Resource Of The Week: In The Rabbit Hole Urban Survival Podcast

In yesterday’s post I talked about modern survivalist Jack Spirko and his advice for dealing with this election cycle’s intensifying insanity. I mentioned Spirko is the long-time host of The Survival Podcast, which I named a “Resource Of The Week” all the way back on March 4, 2011. Great stuff, and I still cherry-pick from the latest episodes posted on the TSP website on a regular basis.

There’s one other prepper/survival-related podcast I listen to these days:

In The Rabbit Hole Urban Survival Podcast

From the podcast section of the ITRH website:

After years of being frustrated that no one was fully addressing the concerns of urban survivalists, Aaron [Frankel] and Jonathan [Kanarek] took to the web and founded In The Rabbit Hole in February of 2010. Shortly after they’re long time friend and accomplice Jason joined the show to add a touch of “Red Neck Cajun”. Since then the show has enjoyed many great guests and a wide range of topics.

They are three city boys with a lifetime affinity for the outdoors, but a love of the city, passion for survival topics, and Libertarian Ideals…

“In The Rabbit Hole is about focusing first on the things that matter most: What’s likely to happen. Then preparing for it in a rational and productive way.”

These priorities of urban survival come from the focal points of Community, Health and Intelligence–referred to as “Survival CHI”.

Through a weekly podcast and articles, Aaron, Jonathan, and Jason remind people to “Stay safe and sound”. (Safe in person and sound in mind.)

From the Lone Star State, the trio reach out to people who are interested in taking personal responsibility for their own safety and well-being…

…And who just happen to live in the city.

While not a “long-time listener” to the podcast, I’ve noticed it’s not just urban preppers/survivalists who could learn a thing or two from the material presented. The ITRH site adds:

Hosts Aaron, Jason, and Jonathan cover topics such as:

Self Sufficiency
Food Storage
Homesteading in the city
Survival Book, Video, and Gear Reviews
Starting Off as a New Prepper
Financial Survival
Self Reliance
Preparing for Natural Disasters
Emergency Medicine
Firearms, Guns, and things that go bang
Self Defense
Disaster Psychology

Surveying the latest episodes listed on the ITRH website, episode 191, “Surviving Refugee Hell” (posted October 17)- with James Price, Founder/Director of Humanitarian Aid Security Forces (HASF)- sounds like my next listen.

Interested in tuning-in too? Head on over to the In The Rabbit Hole Urban Survival Podcast website here.

But before you do, there’s also this from the ITRH gang:

Not sure where to begin?

Two of ITRH’s most acclaimed episodes that paint a clear picture of what the Podcast is about are:

TEOTWAWKI Reality Check: What do you really need to be prepping for.

Survival CHI- Reloaded: The foundational principles of ITRH.

Resource Of The Week: Steve’s Pages ‘US Joint Services Manuals’

Back on January 15, 2015, I named “Steve’s Pages” as the “Resource Of The Week.” I blogged:

Wish you had a manual for a particular gun?

Chances are, you can find it on Steve’s Pages.

Stephen Ricciardelli has compiled a ton of FREE firearm manuals in .pdf format on the aptly-named Steve’s Pages website…

Regrettably, Mr. Ricciardelli passed away. However, not only does his site live on, but there’s another section of it that contains an incredible number of U.S. military manuals and other publications which can also be downloaded for free (donations encouraged). Categories include:

• US Air Force Manuals
• US Army Correspondence Courses
• US Army Field Manuals
Note “FM 3-05.70” “17 May 02” “Survival”
• US Army Training Manuals
• US Army Forms
• US Marine Corps Manuals
• US Navy Manuals
• US Joint Services Manuals
• US Federal Highway Administration
• Other Publications
• Canadian Manuals

Like that section containing firearm manuals, another great resource. You can visit the military manuals section of Steve’s Pages here.

