6,638 rank-and-file officers were assigned to police beats citywide, down from 6,746 beat cops at the start of 2011, according to the data obtained by the Sun-Times.

No big surprise here. I’ve been blogging about claims of a manpower shortage in the Chicago Police Department for more than a year now.

A must-read piece for my fellow Chicagoans, which is located on the Sun-Times website here.

As for Main and Mihalopoulos. Dead fish for you, and for you.

Jim Rogers: ‘I Hope We All Survive 2013’

“We’ve had very difficult times. We’re going to continue to have difficult times. You better makes sure you know what you’re doing.”

-Jim Rogers, in a December 23 Kitco News interview

Well-known investor Jim Rogers spoke to Daniela Cambone of Kitco News back on December 23 about his investment outlook for 2013. The former partner of George Soros in the Quantum Fund discussed gold and currencies, among other things.

When Cambone asked Rogers if he was buying gold now, Rogers replied:

No, I am not buying gold. I am not selling gold. I am sitting and watching it.

The Singapore-based investor added that while he does own some U.S. dollars, he owns more Swiss Francs than any other currency these days.

“Jim Rogers’ Gold Outlook for 2013”
YouTube Video

While wrapping up the interview, Jim Rogers told viewers:

I hope we all survive 2013.

That comment reminds me of something I blogged back on October 18:

Famous investor Jim Rogers appeared on the Yahoo! Finance show Breakout yesterday, and warned viewers of the following:

It’s going to get worse next year. 2013, 2014, you should be very worried and you should prepare yourself.

Yikes! I don’t think I’ve ever heard the Singapore-based investor ever mutter anything like “prepare yourself” before.

And I’ve been following him religiously for some years now.

CNN Grills Jesse Jackson About Expanding Chicago-Style Gun ‘Control’ To Rest Of Nation

The repeated demand by high-ranking Democrats for more “common-sense” gun “control” should allow for common-sense questions to be asked. CNN had one of Chicago’s more well-known “reverends” on this morning- the Reverend Jesse Jackson- and the host proceeded to ask him about why Chicago-style (strict) gun “control” should be implemented on a larger scale across the country considering the high-level of gun-related violence there (as I type this, Chicago is “officially” at 499 murders for the year, with 87 percent of those homicides firearm-related).

Jackson tried to avoid answering the common-sense question, but the CNN host stopped him with the following:

Reverend. Reverend Jackson, I’m going to make one more turn at this question, because the original question was, Chicago has some of the strictest and most tough gun laws in the country. If this level of gun laws doesn’t work in Chicago, and you still have the guns coming from outside the city in, and now you’ve got 500 homicides this year, what is the argument to extending this nationally and to other cities?

The famous civil rights activist still couldn’t come up with a good answer.

The CNN host concluded:

Chicago has tough laws. It isn’t working.

Chicago Police Department Says Only 499 Murders In 2012

I can’t say I’m too surprised to hear the following. From Jeremy Gorner and Peter Nickeas on the Chicago Tribune website this afternoon:

Hours after Chicago police listed the shooting death of a West Side man as the city’s 500th homicide of the year, the department backtracked and said the city has yet to reach the grim milestone.

Superintendent Garry McCarthy had told the Tribune Thursday afternoon that the homicide count stood at 499. Hours later, Nathaniel T. Jackson, 40, was gunned down outside a store in the Austin neighborhood and the department confirmed Friday morning that his death was the 500th homicide. Mayor Rahm Emanuel released a statement noting that “Chicago has reached an unfortunate and tragic milestone.”

But then the department issued its own statement calling reports of the tally inaccurate, saying the number remained at 499. Asked for clarification, a spokeswoman for the superintendent said one of the homicide cases from earlier this week has been reclassified as a death investigation.

“Death investigation.”

Something tells me Chicago might not “officially” see 500 murders in 2012.

Early this morning, Second City Cop had a few choice words for Mayor Emanuel, Superintendent McCarthy, the local press, the reverends, and CPD leadership about seemingly reaching that milestone in homicides:

So a big congratulations to Rahm Emanuel and Garry McCompStat. You’ve proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that the number of police officers has a direct correlation to the amount of blood running through the street gutters of Chicago. All your spouting off about “properly utilizing the officers we have” and “highest per capita” statistical nonsense? Bullshit. And sitting idly by while the media and reverends crucify officers and allowing years worth of incompetent “merit” promotions run amok throughout the Department? If it wasn’t part of some Grand Plan to destroy the Chicago Police Department, that was the consequence anyway.

Ouch.

I wonder if SCC has another congratulatory statement warming up in the bullpen should we get to that 500 murder mark again?

Chicago Reaches 500 Murders In 2012

Chicago is notorious for its strict gun “control.”

