Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel To ‘Kneel Before Zod’- Donald J. Trump?

The editorial board at Crain’s Chicago Business published the following about Chicago’s impending loss of clout in Washington, D.C., on the Crain’s website this past Saturday:

Chicago residents, regardless of their personal politics, are going to miss having one of their own in the White House.

As President Barack Obama moves on to his post-presidential life, he takes with him the last vestiges of our once-formidable clout in the nation’s capital. Chicagoans have become accustomed to the idea that, with the right connections, they can be just a phone call away from the highest levels of power. With the incoming Trump administration, that’s about to change

(Editor’s note: Bold added for emphasis)

Regular readers of Survival And Prosperity may recall what I blogged back on December 7:

If readers still don’t think there will be repercussions to Chicago from a Trump administration despite its unabashed support for Hillary Clinton on Election Day (the Democrat received 83.63% of the city’s votes on Election Day), its official policy of providing “sanctuary” to illegal aliens, and political grandstanding (Trump’s honorary street signs downtown were removed this past weekend, courtesy of the City Council), then consider what was published on the Bloomberg website yesterday:

“Chicago Faces Political Power Outage as Trump Succeeds Obama”

Chicago is racing the clock.

Nowhere will political power evaporate more dramatically at noon on Jan. 20 than in the third-largest U.S. city, a bastion of Democratic power that’s enjoyed special access to Washington during President Barack Obama’s eight years in the White House.

When Donald Trump becomes the 45th president, Chicago will trade a first family and top advisers with deep ties to the city for a chief executive who has repeatedly called it a violent mess embodying the failed policies of his predecessor and the Democratic Party…

Not since the era of Abraham Lincoln have Chicago and Illinois enjoyed such strong ties to the White House and Washington. Obama’s exit will bring an end to that

I wrote back on November 11 in a post entitled “Chicago Could Lose Billions In Federal Funding Under Trump Administration”:

Drip. Drip. Drip.

That’s the sound of federal funds to the “City By The Lake” drying up.

A real possibility. And a lot of moolah at stake…

Crain’s editorial board brought up the much-publicized planned renovation of Chicago’s Union Station in their piece. They penned:

As City Hall pushes for federal funding to revamp Union Station—a project that will require Trump administration support—Chicago may soon learn the limits of its clout in this new era.

(Editor’s note: Bold added for emphasis)

If the presence of Trump International Hotel & Tower in downtown Chicago isn’t enough to gain the President-elect’s support for the renovation, then I wouldn’t be surprised if Trump requires the city to renounce its “sanctuary city” status and/or other concessions he deems important before federal funds are made available.

Will Mayor Emanuel be forced to “kneel before Zod”?

Stay tuned…

Chicago Tribune Letter: ‘Chicago, And Its Surrounding Areas, Have Become Hell on Earth’

This morning I headed over to the Chicago Tribune website to see what’s cooking locally. On their homepage was a “story” link with the following headline:

“Letter: I’m leaving Chicago and I’m never coming back”

Figuring this should make some “entertaining” reading while I finished my coffee, I checked out the proclamation. The author sure didn’t pull any punches. Here’s a snippet:

I’ve come to understand that Chicago, and its surrounding areas, have become Hell on Earth for any thinking person with a modicum of self-respect.

The caustic combination of corrupt politicians with nothing but contempt for the public; a police force so broken down in spirit it visibly resents interaction with even law-abiding citizens; a criminal underclass empowered by the incessant drone of liberal rhetoric wandering the streets posing clear and present danger to everyone around them; and the enablers, who are everywhere, to say nothing of the ugly, decaying infrastructure, poor economy and joyless entertainment and leisure opportunities – it is for these reasons I have made the decision to disconnect forever…

(Editor’s note: Bold added for emphasis)

As regular readers of Survival And Prosperity know, I am one of those who left Chicago (Northwest Side) only three-and-a-half years ago due to concerns over increasing government mismanagement, crime, and costs of living- in no particular order. Besides, even though I really liked the neighborhood I had lived in for eight years, it was time for a new pad and home prices were just too damn high!

