Off The X Training Concepts Announces 2017 Preparedness, Self-Protection Classes In Glenview, Illinois

Any Chicagoland readers familiar with Off The X Training Concepts in Glenview, Illinois? I’ve mentioned the north suburban preparedness/personal safety training outfit before on Survival And Prosperity, but never really dedicated a full post to them. From their Facebook page:

Off the X Training Concepts was created to offer an extensive selection of training opportunities in the areas of preparedness and self-protection. It was founded on the belief that every individual should have access to information and training, better preparing them to take ownership of their personal safety and the safety of loved ones. Unlike many training schools and programs, OTX does not promote or teach a specific school of thought or discipline, but instead acts as a hub for a variety of training platforms and instruction. This allows the individual access to a variety of philosophies, which enables them the ability to find what works best for them…

The reason I bring up OTX, as they’re also known by, is that I spotted the following post this morning on their Facebook page regarding upcoming training opportunities:

WE ARE BACK!! OTX is pleased to announce several upcoming training offerings for 2017!!

In March and October we will be hosting Craig Douglas / Shivworks for their EWO and ECQC classes.

Also in March we will begin offering monthly boxing/conditioning groups instructed by Fernando (Beast) Rivera.

Beginning in April, OTX will be hosting an Illinois concealed carry class every other month.

In June we are super excited to be hosting a combined two day training to be taught by Cecil Burch of Immediate Action Combatives, Larry Lindenman of Point Driven Training and Paul Sharp of Sharp Defense. The course is entitled Dominating the entangled fight.

In July we have several course offerings to include a two day medical class being taught by Caleb Causey from Lone Star Medics, a firearms skill building class and a firearms home defense class.

And this is just the beginning. We look forward to introducing several new weekly and monthly training offerings. Specific event postings will follow in the days to come!!!!

(Editor’s note: Bold added for more information)

Sounds terrific. For more information about Off The X Training Concepts and these opportunities, head on over to their website here and Facebook page here (much more info on their Facebook page).

Nexersys For Self-Defense Training

I’m a big believer in getting into shape before times get real tough. Good physical- and mental- fitness will probably be important for successfully weathering the coming financial storm. As I could stand to lose a few pounds, a TV commercial for a fitness product called Nexersys caught my eye the other day. Not only does it look like it provides a good workout, but it might even be a decent self-defense training tool as well. From their website:

Nexersys is leading a fitness revolution, and pioneering the expanding “Exergaming” market with the iNTELLIGENT and iNTERACTIVE Nexersys. Combining the latest in exercise equipment and interactive gaming, Nexersys is a professional-grade multimedia fitness product that delivers the motivation of a personal trainer, the benefits of a mixed martial arts high-intensity interval training workout, and the entertainment and feedback available from today’s gaming and computer technology. Nexersys provides a unique combination of cardio, strength, endurance, and mental acuity training in a single, revolutionary piece of equipment.

As the editor of a blog that focuses in part on personal safety, it’s that bit about “the benefits of a mixed martial arts high-intensity interval training workout” that really interests me. According to the Nexersys site:

I’ve never done any striking related fitness. Will I learn proper technique?

Yes. Even if you’ve never strapped on a pair of gloves, Nexersys is for you. The program includes rounds dedicated to teaching you proper technique while throwing all of the strikes you will need. During each of the strike video training workouts, your trainer will demonstrate and reinforce proper technique. Your power, endurance, speed and mental agility will improve as you move through the program.

“Striking-related fitness” sounds intimidating. Is it hard to learn?

Not at all. Our trainer will take you through technique rounds where you focus exclusively on learning how to strike. During the workout rounds, you will repeat each strike several times. This allows you to first get familiar with the feel of the strike and over time, improve your technique, speed and power.

And from Wikipedia:

The Nexersys’ techniques may be influenced by martial arts such as Kung-Fu, Karate, Muay Thai, Judo, streetfighting, Boxing, Aikido, Ju-Jitsu and Krav Maga. The Nexersys also shows ties to Wing Chun, a Chinese martial art that emphasizes close-range combat. Like mixed martial arts, Wing Chun utilizes both striking and grappling. One of the primary concepts of Wing Chung is the Six Gates principle which divides the body into upper right, upper left, middle right, middle left, lower right, and lower left zones.

The Nexersys can be seen as an adaptation of the Mu ren zhuang, a kind of wooden dummy that is used by Wing Chun instructors and often seen in martial arts films. It consists of a thick body post and four smaller limb posts mounted on a slightly flexible structure to simulate a live opponent.

Sounds neat. Traditional training personnel, methods, and equipment obviously do the job. However, the Nexersys appears to bring all of these together in one convenient, cost-effective, and possibly fun workout machine.

You can find out more information about Nexersys at their website here.

(Editor’s note: I am not compensated in any way by the Nexersys Corporation for blogging about this, readers visiting their website, or by readers purchasing their product. I just thought the machine looked cool and had promise as it concerns self-defense training.)