And yet, the “Windy City” just reached a grizzly milestone last night with its 500th murder this year.

(Editor’s note: Crime in Chicago blog says we’re at 527)

With 87 percent of these homicides being firearm-related (Washington Post, December 21).

From Jeremy Gorner and Peter Nickeas this morning on the Chicago Tribune website:

[Nathaniel T. Jackson’s] death was apparently the 500th homicide in Chicago this year, marking a grim milestone. The city last reached that toll in 2008…

As of Thursday night, homicides were up 17 percent over last year in Chicago, and shootings had increased by 11 percent, according to police statistics.

Hunter Clauss and Jordan Owen added the following on the Chicago Sun-Times website:

A 40-year-old man fatally shot in the Austin neighborhood Thursday night was the city’s 500th homicide of 2012, authorities said…

The last year the city’s homicide total reached 500 was in 2008, when 512 people were killed, according to police department records.

So, where does the City go from here?

Let me guess. Chicagoans will be lectured on how more gun “control” is needed.

‘Summary Of 2013 Feinstein Assault Weapons Legislation’ Calls For Gun Registration Besides Bans

New information about U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein’s promised new gun “control” legislation that seeks to ban “assault weapons” and “high-capacity” ammunition magazines has just been released. The California Democrat shares a summary of her proposed bill, entitled “Summary of 2013 Feinstein Assault Weapons Legislation,” on her Senate website. And by the looks of things, it seeks more than just bans. From Senator Feinstein’s website:

Summary of 2013 legislation

Following is a summary of the 2013 legislation:

Bans the sale, transfer, importation, or manufacturing of:
• 120 specifically-named firearms
• Certain other semiautomatic rifles, handguns, shotguns that can accept a detachable magazine and have one military characteristic
• Semiautomatic rifles and handguns with a fixed magazine that can accept more than 10 rounds

Strengthens the 1994 Assault Weapons Ban and various state bans by:
• Moving from a 2-characteristic test to a 1-characteristic test
• Eliminating the easy-to-remove bayonet mounts and flash suppressors from the characteristics test
• Banning firearms with “thumbhole stocks” and “bullet buttons” to address attempts to “work around” prior bans

Bans large-capacity ammunition feeding devices capable of accepting more than 10 rounds.

Protects legitimate hunters and the rights of existing gun owners by:
• Grandfathering weapons legally possessed on the date of enactment
• Exempting over 900 specifically-named weapons used for hunting or sporting purposes and
• Exempting antique, manually-operated, and permanently disabled weapons

Requires that grandfathered weapons be registered under the National Firearms Act, to include:
• Background check of owner and any transferee;
• Type and serial number of the firearm;
• Positive identification, including photograph and fingerprint;
• Certification from local law enforcement of identity and that possession would not violate State or local law; and
• Dedicated funding for ATF to implement registration

Note that part about “requires that grandfathered weapons be registered under the National Firearms Act.”

(Editor’s note: Italics added for emphasis)

The discussion of the bill summary can be found on her website here. A .pdf of the bill summary is here.

S&P/Case-Shiller: Chicago-Area Home Prices Decline Again

Data through October 2012 from the Standard & Poor’s/Case-Shiller home price indices paints a not-too-pretty picture for Chicago-area residential real estate. Sandra Guy wrote on the Chicago Sun-Times website yesterday:

The Chicago-area housing market continued to lag national numbers, posting the largest non-seasonally adjusted single-home price decline — 1.5 percent from September to October and 1.3 percent year-over-year — of 20 major cities in the Standard & Poor’s/Case-Shiller national home price index released Wednesday.

Of the 20 cities, 12 saw housing prices drop.

(Editor’s note: Italics added for emphasis)

Recent rising prices have led to claims the U.S. housing market is in recovery-mode.

However, doubts remain. AnnaMaria Andriotis reported on the MarketWatch website on December 20:

But experts say that spike is largely due to the limited number of homes on the market. There were about two million existing homes available for sale at the end of November, which equates to the lowest housing supply since September 2005, according to the NAR. With fewer homes to choose from, buyers intent on purchasing a property are more inclined to offer a higher price or engage in bidding wars, housing analysts say, which ultimately drives prices up.

The problem is this limited inventory underscores a weakness in the housing market: Many sellers have resisted putting their home up for sale, out of concern that it will sell for far less than they paid for it, says Jack McCabe, an independent housing analyst in Deerfield Beach, Fla. That’s set off a domino effect. Because they’ve held off, supply has remained limited, in turn pushing prices up. “Prices have gone up in the last year because of this temporary, artificial market,” he says…

Separately, in some neighborhoods, median or average sales prices are rising because the mix of homes selling has been shifting toward higher-end, more expensive properties — not necessarily because the value of the typical home is rising, says Jed Kolko, chief economist at Trulia.com, a real-estate listing site. Sales of existing single-family homes priced at $1 million or more increased 52% in November from a year ago, a trend that’s been in play for most of the year, according to the NAR.

