Questionable Ipsos/Reuters Poll About Gun Rights And Regulations

Questions abound concerning an Ipsos poll on gun rights and regulations that was recently conducted for Thomson Reuters. From the Ipsos press release this morning:

Washington, DC – These are findings from an Ipsos poll conducted for Thomson Reuters from April 9th-12th, 2012 about gun rules and regulations.

• The NRA is a reasonably popular organization. Unsurprisingly, favorability towards the NRA is stronger among Republicans but a majority of Democrats have a favorable attitude towards the organization.
• As comparison points, we also asked about the NAACP, ACLU and AARP. AARP has the strongest favorability rates of the four organizations. Favorability towards the ACLU and NAACP are both strongly influenced by partisan ID.
• Americans are broadly supportive of restrictions or regulations on gun ownership.
• Only 6% say there should be no or very few restrictions on gun ownership.
• 62% oppose allowing people to bring a firearm into a church, workplace or retail establishment.
• 91% support background checks for gun purchasers.
• 69% support limiting the number of guns a person could purchase in a given time frame.
• 74% support laws limiting the sale of automatic weapons.
• However, Americans are also broadly supportive of a number of pro-gun laws including:
• Majorities support concealed carry laws and allowing the use of deadly force, both in homes and public places.
• Framing this discussion, Americans remain concerned with crime and are concerned about what is to be done about it.
• Almost half of Americans think crime rates are going up in their communities.
• Significant majorities do not think police can stop all crime from happening
• As a consequence, large majorities believe regular people need to step up to prevent crimes (leading to the Trayvon Martin incident).

I’m surprised the poll asked about automatic weapons (i.e. machine guns, according to actual survey question) as opposed to semi-automatic firearms. Machine guns are already highly restricted for law-abiding citizens. I wrote back on June 6, 2011:

According to the well-known firearms resource website GunCite.com, which focuses on a “comprehensive presentation of gun control and Second Amendment issues; analysis of firearms statistics, research, and gun control policies”:

It has been unlawful since 1934 (The National Firearms Act) for civilians to own machine guns without special permission from the U.S. Treasury Department . Machine guns are subject to a $200 tax every time their ownership changes from one federally registered owner to another, and each new weapon is subject to a manufacturing tax when it is made, and it must be registered with the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms and Explosives (ATF) in its National Firearms Registry.

To become a registered owner, a complete FBI background investigation is conducted, checking for any criminal history or tendencies toward violence, and an application must be submitted to the ATF including two sets of fingerprints, a recent photo, a sworn affidavit that transfer of the NFA firearm is of “reasonable necessity,” and that sale to and possession of the weapon by the applicant “would be consistent with public safety.” The application form also requires the signature of a chief law enforcement officer with jurisdiction in the applicant’s residence.

Since the Firearms Owners’ Protection Act of May 19, 1986, ownership of newly manufactured machine guns has been prohibited to civilians. Machine guns which were manufactured prior to the Act’s passage are regulated under the National Firearms Act, but those manufactured after the ban cannot ordinarily be sold to or owned by civilians.

(Editor’s note: Italics added for emphasis)

GunCite also adds:

Twenty-five states have no further restrictions on civilian ownership of machine guns (some require registration with the state) than what is required by federal law. Other states have either placed further restrictions or outlawed operable machine guns to civilians entirely.

As existing laws mean automatic firearms are already highly-regulated for law-abiding citizens, and it’s semi-automatic guns (one trigger pull, one shot only) that are presently under attack by gun “control” supporters, in a poll about gun rights/regulation one would reasonably expect a question about limiting firearm sales to be about semi-automatics rather than machine guns.

In addition, note the following excerpt from the press release:

As a consequence, large majorities believe regular people need to step up to prevent crimes (leading to the Trayvon Martin incident)

(Editor’s note: Italics added for emphasis)

Now, the original poll question:

Regular people need to step up to help prevent crime from happening

So where did “(leading to the Trayvon Martin incident)” come from?

Scratching my head about this poll.

You can read the entire press release and access the survey data on the Ipsos website here.

Signs Of The Time, Part 39

Speaking of the shooting range today, has anyone been to Las Vegas lately to partake in some “gun tourism?” I’ve been hearing more about this activity lately. Rob Lovitt wrote on MSNBC.com on February 27:

Blam-blam-blam! Pa-pow-pow! Ber-t-t-t-t-t-t, ber-t-t-t-t-t-t!

