Anti-Trump Rallies Saturday

On Saturday, November 4, a number of anti-Trump (and Pence) rallies are scheduled to take place in various American cities. Caleb Parke reported on the FOX News website tonight:

A series of anti-government, leftist rallies set to descend on major cities nationwide Saturday is drawing the attention of local officials, who, like the organizers themselves, fear the events could be hijacked by violent masked anarchists.

The left-wing “Refuse Fascism” group is using Nov. 4 as its kickoff for demonstrations in nearly two dozen U.S. cities, protests it says will continue “day after day and night after night- not stopping- until our DEMAND is met.”

The “DEMAND” is the removal of President Trump and Vice President Pence…

(Editor’s note: Bold added for emphasis)

Parke added that the 20 cities where rallies are set to take place include Atlanta, Austin, Boston, Chicago, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Honolulu, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, New York City, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Seattle.

According to the Refuse Fascism website, here are the details for the Chicago event:

Chicago, November 4
1:00 pm
Federal Plaza, 219 S. Dearborn

Federal Plaza. My old stomping ground.

Anyway, just be advised should you have plans in these particular cities tomorrow.

For readers going into areas where rallies are scheduled to take place and who have concerns about the gatherings turning into riots, you might want to consider the following advice from Dr. Bones and Nurse Amy of Survival Medicine Handbook-fame (now in it’s 3rd edition):

Resource Of The Week: Hillsdale College’s Free ‘Constitution 101’ Online Course

Although I don’t think I’ve ever met anyone who’s attended Hillsdale College (a small liberal arts college in Hillsdale, Michigan), I’ve only heard good things about the school. And here’s one more “good thing” to come out of “the conservative Harvard,” as it’s been called. From the college’s website:

FREE Constitution 101 ONLINE COURSE

For a limited time only

Understand the Constitution like never before – for FREE

Activate your free Constitution 101 course today!

The U.S. Constitution is the key to securing liberty for all Americans — yet very few know exactly what it says and what freedoms it protects. Hillsdale College is working to make 2015 the “Year of the Constitution,” dedicating this year to educating millions of Americans about this critical document. That’s why the College is offering its most popular course, “Constitution 101” for free, when you sign up now.

Hillsdale’s course, Constitution 101: The Meaning and History of the Constitution, features the same professors who teach this course on Hillsdale College’s campus. Hillsdale is one of the only colleges in America — outside of the military academies — that requires every student to take a course on the Constitution to graduate.

The course is delivered via email, with one lesson per week for 10 weeks. Each lesson features lively teaching and discussion boards, suggested readings, weekly quizzes, and more…

“Constitution 101 TV Spot”
YouTube Video

By Hillsdale College’s reputation alone, I’m guessing the approach taken by the course won’t be one of the U.S. Constitution being interpreted as a so-called “living document.” Or a meaningless scap of paper. So prospective enrollees may want to keep that in mind.

“Constitution 101” isn’t the only class being offered for free by Hillsdale. Current courses include “The Federalist Papers” and “A Proper Understanding of K-12 Education: Theory and Practice.” Archived instruction includes (as of April 2, 2015):

• Economics 101- The Principles of Free Market Economics
• History 102: American Heritage- From Colonial Settlement to the Reagan Revolution
• History 101: Western Heritage- From the Book of Genesis to John Locke
• Constitution 201- The Progressive Rejection of the Founding and the Rise of Bureaucratic Despotism

Along with “Constitution 101”. According to the website:

Hillsdale College offers free, not-for-credit online courses by its faculty. These online versions are based upon those in the College’s undergraduate Core Curriculum, which all Hillsdale students must complete prior to graduation.

In addition to lectures, these online courses feature readings, study guides, quizzes, and discussion groups. There is also an opportunity to receive certificates of completion for each course.

Ready to get schooled? Head on over to the Hillsdale College here for more information about and to register for “Constitution 101” and those other courses.

And feel free to pass this along to legislators you think could use a “refresher” on the Constitution of the United States of America.

I can think of more than a few who fit this bill off the top of my head…

Quote For The Week

“I hate everything about this country. Like, I hate fat white Americans. All the people who are crunched into the middle of America, the real fat and meat of America, are these racist conservative white people who live on their farms. Those little teenage girls who work at Kmart and have a racist grandma- that’s really America.”

