Signs Of The Time, Part 89

Nonsensical visions of a nationwide push for BB gun “control” and panic buying of Daisy Red Ryders came to mind as I read the following from David Chanen over at the Star Tribune (Minneapolis-Saint Paul) website yesterday.

What’s that? It’s the scary looking semi-automatic BB guns that are to be banned, not the lever-actions? Oh, okay.

Chanen wrote Monday:

A small BB gun found in a felon’s car has been ruled a firearm by the Minnesota Court of Appeals, and its possession means more prison time for him.

Since 1977, the state’s two appellate courts have repeatedly agreed with the Legislature that a BB gun is a firearm when involved in various crimes, such as drive-by shootings.

As the result of a 2005 felony drug conviction, David Lee Haywood wasn’t supposed to have a handgun. The BB gun was found in his glove compartment during a traffic stop in 2013.

He was found guilty of a felony in Ramsey County District Court and received a mandatory minimum of five years in prison…

(Editor’s note: Bold added for emphasis)

Chanen noted that Haywood owned “a Walther CP99 Compact .177-caliber BB gun.”

In other words, a BB gun powered by a CO2 (carbon dioxide gas) canister.

Funny. I thought firearms were defined as such if the projectile is discharged by an “explosive.”

Awesooome, but definitely NOT a firearm

I understand Haywood’s case is going to be appealed before Minnesota’s state Supreme Court.

In the meantime, I better head over to the PyramydAir website to “stock up” before their Fall Clearance Sale (100+ products up to 61% off) wraps up today.