If that sounds like a good time, you may want to set your sights on Las Vegas’ newest attraction, Machine Guns Vegas (MGV), which opened its doors Monday. Part gun range, part ultra-lounge, MGV invites visitors to grab the automatic weapon of their choice — Uzis, AK-47s and more — and get in touch with their inner gangster or SEAL Team Six commando.

“Luxury shooting range mixes bullets with nightclub mood.”
FOX News Video

Less than 10 minutes from the Vegas Strip, MGV consists of 10,000 square feet of newly-built floor space and provides shoot hosts called “Gun Girls,” who also happen to be NRA-certified instructors, according to Lovitt.

The MSNBC website contributor noted that the arrival of Machine Guns Vegas competes with gun tourism pioneer The Gun Store, a Las Vegas “institution” for more than 20 years. A visit to the store was recently named one of the things to do in a recent CNNGo website piece from February 21. From the article “10 classic American experiences:”

10. Las Vegas

Every American needs at least one regrettable weekend in this neon mecca to the seven deadly sins, located in the Mojave Desert, one of America’s most unwelcoming environments, made slightly more inhabitable by power and water management from the Hoover Dam.

Sleep at the hotel pool all day, check out Cirque du Soleil, gamble away your rent money, visit the Liberace Museum, catch a boxing match, go to the Gun Store on Tropicana Avenue and shoot every gun you’ve ever seen in a mobster movie, wander the Strip and try to leave without a wedding certificate.

(Editor’s note: Italics added for emphasis)

Next time I’m in Vegas and I need to take a break from a marathon session betting the ponies at the Race and Sports Book at the Imperial Palace Hotel, I might have to saunter over to Machine Guns Vegas and The Gun Store to let some steam off.

Al-Qaeda Inspiring Gun Control Supporters To Disarm Americans?

Something tells me certain anti-gun individuals/groups will be using the incorrect statements made within this video as “justification” for more gun control.

-Except from my June 6 post about a recently-released Al-Qaeda video in which U.S.-born interpreter/spokesman Adam Gadahn, aka “Azzam the American,” called on Muslims living in the West to use the “tools” available to them- “easily-obtainable firearms”- to wage war against the “enemies of Islam.”

Sure enough, citing this video and the threat of terrorism, the Violence Policy Center, Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, Coalition to Stop Gun Violence, Legal Community Against Violence, and States United to Prevent Gun Violence, along with fourteen state and regional “gun violence prevention” organizations, sent President Obama a letter dated June 7, 2011, asking for more gun control measures to be implemented.

-Excerpt from my June 8 post

And now, there’s this from Devlin Barrett in the Metropolis blog on the Wall Street Journal website yesterday:

A gun control group founded and funded by Mayor Michael Bloomberg is launching a new television ad this week using al Qaeda propaganda to urge the closing of the so-called gun show loophole.

The Coalition of Mayors Against Illegal Guns, whose membership includes about 600 mayors, said the ad will run on cable news channels.

The commercial features al Qaeda video of American-born spokesman Adam Gadahn…

What Are You Waiting For? from Fix Gun Checks on Vimeo.
Mayors Against Illegal Guns TV Ad

Yep, it’s that same video they’re using. The one in which “Azzam” erroneously states:

You can down to a gun show at the local convention center, and come away with a fully-automatic assault rifle without a background check, and most likely, without having to show an identification card.

But as I pointed out in that June 6 post:

Knowledgeable firearm enthusiasts will tell you that “Azzam” is incorrect, as fully-automatic assault rifles, or “machine guns,” are extremely difficult to legally obtain in the United States.

Treasury Department.

Disappointingly, the Coalition of Mayors Against Illegal Guns ended up incorporating Gadahn’s untrue statements about fully-automatic firearms into their TV ad to scare John and Suzi Q. Public into contacting their congressperson to push for more gun control.

Yeah, Main Street really appreciates being deceived at a time when confidence in their elected leaders continues to erode.

But, before I get off-topic, since it’s not too difficult for just about anyone to obtain that information about machine guns, the following just begs to be asked:

Is Gadahn and the Al-Qaeda propaganda machine completely inept… or are they more devious than most probably give them credit for?