-African-American rapper Azealia Banks, in an interview with Playboy for their April 2015 issue

(Editor’s note: Ms. Banks indicated elsewhere in the exchange that, “As long as I have my money, I’m getting the fuck out of here and I’m gonna leave y’all to your own devices.” How about staying and putting some of that wealth to work fighting true racial injustice? Not that crap seized upon by race agitators these days.)

The Economist Magazine Investigates Preppers

“Some Americans find survivalists sinister. After Adam Lanza shot 26 people in a school in Newtown, Connecticut in 2012, the media made much of the fact that his mother was a gun-stockpiling prepper. Yet there is no evidence that preppers in general are more dangerous than their compatriots. On the contrary, when natural disasters strike, it is useful to have neighbours who know how to stormproof a house and have bandages to spare.”

The Economist website, December 17, 2014

Late this morning, I stumbled on an article on The Economist website about preppers. I just finished reading “Preparing for the apocalypse: I will survive,” and thought I’d blog about it a little. The author (couldn’t find a name attached with the piece for some reason) did a pretty good job writing about preppers/survivalists, not falling victim to the usual stereotypes/generalizing echoed in a comment on the article. From “walrusandthecarpenter”:

Preppers are people who are unhappy with their life and can’t wait for the end of the world to come and the tables to turn. They are excited for it to happen.

Me? I like my smartphone. I have a first aid kit though.

“I like my smartphone.” What a goof.

Like I was saying, the author did a pretty good job (points deducted for trying to link those Westboro folks to preppers) with the material. I found what James Wesley, Rawles of SurvivalBlog.com-fame had to say particularly interesting. From the article:

So how might TEOTWAWKI come about? The biggest threat, says Mr Rawles, is a huge solar flare. The last big one, in 1859, known as the “Carrington Event”, disabled telegraph lines. A similar disaster today would “fry the circuitry” of electronic devices and take out the power grid “from end to end”. It would take years to reactivate. Perhaps 60% of the American population could die, predicts Mr Rawles…

I’ve seen some put that die-off figure at 90 percent.

There was also this about present-day preppers:

Survivalists vary politically—just as they are dispersed geographically—and their views colour their apocalyptic imaginings. Many are conservatives, worried about crime, terrorism and hyperinflation and sure that the state cannot be relied upon to protect ordinary citizens. But a fair number are environmentalists, convinced that the planet can only take so much abuse before it becomes uninhabitable. The movement is broad enough to encompass anyone who suspects that disaster is looming, for any reason. It used to be mostly “Bible-believing Christian conservatives”, says Mr Rawles, “But now we have a lot of alfalfa-munching Birkenstock-wearing leftists.” He adds: “The more the better.”

One more reason for me not to bash specific political ideologies/parties- except when they really ask for it, of course.

(Editor’s note: Any former readers of Boom2Bust.com out there remember when I used to savage “Dubya” and Hank Paulson? Thinking of that reminds me this giant economic mess belongs to both sides of the political aisle.)

Jason Charles, a New York firefighter of Doomsday Preppers-fame (blogged about here), is also featured in the piece.

You can read the well-written article in its entirety on The Economist website here.

Eric Holder: Domestic Terrorism Executive Committee Created To Combat ‘Homegrown’ Terrorists

Occasionally when I hear/see the word “Committee” used in reference to an ad hoc, high-level governmental entity, my thoughts drift to another time and place I’ve read about in the history books.

1793 France. And the Comité De Salut Public (Committee of Public Safety)

From the Encyclopaedia Brtiannica website:

The Committee of Public Safety was set up on April 6, 1793, during one of the crises of the Revolution, when France was beset by foreign and civil war. The new committee was to provide for the defense of the nation against its enemies, foreign and domestic…

I heard this morning that a mothballed committee at the federal level has just been resurrected. Timothy Phelps reported on the Los Angeles Times website yesterday morning:

Atty. Gen. Eric H. Holder, Jr. on Monday announced the creation of a task force within the Justice Department to combat an “escalating danger” from “homegrown” terrorists within the United States.

The task force will chiefly comprise leaders from the FBI, the Justice Department’s National Security Division and U.S. Attorneys. Called the Domestic Terrorism Executive Committee, it is a recreation of a task force formed by former Atty. Gen. Janet Reno after the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing. The task force fell into disuse after 9/11.

