Chicagoland’s Jun Wang: Gun Rights, Ownership Advocate Among Chinese-American Community

Yesterday I came across a short documentary on the Al Jazeera website entitled Chicago’s Chinese Gun. The description for the 6 minute 28 second piece is:

Gun advocates come in all shapes and sizes. Jun Wang is one of them.

The AJ “Short” shows how Chicago-area independent software engineer and family man Jun Wang- who arrived in the U.S. from China in the mid-nineties- came to realize how firearms are incredibly-effective tools for personal safety, so much so that he went on to become a “a gun coach, advocating for gun rights and gun ownership among his fellow Chinese Americans.”

Al Jazeera Video

These days, Jun Wang offers firearm training through his Chicago-area Canfire Instructors, and according to Al Jazeera:

In addition to teaching basic laws and safe-handling rules to students who are interested in buying guns, Jun Wang also offers regular safety lectures and small workshops to Chinese living in the Chicago area, free of charge. He believes that the way to change the stereotypical view of Chinese Americans as easy targets in times of violence is to have more of them owning guns.

A very good and engaging documentary by filmmakers Xiao Lyu and Yunfei Zhao.

Survival And Prosperity wishes Jun Wang the very best of success with his advocacy efforts.

Viva Las Vegas… Preppers

Late last night I read an interesting article published earlier in the day on the Las Vegas Sun website that focused on preppers/survivalists out in Southern Nevada. In “Prepping for Doomsday: The survivalism movement’s fine line between protection and paranoia,” Rob Miech drew from interviews with Mike Monko and Anthony Champion of Zombie Apocalypse Store, an anonymous employee of Lock N Load Tactical, “Max” at Mad Man Army Surplus, and his neighbor Bailey (“a former military sharpshooter”) to pen the following:

The king of all earthquakes topples the high-rises of Las Vegas Boulevard. A 2-billion-volt electromagnetic pulse (EMP) strike has zapped computers and cell towers. Some other black swan event has pulverized the city’s power grid. In any such cataclysm, a woman implored to Mike Monko, fallout shelters below certain Strip hotels would protect their rank and file.

They would be taken care of, she continued, in a subterranean world of 40,000-square-foot domiciles with massive food supplies fit for 20,000 people. In his Zombie Apocalypse Store, Monko struggled to keep his eyes from rolling. “She was arguing with me,” he said. “She insisted that they exist. I said, ‘God bless you, ma’am. Would you like some more water?’ Here, you hear it all, like, the Sunrise Mountains are hollow and people are living under them.”

They are survivalists, preppers or doomsday preppers, or any of various mutations. Some staunchly pigeonhole themselves; others dismiss definitions. Those who drive only older vehicles- whose pre-solid-state-electronics engines are immune to an EMP strike- belong in a distinct category of preparedness.

Such tales come with Monko’s territory, where fact, fiction and fear straddle fine lines between protection and paranoia. Hollywood inspired the business, which opened in 2011; sales have cooled over the past year. It’s a starting block to gauge what it means to be a survivalist today in Southern Nevada, amid such uncertainty about tomorrow

(Editor’s note: Bold added for emphasis)

There seemed to be that “preppers/survivalists are kooks” theme permeating the article. But to be fair, Miech is arguing there’s a “fine line between protection and paranoia,” so the use of “fringe” examples is to be expected. That being said, some notable passages from the piece included:

-A glimpse at how many preppers/survivalists there might be out in Las Vegas
-How the prepping/survival industry is doing these days in Southern Nevada
-“Liberal Preppers” on the Vegas scene
-And these bits:

As a group, according to Monko, they do not play well together. They lack communication skills, and when they do gather, their egos always clash. “It’s turmoil,” Monko said. They become even more solitary…

The owner of Lock N Load, which sells weapons and ammunition in the Henderson foothills, declined an interview request. One of her employees, who requested anonymity, recounted how an older woman, nearly teary-eyed and trembling, had recently approached him to buy her first handgun. Her post-Trump trauma was stark; the employee told me he talked her off the ledge. He convinced her not to buy something so dangerous in such a state…

Wow. You can read the article in its entirety over on the Las Vegas Sun website here.

Illinois State Representative Rita Mayfield (D) Proposes 3.75 Percent Surcharge On Firearms And Firearm Parts

Illinois Democrats continue to push anti-gun legislation in Springfield, the latest being Illinois House Bill 1810 from State Representative Rita Mayfield (D-Waukegan). From Brandon Merano over on the WSIL-TV (Southern Illinois ABC affiliate) website Friday:

A new bill headed to the Illinois House floor could increase what we pay for guns.