My girlfriend and I did what was right for us at the time and in advance of what we suspect lies ahead. But Chicago is still a great city with fantastic people (minus the criminal element), so much so not only do I understand why one might still choose to reside there, but even I won’t go so far as to proclaim “I’m never coming back.”

I remain optimistic about the long-term prospects for the “Windy City.” That being said, I do believe conditions in the city will erode before improving again. For those dead set on remaining in town, please do yourself a favor and take a good, hard look at your financial and personal safety capabilities for successfully navigating any “storm” that may lie ahead. For example, how do your finances look with the real prospect of future tax hits down the road?

More later. And to read that entire letter sent to the Chicago Tribune, head on over to their website here.

HeyJackass! On 2016 Chicago Murder Tally: ‘We’ll Most Likely Exceed The 800 Level’

“As the gunfire dies down, HeyJackass will finalize the numbers for 2016, the Department will lie about the other numbers, death investigations will be scheduled for reclassification, Rahm will pretend that 600 black people weren’t murdered in his city by other black people, another 3,600 weren’t maimed and that 25 police shootings are the real problem…”

-New Year’s Day post on Chicago police blog Second City Cop

Happy New Year everyone. Hopefully readers were able to ring in 2017 safely- particularly those in Chicago, where the last weekend of 2016 turned out to be another bloody one.

Just how bad were shootings and murders in the “Windy City” in 2016? Well, consider the following from the CBS News website yesterday:

One of the most violent years in Chicago history ended with a sobering tally: 762 homicides, the most in two decades in the city and more than New York and Los Angeles combined

(Editor’s note: Bold added for emphasis)

That’s pretty awful. And once the final tally is in, 762 murders might be significantly lower than the actual body count.

From the popular HeyJackass! website (“Illustrating Chicago Values”):

Preliminary 2016 Totals
Shot & Killed: 713
Shot & Wounded: 3665
Total Shot: 4378
Total Homicides: 795

And under the section “New Year’s Stupidity” on the site:

While the 800 homicide gorilla awaits entry into 2016’s frunchroom, the fact is we’ll most likely exceed the 800 level soon after the New Year due to late passings and reclassified death investigations. Happy New Year!

(Editor’s note: Bold added for emphasis)

Chicago’s Christmas Weekend: 61 Shot, 11 Killed

The trend sure hasn’t been Chicago’s friend lately as shootings are concerned.

On November 30, I pointed out that shootings increased in the “Windy City” on the long holiday weekends (Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving) when compared to last year.

On December 5, I noted Chicago-area expressway shootings have also grown year-over-year since 2013.

And now there’s this from the Chicago Tribune website yesterday. Megan Crepeau, Peter Nickeas, and Katherine Rosenberg-Douglas reported:

A total of 61 people were shot in the city during the holiday weekend and 11 of them died of their wounds, according to data kept by the Tribune. Seven people were killed on Christmas Day alone, more than on the holiday the past three years combined. Three people were killed in 2015, one in 2014, and two in 2013.

The number of people shot over the holiday weekend also sharply outpaced recent years. During the Christmas weekend in 2015, 29 people were shot and seven of them died. In 2014, when Christmas fell on a Thursday, the four-day weekend included 35 people shot and seven people killed, according to Tribune data…

(Editor’s note: Bold added for emphasis)

Looks like Christmas is now part of this deadly trend.

The HeyJackass! website (“Illustrating Chicago Values”) shows 4,345 shot with 787 killed in the city year-to-date.

Wonder what kind of carnage New Year’s Eve might bring?

Signs Of The Time, Part 115

This “Signs Of The Time” post is actually about signage.

U.S. President-elect Donald Trump’s honorary street signs in downtown Chicago.

The Chicago Tribune reported this afternoon:

After much fanfare from Chicago aldermen over the righteousness of tearing down President-elect Donald Trump’s honorary street signs, city workers quietly removed the placards over the weekend.