Consider this. If I’m a Muslim living in America who is suddenly inspired by this video, and proceed to stop by the local gun show asking about fully-automatic weapons, think that won’t send up a big red flag? It seems outrageous that Al-Qaeda would disseminate such erroneous information to sympathizers in the United States. The terrorist organization might as well be booking them reservations for an extended stay at Guantanamo.

However… what if Al-Qaeda’s propaganda arm meant to include those incorrect statements about machine guns in the video, anticipating (correctly) that supporters of gun control in the United States would use it to push for more controls on firearms?

Perhaps Gadahn clued them in that it would only be a matter time before some group, like the Coalition of Mayors Against Illegal Guns, used Al-Qaeda’s video and its untrue statements as part of some scare campaign to impose more gun control in the United States.

Which ultimately benefits Al-Qaeda should an “American Mumbai” or some other operation targeting the United States mainland happen to be in the works.

The less armed citizens around that could thwart an operation, the better, in the terrorists’ minds.

And wouldn’t it be something if Al-Qaeda went so far as to start contributing funds to gun control efforts in an attempt to push disarmament along faster?

Devious, indeed.

As devious as the Coalition of Mayors Against Illegal Guns using terrorist propaganda containing falsehoods to push their agenda.

But that’s politicians for you.

[Editor’s note: It has come to my attention that at 23 seconds into the TV ad the following appears at the bottom of the screen in small print- “Terror suspects can buy semi-automatic assault rifles from private sellers with no background check.” Some people are claiming that the presence of this “disclaimer” means the Coalition of Mayors Against Illegal Guns have alerted the audience about the incorrect nature of Gadahn’s statement concerning fully-automatic guns. However, if the group was so concerned about potentially deceiving the public with this erroneous claim, why didn’t they just edit this statement out, like they did with other portions of the original Al-Qaeda video?]

Gun Control Groups, Citing Recent Al-Qaeda Video, Push Agenda To Prevent ‘Large-Scale Terror Attack With Firearms’

On Monday, I discussed Al-Qaeda’s recently-released video in which their U.S.-born interpreter/spokesman Adam Gadahn, aka “Azzam the American,” called on Muslims living in the West to use the “tools” available to them to wage war against the “enemies of Islam.” For those located in the United States, he advised:

America is absolutely awash with easily-obtainable firearms. You can down to a gun show at the local convention center, and come away with a fully-automatic assault rifle without a background check, and most likely, without having to show an identification card. So what are you waiting for?

I went on to debunk Gadahn’s statement about fully-automatic firearms, and added:

Despite such an erroneous claim, something tells me certain anti-gun individuals/groups will be using the incorrect statements made within this video as “justification” for more gun control.

Here’s an excerpt from that correspondence:

Respectfully, Mr. President, the time is now to act to prevent a large-scale terror attack with firearms. The United States’ weak gun laws are well known throughout the terrorist community and today act as a beacon for lone wolves and small groups of terrorists with few resources seeking to inflict maximum damage. American gun stores and gun shows are stocked with the most lethal firearms available anywhere in the industrialized world. Terrorists can easily obtain the same 50 caliber anti-armor sniper rifles that our troops deploy in Afghanistan. Military assault weapons and high-capacity pistols can be obtained inexpensively and in bulk. Even armor-piercing and incendiary ammunition is freely available. It takes no imagination to conjure the outcome of an attack by a few well-armed individuals on a shopping mall, a sporting event, or just a busy city street.

Therefore, we call on you in the strongest terms to order an immediate and thorough review of steps the Administration can take in the short term to reduce the firepower available on the civilian gun market, to tighten existing laws regulating the gun industry, and to improve the background check system to make it harder for those with terrorist ties to obtain firearms.

We also urge you to call on Congress to convene extensive, serious hearings to explore and identify the legislative steps that ultimately must be taken if a small arms terrorist attack is to be prevented. We would welcome the opportunity to discuss specific policy options with you directly.

(Editor’s note: Italics added for emphasis)

Analyzing the letter, there’s two areas that really stood out for me. First, there’s the part that says:

Military assault weapons… can be obtained inexpensively and in bulk.