(Editor’s note: Italics added for emphasis)

More later on these doubts…

Motorola CEO: Illinois ‘Asleep At The Switch, And The Day Of Reckoning Will Come’

You know the state of Illinois has real fiscal challenges when a member of the U.S. President’s Management Advisory Board (PMAB) says that’s the case. Greg Brown, President and CEO of Schaumburg-based Motorola Solutions, spoke to Crain’s Chicago Business last week and said the following about his company’s relationship to the Midwestern state:

Illinois remains front and center for us for a variety of reasons: incumbency, skills that are resident, our existing footprint. It’s Illinois’ to lose, but Illinois is on a path to lose it. The state of Illinois is asleep at the switch, and the day of reckoning will come. You can’t have the state’s fiscal house being what it is and be able to attract capital. If Illinois kicks the can and stays in a four-corner offense, then capital will move out of state, including ours. I’ve had governors of Florida and Michigan proactively call me and say: “Would you consider moving a division, opening a plant? Would you consider moving R&D here? Would you deploy a sales division here?” Illinois doesn’t think like that. It needs a complete overhaul. It needs to happen soon.

Judging by the continued inaction in Springfield (seat of Illinois government) on issues of significant fiscal importance to the state and its 12.9 million residents, something tells me that can will keep being kicked down the road until the “day of reckoning” Brown talked about finally arrives.

In the meantime, the State of Illinois continues to languish.

Consider what Ted Dabrowski, Vice President of Policy at the Illinois Policy Institute, wrote back on November 28 on the organization’s website:

Today, Illinois still has more than $9 billion in unpaid bills. The Legislature continues to run structural deficits, appropriating more funds than the revenues it receives. The state’s pension systems are more than $200 billion in the hole and facing insolvency. And the state has been downgraded 10 times by the three major rating agencies since Gov. Quinn took office.

I am truly concerned about what lies in store for the “Land of Lincoln” going forward.

Merry Christmas

Just wanted to wish those who observe it a very Merry Christmas.

New material will be published on the blog tomorrow.

By the way, late Monday the United Nations, with the Obama administration’s support, voted overwhelmingly to restart discussions on the proposed Arms Trade Treaty. A conference is planned for March.

Christmas Eve. When many Americans were busy preparing for or engaged in celebrations. Coincidence?

Talk Of Gun Confiscation, Compulsory ‘Buy-Backs’

Recent talk of banning “assault weapons” and “high-capacity” ammunition magazines has turned into discussion about gun confiscation and compulsory “buy-backs” by leading Democrats.

(Editor’s note: How can government buy back something it never owned in the first place?)

There’s talk of confiscation and a compulsory “buy-back” in the state of New York. Thomas Kaplan reported on The New York Times website last Thursday that New York’s Democratic Governor Andrew Cuomo had discussed gun “control” in an interview on an Albany radio station that same day. Kaplan wrote:

In the interview, Mr. Cuomo did not offer specifics about the measures he might propose, but, while discussing assault weapons, he said: “Confiscation could be an option. Mandatory sale to the state could be an option. Permitting could be an option — keep your gun but permit it.”

(Editor’s note: Italics added for emphasis)

Confiscation. Compulsory “buy-back.”

No mention of an option to not implement more gun “control” in the state of New York.

And speaking of gun confiscation- but on a national level- CBS New York ran the following on their website this past Saturday:

Amid talk of reinstating the assault weapons ban that expired eight years ago, police departments nationwide are thinking of ways to confiscate such weapons.

As WCBS 880’s Marla Diamond reported, among the departments considering taking action is the NYPD. Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said if Congress were to reinstate the ban, police are wondering whether it will be their responsibility to confiscate them.

(Editor’s note: Italics added for emphasis)

“Police departments nationwide are thinking of ways to confiscate such weapons.”

I don’t think owners of “assault weapons” will be too happy to hear that.

There’s also chatter about a potential national compulsory gun “buy-back.” Joel Gehrke reported on the Washington Examiner website on Friday:

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., said that she and other gun control advocates are considering a law that would create a program to purchase weapons from gun owners, a proposal that could be compulsory.

We are also looking at a buy-back program,” Feinstein said today in a press conference. “Now, again, this is a work in progress so these are ideas in the development.”

(Editor’s note: Italics added for emphasis)

Gun confiscations and compulsory “buy-backs.”

What next?