The bill would put a three-and-three-quarters percent charge on firearms and firearm parts, with revenue going to at-risk youth.

Language in HB 1810, introduced by State Representative Rita Mayfield defines “At risk Youth” as kids ages 16 – 22 who live in a “high crime area where the homicide rate is more than 4 times higher than the average rate of a community the same size.”

That suggests most of the funding would flow north to Chicago…

(Editor’s note: Bold added for emphasis)

A week ago, the National Rifle Association’s Institute for Legislative Action reported on legislation introduced in the Illinois Senate by State Senator Toi Hutchinson (D-Chicago Heights)- Amendment 2 to Senate Bill 9- warning:

Under SA 2, a 5% tax would be imposed on any membership or access fee for gun clubs, shooting ranges, hunt clubs, training classes and match fees. Not only is this an abhorrent tax on your Second Amendment rights, it also requires that any of those places/people to register with the state and pay an annual fee of $75 just so that they can offer their service or membership with the 5% tax added

Off The X Training Concepts Announces 2017 Preparedness, Self-Protection Classes In Glenview, Illinois

Any Chicagoland readers familiar with Off The X Training Concepts in Glenview, Illinois? I’ve mentioned the north suburban preparedness/personal safety training outfit before on Survival And Prosperity, but never really dedicated a full post to them. From their Facebook page:

Off the X Training Concepts was created to offer an extensive selection of training opportunities in the areas of preparedness and self-protection. It was founded on the belief that every individual should have access to information and training, better preparing them to take ownership of their personal safety and the safety of loved ones. Unlike many training schools and programs, OTX does not promote or teach a specific school of thought or discipline, but instead acts as a hub for a variety of training platforms and instruction. This allows the individual access to a variety of philosophies, which enables them the ability to find what works best for them…

The reason I bring up OTX, as they’re also known by, is that I spotted the following post this morning on their Facebook page regarding upcoming training opportunities:

WE ARE BACK!! OTX is pleased to announce several upcoming training offerings for 2017!!

In March and October we will be hosting Craig Douglas / Shivworks for their EWO and ECQC classes.

Also in March we will begin offering monthly boxing/conditioning groups instructed by Fernando (Beast) Rivera.

Beginning in April, OTX will be hosting an Illinois concealed carry class every other month.

In June we are super excited to be hosting a combined two day training to be taught by Cecil Burch of Immediate Action Combatives, Larry Lindenman of Point Driven Training and Paul Sharp of Sharp Defense. The course is entitled Dominating the entangled fight.

In July we have several course offerings to include a two day medical class being taught by Caleb Causey from Lone Star Medics, a firearms skill building class and a firearms home defense class.

And this is just the beginning. We look forward to introducing several new weekly and monthly training offerings. Specific event postings will follow in the days to come!!!!

(Editor’s note: Bold added for more information)

Sounds terrific. For more information about Off The X Training Concepts and these opportunities, head on over to their website here and Facebook page here (much more info on their Facebook page).

Illinois State Senator Toi Hutchinson (D) Proposes Wide-Ranging Anti-Gun Tax

Now that the November elections are over, it was only a matter of time before the next assault was launched against the Second Amendment in Illinois.

The National Rifle Association’s Institute for Legislative Action published the following on their website Monday:

Illinois: Anti-Gun Tax Proposed on Exercising Second Amendment Rights

Last week, the Illinois Senate received Senate Amendment 2 to Senate Bill 9 from state Senator Toi Hutchinson. In an attempt to address the ongoing budget problem in Illinois, Sen. Hutchinson decided to tax Illinois residents’ Second Amendment rights, and by extension, their right to safety.

Under SA 2, a 5% tax would be imposed on any membership or access fee for gun clubs, shooting ranges, hunt clubs, training classes and match fees. Not only is this an abhorrent tax on your Second Amendment rights, it also requires that any of those places/people to register with the state and pay an annual fee of $75 just so that they can offer their service or membership with the 5% tax added.

By increasing the price of self-defense classes as well as any fee spent on range time and practice, this amendment is making it more expensive for Illinoisans to seek training to be able to defend themselves. SA 2 to Senate Bill 9 effectively sees Illinois residents’ right to safety as an opportunity to ease the budget burden on the entirety of the state. Further, any “repair, servicing, alteration, fitting, cleaning, painting, coating, towing, inspection, or maintenance of tangible personal property” is also taxable under SA 2. This section would include all gunsmithing and gun refinishing under taxable services.