Resource Of The Week: SurvivalBlog.com’s Quick-Start Guide For Preparedness Newbies

Even before I started Survival And Prosperity back in November 2010, I’d been dropping by SurvivalBlog.com, “The Daily Web Log for Prepared Individuals Living in Uncertain Times,” on a regular basis. James Wesley, Rawles (“JWR”) is behind that blog, which launched in 2005. The former U.S. Army intelligence officer-turned-survival author, blogger, and retreat consultant has managed to turn the project into the “Internet’s most popular daily blog on survival and preparedness topics.” And his books are pretty good too.

A couple of weeks ago while surfing SurvivalBlog.com I came across a link to a guide for new preppers on the site. From the section entitled “SurvivalBlog’s Quick-Start Guide for Preparedness Newbies”:

I often get e-mails from folks that have just found SurvivalBlog or that have just finished a copy of my novel “Patriots”, that they received as a gift from a relative or a friend. Their response is surprisingly uniform: People feel overwhelmed by the enormity of what it takes to get a family prepared.

First, take a deep breath and relax. Just realizing that you need to get prepared has already put you ahead of 70% of your neighbors, who are sadly little more than clueless sheeple. If you accumulate a one-month food supply then elevates your preparedness into the 80th percentile of preparedness. And by the time you work your way up to a one year supply, you’ll be in the 98th percentile. It’s not very difficult, it’s not very expensive, and it’s not very time-consuming. Just do it one step at a time…

The “Quick-Start Guide” focuses heavily on tackling a “List of Lists,” which includes:

• Water List
• Food Storage List
• Food Preparation List
• First Aid /Minor Surgery List
• Chem/Nuke Defense List
• Biological Warfare Defense List
• Gardening List
• Hygiene/Sanitation List
• Hunting/Fishing/Trapping List
• Power/Lighting/Batteries List
• Fuels List
• Firefighting List
• Tactical Living List
• Security-Firearms List
• Communications/Monitoring List
• Tools List
• Book/Reference List
• Barter and Charity List

It’s impressive for a “quick-start” guide, chock-full of useful preparedness/survival information. If I thought TEOTWAWKI was fast approaching and hadn’t done much to prepare for it, I would likely turn to this resource to rapidly get me going in the right direction.

Check out “SurvivalBlog’s Quick-Start Guide for Preparedness Newbies” for yourself here.

Resource Of The Week: Free Amazon Kindle E-Books Related To Prepping, Survival

I don’t have a big budget to spend on prepping/survival-related reading material. And when it comes to purchasing books, particularly ones that will end up as part of my personal reference library, I prefer the print copy to the electronic version (if available) for fast, reliable access under any circumstance.

That being said, I do purchase e-books. Specifically, Kindle editions from Amazon.com. Now, I don’t own a Kindle, but I do have Amazon’s free Kindle Reading App (available for computers, tablets, and smart phones) installed on my laptop. Which Kindle books do I buy? While I don’t really have time to read the genre anymore, survival fiction not deemed reference material.

The thing I love about Kindle e-books is that they generally cost less than the print editions.

And recently, I’ve learned how to acquire a number of them even cheaper. Specifically, free.

The really cool thing is, this applies not only to prepping- or survival-related Kindle books, but works covering many other subjects.

Instructions

Required: Amazon account and Kindle or free Kindle Reading App installed on computer/tablet/smart phone

1. Go to Amazon.com
2. At the top of the page to the left of the search bar, you will see a drop down menu displaying “All.” Left-click on that and select “Kindle Store” from the list of choices.
3. Enter the keyword “prepping” or “survival” for example as your query in the search bar, at which point Amazon will bring up a list of results. Press the “Enter” key or left-click on magnifying glass to right of search bar.
4. Near the top-right area of the page where it says “Sort by,” you will see a drop down menu displaying “Relevance.” Left-click on that and select “Price: Low to High” from the list of choices.
5. The list of results should now be re-ordered. What you’re looking for are those e-books displaying “$0.00 Kindle Edition” or “$0.00 to buy Kindle Edition.” Note that “$0.00 kindleunlimited” is something completely different. When you left-click on “Buy now with 1-Click” for the titles displaying “$0.00 Kindle Edition” or “$0.00 to buy Kindle Edition,” Amazon finalizes the process of delivering the free e-book to your Kindle or computer/tablet/smart phone with the free Kindle Reading App.
6. Perform this query routinely, as titles are removed and new e-books are added to the list over time.

