Blacksmith Classes Being Offered In Chicago’s West Suburbs This Fall

August’s survival-related training in the Chicago area has been covered (drawing on the info I have at my disposal right now- updates later?) So let’s look out a bit into autumn.

Now’s here a skill I’d like to learn, particularly if life ever gets “medieval” around here. From the website of the Lisle Park District (Lisle’s a west suburb of Chicago):

Blacksmith Classes

The Museums at Lisle Station Park host several blacksmith classes throughout the year… All classes are at the Blacksmith Shop, 921 School Street in Lisle. The blacksmith shop barn once stood in Wisconsin. The 19th century building was disassembled, shipped and reassembled on our grounds. This historical building is where volunteers teach the art of blacksmithing throughout the year.

Here’s the instruction that’s being offered in September. From the park district site:

Basic Elements of Blacksmithing I

Location: Blacksmith Shop – 921 School Street, Lisle
Learn the processes of upsetting, drawing a taper, fullering, twisting and scrolling in our Blacksmith Shop. Bring home your own handmade project from this 3 hour class! Our blacksmiths will supply materials and safety equipment. It is suggested that you provide your own gloves and safety glasses for personal fit and comfort, though we will provide standard gloves and safety glasses. You must wear leather shoes and clothing made of natural fibers, long sleeves are suggested. Age: 18 & up.

From what’s displayed on the web page, the instruction (once again, consisting of 3 hours total) will be offered on two different dates- Tuesday, September 22, 2015, from 6:30 to 9:30 PM, or Thursday, September 24, 2015, also from 6:30 to 9:30 PM.

Cost is $40 resident/$50 non-resident.

Additional blacksmith classes are offered later in the fall- Basic Elements of Blacksmithing II in October, Basic Elements of Blacksmithing III in November, and Basic Blacksmith Seasonal Project in December.

For more information on this blacksmith instruction and/or to enroll, visit the Lisle Park District website here.