First, an “assault weapon” can be a firearm- as well as knife, a steel pipe, a rubber dildo (a la Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels), Homey the Clown’s stuffed sock, get the point? Okay, since an “assault weapon” can be pretty much anything, perhaps they meant an “assault rifle,” which the popular firearms resource GunFacts describes as “a machine gun or ‘select fire’ rifle that fires rifle cartridges,” with “select fire” meaning the capability for both automatic and semi-automatic (one trigger pull, one shot) fire. That being the the case, “assault rifles” cannot be obtained easily (automatic capability being the key here), let alone “inexpensively and in bulk,” by the general public due to the tremendous amount of regulation in place for acquiring and owning these firearms (refer to Monday’s post if you need to know more).

Okay, so when these groups talked about “military assault weapons” perhaps they were referring to semi-automatic variants of assault rifles used by the world’s militaries. Gun dealers advertise them as being M-16s, AK-47s, FN FALs, etcetera. However, while they are cosmetically similar to the military assault rifles they’re patterned after, functionally, they are identical to hunting rifles. Firearm enthusiasts know this (and probably wish their M-16s were fully-automatic), but most Americans don’t. Which works to the advantage of gun control organizations. For example, a related piece by Sam Stein yesterday on the Huffington Post website included the following statement:

“A terror suspect can’t take a regular sized tube of Crest into the airport, much less board a plane, but they can buy an AK-47 with no questions asked,” said Mark Glaze, Director of the group Mayors Against Illegal Guns.

They can buy an AK-47 with no questions asked? Not happening, at least legally. They might be able to acquire a cosmetically similar, semi-automatic (again, one trigger pull, one shot) variant of the selective fire AK-47 assault rifle, but not the real McCoy. In fact, buying a real AK-47 will lead to a lot of questions being asked.

Second, there’s the part that says:

We also urge you to call on Congress to convene extensive, serious hearings to explore and identify the legislative steps that ultimately must be taken if a small arms terrorist attack is to be prevented.

The reason these groups urge President Obama to “call on Congress” is that the White House cannot pursue gun control initiatives on its own. From that Huffington Post piece yesterday:

But closing the gun show loophole is not a possible executive action. To change the current gun show system to require background checks from private sellers would take an act from the legislative branch. Obama could instruct the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to ramp up undercover investigations of sales at gun shows, something that advocates have encouraged him to do.

(Editor’s note: Italics added for emphasis)

Gun control groups are demanding action from sympathizers in Congress and Barack Obama. Question is, will President Obama deliver, and jeopardize his re-election next year in doing so?

You can read the entire letter to President Obama from the gun control organizations here (.pdf file).

The Next Mumbai-Style Terrorist Attack

A nearly 8-month long travel warning for Americans in Europe will expire on Saturday and not be renewed, the Associated Press reports.

In October, the State Department advised Americans to be wary of a Mumbai-style attack on a European city.

The threat expires–who knows what that means–on Saturday, one day after the Royal Wedding will draw millions to London.

-Aol Travel, April 28, 2011

“Who knows what that means.” Perhaps that means if a terrorist attack similar to what took place in Mumbai, India, on November 26, 2008, were to occur in a European city, it would most likely take place by tomorrow.

Think the U.S. Department of State and our intelligence agencies might be anticipating a “Royal Surprise” for Friday?

It wouldn’t be too much of a stretch to expect a Mumbai-style terrorist attack on London tomorrow. After all, the United Kingdom is an American partner in the “war on terror,” the eyes of the world will be trained on the English capital, the bad guys/girls would have had plenty of time to plan for an attack, and that part of Europe has more than its share of Muslim extremists who might be willing to participate in a terrorist strike. From ABC News’ Megan Chuchmach on April 25:

As the Royal Wedding nears and the eyes of the world turn to London this week, a radical Muslim cleric in Britain who plans to protest outside the ceremony tells ABC News the celebrations are a “prime target” for Al Qaeda franchises and wannabe jihadis alike.

Top Al Qaeda operatives Ayman al-Zawahiri and Anwar al-Awlaki are “actively encouraging people to carry out [do-it-yourself] operations]” similar to the attempted attack by alleged ‘Underwear Bomber’ Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab on a Christmas Day flight from Amsterdam to Detroit in 2009, says Anjem Choudary in an interview on the current episode of “Brian Ross Investigates.”

“There’s nothing really which is outside of the realm of a possible attack, from biological to nuclear to very high profile events like 9/11,” said Choudary, whose extremist Islam4UK organization was recently banned by the British government under counter-terrorism laws. “So I think it’s a case of all-out war.”

He said there is a “very real possibility” that attackers “will come into [Britain] via the sea or via ports where they can slip under the security.”

