And The Most Violent Police Beat In Chicago Last Year Was…

Happy Monday everybody. For the first time in a looong time, the sun is actually out over this part of Chicagoland this morning.

I just got finished reading an insightful article on the Chicago Sun-Times website entitled “THE WATCHDOGS: The most violent police beat in Chicago.”

According to the newspaper, in 2016 that distinction went to Beat 1133 of the Chicago Police Department’s 11th District on the city’s West Side. Sam Charles reported Friday night:

Nowhere did the violence hit home the way it did in the Chicago Police Department’s Beat No. 1133, where Hosey, whose death remains unsolved, was killed.

Sixteen murders. Forty-five nonfatal shootings that left 55 people wounded. Three cops shot and wounded. And three people killed by the police.

That added up to more instances of gun violence in Beat 1133 in 2016 than in any other of the 303 beats the police department divides the city into, a Chicago Sun-Times analysis of police data has found.

The runners-up: Beat 1533 in Austin, with 12 murders and 44 nonfatal shootings; and Beat 1522, west of there and also in Austin, with 11 murders and 43 nonfatal shootings.

The area encompasses about one-half-square mile. It’s bounded by Jackson Boulevard, Roosevelt Road, Homan Avenue and Springfield Avenue…

(Editor’s note: Bold added for emphasis)

Regular observers of Chicago crime and those familiar with that part of the city probably aren’t too surprised at the Sun-Times’ findings.

According to the Chicago Police Department’s CLEARMAP (Citizen Law Enforcement Analysis and Reporting) Crime Summary web tool this morning, the 6th (Gresham), 7th (Englewood), 10th (Ogden), and 11th (Harrison) police districts had the most reported incidents of violent crime over the past 365 days.

The 11th District topped them all (2,407 incidents).

Head on over to the Chicago Sun-Times site here to read the entire piece.

Welfare Recipient: ‘Can You Really Blame Us? I Mean, I Get To Sit Home, I Get To Go Visit My Friends All Day, I Even Get To Smoke Weed’

“The point is these programs are not typically hammocks for people to just lie back and relax. These programs are almost always temporary means for hardworking people to stay afloat while they try to find a new job or go into school to retrain themselves for the jobs that are out there, or sometimes just to cope with a bout of bad luck. Progressives should be open to reforms that actually strengthen these programs and make them more responsive to a 21st century economy.”

-U.S. President Barack Obama, remarking on economic mobility, December 4, 2013

And then there’s “Lucy,” calling in to KLBJ radio station in Austin, Texas, in October. This alleged welfare recipient told listeners:

I just wanted to say while workers out there- people like you that are preaching morality at people like me who are living on welfare- can you really blame us? I mean, I get to sit home, I get to go visit my friends all day, I even get to smoke weed. Me, and people that I know that are illegal immigrants that don’t contribute to society- we still gonna get paid. Our checks are going to come in the mail every month, and it’s going to be on time. And we get subsidized housing. We even get presents delivered to our kids for Christmas. Why should I work?

Personally, I think there may be a lot more “Lucy’s” out there than President Obama’s remarks would have you believe.

Signs Of The Time, Part 62

The Chicago Police Department is implementing a new anti-violence program this Friday:

Sending warning letters to around 20 people or so in the Austin District on Chicago’s West Side that statisticians have determined are most likely to become shooters or crime victims.

If this works, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy, and others associated with the experiment will be hailed as innovators in the continued fight against crime.

If it doesn’t? Well, business as usual, and at least some residents got free toilet paper from the City.