It is extremely important that NRA members and Second Amendment supporters contact their state Senator and strongly urge them to oppose Senate Amendment 2 to Senate Bill 9. The Second Amendment rights and right to safety of Illinoisans is not something that the legislature should tax

(Editor’s note: Bold added for emphasis)

The NRA-ILA offers opponents of Senate Amendment 2 to Senate Bill 9 a way to take action via their website here.

And The Most Violent Police Beat In Chicago Last Year Was…

Happy Monday everybody. For the first time in a looong time, the sun is actually out over this part of Chicagoland this morning.

I just got finished reading an insightful article on the Chicago Sun-Times website entitled “THE WATCHDOGS: The most violent police beat in Chicago.”

According to the newspaper, in 2016 that distinction went to Beat 1133 of the Chicago Police Department’s 11th District on the city’s West Side. Sam Charles reported Friday night:

Nowhere did the violence hit home the way it did in the Chicago Police Department’s Beat No. 1133, where Hosey, whose death remains unsolved, was killed.

Sixteen murders. Forty-five nonfatal shootings that left 55 people wounded. Three cops shot and wounded. And three people killed by the police.

That added up to more instances of gun violence in Beat 1133 in 2016 than in any other of the 303 beats the police department divides the city into, a Chicago Sun-Times analysis of police data has found.

The runners-up: Beat 1533 in Austin, with 12 murders and 44 nonfatal shootings; and Beat 1522, west of there and also in Austin, with 11 murders and 43 nonfatal shootings.

The area encompasses about one-half-square mile. It’s bounded by Jackson Boulevard, Roosevelt Road, Homan Avenue and Springfield Avenue…

(Editor’s note: Bold added for emphasis)

Regular observers of Chicago crime and those familiar with that part of the city probably aren’t too surprised at the Sun-Times’ findings.

According to the Chicago Police Department’s CLEARMAP (Citizen Law Enforcement Analysis and Reporting) Crime Summary web tool this morning, the 6th (Gresham), 7th (Englewood), 10th (Ogden), and 11th (Harrison) police districts had the most reported incidents of violent crime over the past 365 days.

The 11th District topped them all (2,407 incidents).

Head on over to the Chicago Sun-Times site here to read the entire piece.

Illinois State Rifle Association: ‘Good Riddance’ Barack Obama

A January 20 press release from the Illinois State Rifle Association (“dedicated to education, safety training and support of Illinois firearm owners”) is making the rounds on the Internet. Executive Director Richard Pearson penned:

ISRA: Goodbye Barack… Hello Donald

“About eight years ago, I penned a letter to gun owners nationwide about my experiences lobbying Barack Obama when he was an Illinois State Senator. Among the adjectives, I used to describe Senator Obama were arrogant, rude, self-righteous, indignant and aloof. I warned gun owners that an Obama presidency would cast the darkest of days upon supporters of our Second Amendment. I advised gun owners that the only hope for preserving gun rights would be a sustained pushback against Obama’s attempts to obliterate civilian firearm ownership.

There was never any doubt in my mind that Obama would seek to crush the Second Amendment. Obama entered office with the very firm intention of satisfying the globalist ideal of knocking America down a couple of pegs. Thus, in no time at all, President Obama attacked two great American icons – General Motors and our superlative health care system. Next on his plate was an assault on the uniquely American sense of rugged individualism. As we all know, self-reliance is predicated upon the existence of the Second Amendment. Plain and simple – without a Second Amendment, individualism is just a fantasy. Yes, early in his tenure, Barack Obama was achieving his objective of making America more like the rest of the world rather than encouraging the rest of the world to be more like us.

When Obama charged headlong into the gun control fray, he was met with stubborn and determined opposition from everyday gun owners. We fought him in Congress. We fought him in the federal courts. We fought him in the court of public opinion. In the end, the good guys won and the promise of a nation-wide version of Chicago-style gun control faded into irrelevance. For that, gun owners owe themselves a hearty pat on the back.

Now enters Donald Trump- President Donald Trump. Trump has made a lot of promises to gun owners and I hope he keeps them. Copious promises notwithstanding, the nation’s gun owners must remain mobilized and prepared to fight the gun control movement whether the battle is at the national, state, or local level. The fight for gun rights is not over and will never be over.

In closing, I’d like to bid Barack Obama “good riddance,” and wish President Trump well in the monumental job he is about to undertake.”

The ISRA is the state’s leading advocate of safe, lawful and responsible firearms ownership. For more than a century, the ISRA has represented the interests of millions of law-abiding Illinois firearm owners.