While the British have that very-plausible threat to contend with, should we as Americans be concerned with a Mumbai-style terrorist attack happening on our shores? Definitely, according to chatter picked up by Massad Ayoob, a captain with the Grantham (New Hampshire) Police Department and an internationally-known firearms and self-defense instructor. He wrote yesterday in his blog Massad Ayoob on Guns on the Backwoods Home Magazine website that:

The general consensus of police, military, and national intelligence is that it’s only a matter of time before this nation experiences an incident reminiscent of Beslan or Mumbai: armed, trained, committed terrorists massacring the innocent with automatic weapons and explosive.

(Editor’s note: Italics added for emphasis)

The head of the Massad Ayoob Group (MAG) also talked about the Mumbai attack last summer. He wrote in his blog on June 13, 2010:

There have been indications that America’s enemies intend multiple terrorist attacks in this country, patterned after the 11/26-29/07 incident in Mumbai, India that left 168 civilians and authorities dead, and 308 wounded. It was perpetrated by ten members of Pakistan’s Lashkar-e-Taiba group, armed with explosives and automatic rifles. Only one of the terrorists survived.

Note that some of the responding police in India were unarmed, and some others were equipped with hastily-issued WWI technology Lee-Enfield bolt action rifles, and cartridges issued by the handful. They were poorly trained by American standards. By contrast, American police have gone heavily to coordinated “active shooter response” training since the Columbine tragedy more than a decade ago, and AR15-type patrol rifles are widely distributed. US law enforcement can be expected to respond much more swiftly and effectively to a Mumbai-style incident.

In India, the citizens were effectively unarmed and helpless against the ten terrorists who slaughtered them at will. Armed Americans are likely to respond differently, particularly in the Southwest where there are indications that such potential terrorists have already crossed the border, and may “stage” near it. In Southern Arizona recently, it became apparent to me that more ranchers and even townsfolk are now storing rifles in their cars, and carrying handguns routinely. They can be expected to shoot back, an assessment that comes not from this writer’s guesswork, but from history…

An American Mumbai? Yes, it could happen, and seems more likely than ever based on recent intelligence projections. If it does occur, look for a MUCH faster and more decisive response by American police than those of India…and if it happens near the Arizona or Texas border, look for bullets from armed citizens’ hunting and defense rifles in the bodies of at least some of the dead terrorists.

If an American Mumbai occurs, I’m guessing it will go down in a high-profile, internationally-known city whose residents/workers are likely to be unarmed and incapable of defending themselves against rampaging terrorists with automatic weapons- like my hometown of Chicago.

Still, it doesn’t hurt for Americans outside of the “Windy City” to prepare for such an event. Consider what Gabe Suarez, a decorated veteran of Southern California law enforcement and president of the personal safety training outfit Suarez International, wrote in his blog Warrior Talk News on May 6, 2010:

Put yourself in the enemy’s shoes….err, sandals…..which option would YOU pick? Which offers the easiest implementation, least chance for detection, greatest chance for success – bombs or bullets?

The mass shooting and not the improvised and unsuccessful bomb is the “easy button”, and that fact cannot be ignored by us as it will not be overlooked by the enemy.

So what do we do?

1). We must identify who the enemy is. Please go back and peruse the list of events above, both failed and successful. What is the common thread connecting the attackers?

2). Carry your gun everywhere…..a REAL fighting gun….not some sissy “suitable for CCW” 5 shot “self defense gun”. The times are not such that concern over a mugger is the issue anymore. Carry extra ammo with you. It is not difficult at all to carry a full sized pistol with a couple of extra magazines. I have done so since 1983.

These are not the times to be seeking political correctness over public safety. It is not the time to fear false labels created and assigned by the mass media. The Israelis learned that lesson long ago. After all is said and done, it is better to be a live “intolerant racist” (as the MSM would call us) than a dead “co-existing”, tolerant “paragon of political correctness”. I suspect that had Shahzad’s bomb been successful, lots of tolerant, “co-exist” types would have died right alongside us “intolerant racists”. The times call for careful profiling and suspicious curiosity as well as daily preparation.

Dress everyday as if you had a business meeting in Mumbai on 26 November 2008 with a bunch of Jews, Christians, and atheist Americans at a cafe right across the street from the Jihad School Of Terrorism.

Be ready or be a victim.

“Be ready or be a victim.” Great words to live by.
