Chicago Shootings Reach 1,000 For Year, Faster Than ‘Violent’ 2012

Shootings in Chicago have been making national headlines for some time now.

2012 was particularly bloody in Chicago, when homicides totaled just north of 500 at year-end (87 percent of them firearm-related).

By the beginning of February 2013, the Reverend Jesse Jackson, Sr., and the Chicago-based Rainbow PUSH Coalition were calling for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to patrol the streets of the city.

Now there’s this from the Chicago Tribune website on June 9. Quinn Ford reported:

The number of people shot in the city this year passed 1,000.

Chicago has hit the somber milestone even sooner than the violent year of 2012, when the city saw 500 homicides for the first time since 2008. Shootings that year were up 11 percent. The city reached the 1,000 mark on June 9 in 2012. In 2013 it was on June 26 and last year it was on June 15.

This year, Chicago passed the mark sometime late Thursday into early Friday morning, according to data collected and analyzed by the Chicago Tribune…

(Editor’s note: Bold added for emphasis)

According to CNSNews.com on February 15, 2013, Chicago suffered 2,460 shootings in 2012- or one every 3.57 hours that year.

Seeing that the city just surpassed 1,000 shootings faster than even three years ago, 2015 has a good chance of ending up being bloodier than 2012.