A city sign shop crew pulled down the remaining two street signs on Wabash Avenue near Trump Tower at 8 a.m. Sunday, according to Chicago Department of Transportation spokesman Michael Claffey. A third Trump sign was stolen months ago…

(Editor’s note: Bold added for emphasis)

Regular readers of Survival And Prosperity may remember me blogging about this decision by Chicago’s City Council last month. I wrote in a November 11 post entitled “Chicago Could Lose Billions In Federal Funding Under Trump Administration”:

Finally, there’s this little bit of political grandstanding more characteristic of the ruler(s) of some “Banana Republic.” Fran Spielman reported on the Chicago Sun-Times website back on November 1:

Chicago may well have earned Donald Trump’s unflattering ‘war zone’ label after piling up 17 homicides last weekend and 633 already this year.

But don’t tell that to a City Council filled with Democrats.

On Tuesday, the Council followed through on its promise to strip the Republican presidential nominee of an ego tribute he covets: the honorary ‘Trump Plaza’ designation outside the 96-story Trump International Hotel & Tower on the Chicago River that bears his name in huge, white letters

(Editor’s note: Bold added for emphasis)

If rabid opposition and Sanctuary City-status didn’t already motivate U.S. President-elect Donald Trump to steer federal funds to other areas of the country, it’s a pretty good bet this stunt was the icing on the cake.

‘Black Lawmakers From Chicago’ Key To Reducing City’s Gun Violence?

Before the weekend, I blogged about Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson’s recent appearance on WGN-TV (Chicago Channel 9) where he discussed the city’s gun violence. Johnson brought up much-publicized (and delayed) legislation targeting repeat gun offenders, telling viewers:

So with this particular piece of legislation, we’re not changing the sentencing years. What we’re doing is giving our judicial partners the wherewithal to be able to sentence them somewhere between the mid-range to high-end of the sentencing guideline, which will be I think the high-end is maybe 14 years. Mid-range will be about 6 years…

He added:

So we, I’m optimistic that we’ll have it done at the beginning of the year. But in terms of what’s taking so long? I guess they just want to get the language of it right. Because it’s more important to get it right than to rush through it. But we have to do something. Because most of our violence in Chicago is perpetrated by repeat gun offenders

(Editor’s note: Bold added for emphasis)

No doubt “getting the language right” is important. But, there could be another reason why it’s taking so long for this legislation to see the light of day. I was listening to WLS-AM 890 (Chicago) back on September 23 when I caught the following. John Dempsey reported on the radio station’s website that day:

In his speech at Malcolm X college, Emanuel also talked about implementing a three year mentoring program to provide support to over 7,000 at-risk youth in Chicago. The Mayor also called on Illinois lawmakers to toughen penalties for gun crimes, something black lawmakers from Chicago have thwarted in the past, out of concern that harsher gun laws would unfairly target African-Americans.

Eddie Johnson told WLS he is currently talking with those lawmakers about drafting a law that would address the real need the city has to make sure repeat offenders are kept behind bars for longer periods of time. “I think that the legislators are coming around now because before we didn’t have concealed carry and you know the sentencing that I’m looking for is not mandatory. It’s focused at repeat gun offenders so that’s not casting a net over the minority population. It’s more like using a spear to focus on the guys that are consistently telling us they don’t want to play by the rules of society. The way we want it to go is that repeat gun offenders would be sentenced on the mid to high end range of sentencing as opposed to giving them lighter sentences.”

(Editor’s note: Bold added for emphasis)

Meanwhile, almost 78 percent (567 victims) of shooting deaths in Chicago in 2016 have been African-Americans (source: HeyJackass!).

47 Chicago-Area Expressway Shootings Year-To-Date

While I was watching the local news at lunchtime today WGN-TV (Chicago Channel 9) reported that the in-bound Eisenhower Expressway (I-290) was closed due to yet another shooting (people in two vehicles firing at each other- one crashed).

Reporter Sarah Jindra remarked during the live broadcast that she thought this latest incident marked the 46th time in 2016 that a Chicago-area expressway was closed due to gunfire- compared to 38 last year- but that she was also awaiting confirmation from the Illinois State Police on these numbers.

A couple of minutes ago, Jindra reported via Twitter that the Illinois State Police said this was in fact the 47th time Chicagoland expressways have been shut down this year due to shootings, and posted the following numbers for comparison:

Expressway Shootings
2012- 9
2013- 6
2014- 19
2015- 37
2016- 47 (through 12/5)

Once again, the trend is not Chicago’s friend here.