Back on April 23, I named free digital editions of a number of FMG Publications (American COP, American Handgunner, GUNS Magazine, and Shooting Industry) as the “Resource Of The Week.”

This week’s ROTW nomination is along those same lines. From the website of New York City-based Harris Publications, Inc.:

Resource Of The Week: Hunt Channel Free Live Stream

When I left Chicago for the suburbs, I begrudgingly said goodbye to my beloved satellite television (couldn’t justify the expense considering the limited amount of TV my girlfriend and I were watching). There was some real decent programming I thought I’d be giving up, particularly when it came to certain outdoor and shooting sports-related shows. But as I discovered over time, a number of these programs launched into cyberspace, where viewers could watch full-length episodes for free. Case in point:

American Airgunner
ATSN’s Stop The Threat
Student of the Gun
Trigger Time TV

In addition to episodes, entire channels that had previously been exclusive only to pay TV subscribers could now be watched for no cost. For example, tomorrow night, I look forward to watching “NRA Freedom Friday” on the Pursuit Channel, which “live streams” for free courtesy of VIDillion.TV. Here’s the lineup Friday evening (EST):

8:00 PM Doug Koenig’s Championship Season
8:30 PM American Airgunner
9:00 PM Stop the Threat
9:30 PM Freedom Fighters
10:00 PM 3-Gun Nation
11:00 PM Guns & Gear
11:30 PM Gun Talk

The Pursuit Channel isn’t the only channel that’s now live streamed for free over the Internet. Enter the Hunt Channel, “Prime Time Is Hunt Time.” From what I can see on the website of the Luverne, Alabama-based outdoor, hunting, and fishing TV network, they have 41 shows currently in their lineup:

(Warning: Deceased Animals)

According to the Hunt Channel homepage, they’ve signed several new shows for 2015, including Adventures South of the Border, Chef on the Water, Larysa Unleashed, BlitzTV, Final Purusit TV, The Turkeyologists, Dirty Dirty South Outdoors, Ultimate Predator Hunter, and The Ultimate Pursuit Africa.

Larysa Unleashed? Dirty Dirty South Outdoors? Intriguing titles to say the least.

A schedule of programming is provided on the website. And if you do have satellite TV (DISH Network), the station is channel 266.

For all others, the Hunt Channel’s 24/7 free live stream can be watched via their website here.

And for more information about the TV network, go to their home page here.

Resource Of The Week: Free Digital Editions Of GUNS Magazine, American Handgunner, Shooting Industry, And American COP

Chances are, you’ve visited a pharmacy or grocery store which contained one or more titles from FMG Publications on their magazine rack. San Diego-based FMG publishes:

American Handgunner (6 times/year)
GUNS Magazine (12 times/year)
Shooting Industry (12 times/year)

As well as a number of special editions, including:

American Handgunner Annual
American Handgunner Personal Defense
American Handgunner Survive
American Handgunner Tactical
GUNS Magazine Annual
GUNS Magazine AR-15
GUNS Magazine Combat
GUNS Magazine Surplus

I’ve picked up issues of American Handgunner Survive in the past, and was really impressed with the content.

Now, did you know that FMG Publications uploads FREE digital editions of some magazine titles onto its website? From the FMG site:

FMG Publications are now available at no charge to anyone with access to an Internet connection. The new interactive digital editions of American COP, American Handgunner, GUNS Magazine and Shooting Industry uses the latest dynamic flash, flip-page technology to create a real-time, page-turning, online magazine viewing experience. Embedded links in featured products and advertisements allow visitors easy, single-click access to advertiser web sites.

(Editor’s note: Bold added for emphasis)

I understand American COP is no longer being published. Still, digital editions appear on the website up until July 2014. As I type this, the May/June 2015 digital edition of American Handgunner is out on the FMG site, as is the June digital issue of GUNS Magazine and April’s Shooting Industry.

Head on over to the FMG Publications website here to access each publication’s digital editions.