Though the original task force, which was little known, focused mainly on right-wing zealots, Holder’s version is aimed at U.S. citizens or visitors radicalized via the Internet

(Editor’s note: Bold added for emphasis)

While I don’t dispute the threat posed by “homegrown” terrorists to public safety and the need for the federal government to keep on top of this matter, I also fear the Domestic Terrorism Executive Committee could eventually go the way of the Committee of Public Safety, which under Maximilien François Marie Isidore Robespierre spearheaded the ensuing Reign of Terror in France.

Already there’s chatter across the Internet of DTEC being used against the “enemies” of the Obama administration.

Mikael Thalen wrote on Infowars.com earlier today:

In reality, Holder’s task force will undoubtedly focus on the Obama administration’s political enemies, mainly returning military veterans, conservatives and those who identify with the Tea Party. Such groups have been increasingly linked to terrorism by multiple federal agencies…

Undoubtedly? Let’s hope the targeting of political “enemies” isn’t the real intention behind resurrecting and giving life to DTEC.

All I know is this. If that Nevada rancher- Cliven Bundy- and others like him get designated “homegrown terrorists” in the coming days/weeks/months, I’ll get suspicious as to the real motives of the Domestic Terrorism Executive Committee.

In the meantime, I’ll give the Committee the benefit of the doubt regarding their stated mission.

Quote For The Week

“It’s been a bad week for MSNBC, and a bad week for serious journalism. First, the network learned to regret giving Alec Baldwin a job after he called a photographer a word that is more than a little homophobic. MSNBC have since suspended his show for two weeks. Now, Martin Bashir has scraped the bottom of the proverbial barrel after launching a tirade against Sarah Palin (“America’s resident dunce”) that has to be seen to be believed. And you’re warned: it is stomach churning.

The beloved liberal journalist used his afternoon TV show to deliver a somewhat justified critique of a comparison Palin made between national debt and slavery. His analysis starts crudely and rudely enough, but it ends with a truly shocking suggestion that someone defecate in the former governor’s mouth to teach her a lesson. I’m not making this up. Quote:

Given her well-established reputation as a world class idiot, it’s hardly surprising that [Palin] should choose to mention slavery in a way that is abominable to anyone who knows anything about its barbaric history.

So here’s an example. One of the most comprehensive first-person accounts of slavery comes from the personal diary of a man called Thomas Thistlewood, who kept copious notes for 39 years. Thistlewood was the son of a tenant farmer, who arrived on the island of Jamaica in April 1750, and assumed the position of overseer at a major plantation. What is most shocking about Thistlewood’s diary is not simply the fact that he assumes the right to own and possess other human beings, but is the sheer cruelty and brutality of his regime. In 1756, he records that a slave named Darby ‘catched eating kanes; had him well flogged and pickled, then made Hector, another slave, s-h-i-t in his mouth.’ This became known as ‘Darby’s Dose,’ a punishment invented by Thistlewood that spoke only of inhumanity. And he mentions a similar incident in 1756, his time in relation to a man he refers to as Punch. ‘Flogged Punch well, and then washed and rubbed salt pickle, lime juice and bird pepper. Made Negro Joe piss in his eyes and mouth’. I could go on, but you get the point. When Mrs. Palin invokes slavery, she doesn’t just prove her rank ignorance. She confirms if anyone truly qualified for a dose of discipline from Thomas Thistlewood, she would be the outstanding candidate.

‘If anyone truly qualified for a dose of discipline from Thomas Thistlewood, she would be the outstanding candidate.’ Wow.

There’s a popular myth that all the hate in US politics comes from the Right. Here’s proof that there’s plenty on the Left, too.”

-Dr. Tim Stanley, British historian and author, writing on The Telegraph (UK) website Saturday.

By the way, from Dr. Stanley’s personal website:

I love America deeply and I suspect she is the last hope for mankind (I really don’t want to have to learn Chinese).

Too funny.

Quote For The Week

“Well, the whole thing is quite simple. We have one party that promisess endless freebies from education, healthcare, to food stamps, and even contraceptives. Then we have another party that promises austerity, cutting social security benefits, spending…etc. Guess who the voters go for? It doesn’t matter what you believe in, because the force of enticing you with ‘free stuff’ is just too overwhelming.

Even places like AZ and TX, traditionally conservative are all trending towards liberals. That’s the direction period.

I’v already tried to fight the devils for years, but honestly I’m exhausted. Now my vote goes to anyone that promises to give me more free stuff.

Screw the Constitutions, self reliance…”