Chicago Police Supt. Eddie Johnson On Tackling Gun Violence

Yesterday morning while watching the local news I spotted Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson on WGN-TV (Chicago Channel 9) talking about the city’s gun violence. From his exchange with WGN’s Robin Baumgarten and Larry Potash:

BAUMGARTEN: So I heard you mention at the Union Club when you spoke earlier this week that it’s basically about 1,000 gang members or offenders that are causing all these problems. Now when people hear that- why don’t you go arrest those guys? Or are they going to jail and getting back out? What’s happening?
JOHNSON: Well, we’ve gotten real good at predicting who these individuals will be. Unfortunately, we have to work within the framework of a little piece of paper called the Constitution. So we actually have to wait until they do something. So that list that we have is not really for enforcement, but it’s just more of an FYI so we know who the perpetrators are.
POTASH: Lawmakers have been working on a bill to kind of stiffen the penalties for gun possession. What is taking so long with that?
JOHNSON: So we, I’m optimistic that we’ll have it done at the beginning of the year. But in terms of what’s taking so long? I guess they just want to get the language of it right. Because it’s more important to get it right than to rush through it. But we have to do something. Because most of our violence in Chicago is perpetrated by repeat gun offenders. And until we change that culture, that mentality, we’re going to see the same things keep cycling through.
BAUMGARTEN: So ideally what would you like to see, or what is the goal? To have someone who has a gun go to jail for how long? What’s the goal?
JOHNSON: So with this particular piece of legislation, we’re not changing the sentencing years. What we’re doing is giving our judicial partners the wherewithal to be able to sentence them somewhere between the mid-range to high-end of the sentencing guideline, which will be I think the high-end is maybe 14 years. Mid-range will be about 6 years.
POTASH: And why wouldn’t they be doing that already?
JOHNSON: Well, I can’t answer that. That’s a question- that’s a million dollar question. But the fact of it is though we do have to do a better job of holding these individuals accountable for their gun crimes…

Chicago: November Murders Double From Last Year

November saw murders in Chicago double from last year. WGN-TV’s Nancy Loo reported this morning:

The latest number only add to an already deadly year. Likely, the worst in two decades. But the numbers for November alone are alarming. According to Chicago Police, there were 77 murders in November- nearly double from last year. And there was a total of 389 shooting victims- that’s 188 more than last November. The murder total for last month is actually more than that of 2014 and 2015 combined. Police say the current violence is fueled by gangs, largely within five police districts on the South and West sides…

(Editor’s note: Bold added for emphasis)

“Murders in Chicago more than doubled in November, police say”
WGN-TV Video

According to the Chicago Police Department’s CLEARMAP (Citizen Law Enforcement Analysis and Reporting) Crime Summary web tool this morning, the 6th (Gresham), 7th (Englewood), 8th (Chicago Lawn), 9th (Deering), 10th (Ogden), and 11th (Harrison) police districts had the most reported incidents of violent crime in the past 90 days.

Chicago Shootings Increase On Long Holiday Weekends Year-Over-Year

Unsurprisingly, an awful lot of people were shot in Chicago over the long Thanksgiving weekend. From the HeyJackass! website (“Illustrating Chicago Values”):

Thanksgiving Stupidity…
Final Stupidity Tally: 11 killed, 64 wounded
2015 Thanksgiving weekend: 9 killed, 22 wounded
2014 Thanksgiving weekend: 5 killed, 23 wounded
2013 Thanksgiving weekend: 4 killed, 12 wounded

(Editor’s note: Three “kills” over the 2016 holiday weekend were police-involved shootings)

Notice the spike in shootings from just a year ago? Looking at the HeyJackass! data, I noticed year-over-year increases also took place on other long holiday weekends in Chicago, including Memorial Day (75 shot in 2016, 32 in 2015), July 4th (67 shot in 2016, 66 in 2015), and Labor Day (66 shot in 2016, 56 in 2015).

The trend is not Chicago’s friend here.
