Nearly 1 Out Of 3 City Of Chicago Workers Made $100K Or More Last Year

Having lived in a northwest side neighborhood chock-full of City of Chicago employees prior to moving out to the ‘burbs, I wasn’t really surprised to learn of the following. Chris Fusco and Tim Novak reported on the Chicago Sun-Times website yesterday:

Nearly one out of every three workers on the city of Chicago payroll made $100,000 or more last year — a far higher percentage of six-figure employees than in state or Cook County government.

That’s according to a Chicago Sun-Times analysis that for the first time combines city workers’ salaries, overtime and other extra pay.

Twenty-six city workers drew paychecks that eclipsed Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s pay of $216,210, the analysis found. They included a police detective, two fire department ambulance commanders and two water department operating engineers…

(Editor’s note: Bold added for emphasis)

Fusco and Novak noted that there were 35,761 City of Chicago employees last year. And nearly 1 out of 3 made $100K or more? Nice gig if you can get it, right? Regrettably, I predict that when tough financial times finally arrive at the Windy City’s doorstep, even “clout” won’t be able to protect certain positions and salaries from getting slashed.

Cook County President Toni Preckwinkle To Tax Ammunition Sales?

Gun “control” (or gun “safety” as certain word wankers are now trying to call it) is on the march again in Cook County. From a County blog post Friday:

In an effort to reduce gun violence and improve public safety by creating new revenue for preventative actions, President Preckwinkle is also proposing a tax on rounds of ammunition sold in Cook County. The ammunition tax, either a penny or nickel per round depending on the category of ammunition, is aimed at addressing the costs of future gun crimes and the revenue generated will be dedicated to public safety initiatives.

President Preckwinkle, long an advocate of common sense gun laws, previously supported and passed a $25 tax on gun sales in Cook County. She has advocated for legislation that would ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, require registration of existing firearms and require background checks on all firearms sales at gun shows — commonly referred to as the “gun show loophole.”

(Editor’s note: Bold added for emphasis)

Tax law-abiding firearm owners in Cook County for the actions of criminals? Yeah, that makes a lot of “common sense.” You see, felons and other convicted criminals can’t purchase ammunition legally in Cook County, because they shouldn’t be able to get an Illinois State Police-issued Firearm Owner’s Identification Card. From the Illinois State Police, Firearm Services Bureau website:

Unless specifically exempted by statute, any Illinois resident who acquires or possesses firearms, firearm ammunition, tasers or stun guns within the State must have in their possession a valid FOID card issued in his or her name…

To be eligible for a FOID card, a person must be 21 years of age or have a parent or guardian sponsor that is eligible for a FOID card. An applicant must not be prohibited from possessing firearms in accordance with state or federal law. This requires the applicant is/has:

• Not been convicted of a felony…
• Not subject to an existing order of protection.
• Not been convicted within the past 5 years of battery, assault, aggravated assault, violation of an order of protection, or a substantially similar offense in another jurisdiction, in which a firearm was used or possessed.
• Not been convicted of domestic battery, aggravated domestic battery, or a substantially similar offense in another jurisdiction…
• Not convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence…

So what’s President Preckwinkle’s goal from a Cook County ammo tax then? My guess is gun “safety.” Something tells me we’ll be seeing the county in court if they decide to pursue this matter.

Illinois Open Range Program To Be Held On November 14

Speaking of guns and the Illinois State Police, it’s that time of year again in the “Land of Lincoln.” From the website of central Illinois NBC affiliate WAND 17 on Friday:

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is teaming up with Illinois State Police to promote hunting safety through the annual Open Range Program on November 14.

Officials say hunters and observers will be invited to ISP ranges in order to check the sighting in their shotguns…

Ranges in Effingham, Pawnee, Pittsfield, Macomb, Joliet, and LaSalle will be open for the program from 8 AM until 4 PM this coming Saturday. For more information, head on over to WAND 17’s website here.

Greece’s Government Confiscating Contents Of Bank Safe Deposit Boxes?

Last week, I was working on my offshore asset protection-related projects quite a bit. And here’s something disturbing I noted Friday in a post on Offshore Safe Deposit Boxes that may interest you:

Just when the reputation of bank safe deposit boxes couldn’t get any worse comes this out of Greece. Anthee Carasavva reported on The Times (UK) website back on October 12:

Greece’s government is raiding savers’ safe deposit boxes to raise revenue and stamp out tax evasion.

Tryfon Alexiadis, the deputy finance minister, said yesterday that Greeks owing more than €150,000 in back taxes would be targeted. Those suspected of tax evasion would also come under scrutiny and their bank deposit boxes prised open without notice

“Safe deposit boxes across the country will be subject to these inspections immediately,” Mr Alexiadis told an Athens-based TV network…

(Editor’s note: Bold added for emphasis)

It’s being reported that the tax inspectors could seize half of the cash found, and stocks, bonds, jewelry, and works of art. You can read the entire post in its entirety here on my other blog.

Chicago: 54 Shot, 8 Killed Over Labor Day Weekend

Labor Day Weekend is over. So is the summer slowdown on Survival And Prosperity. I guess it’s only appropriate the new “season” on the blog should kick-off with the following headline that’s making the rounds locally this morning. From the Chicago Tribune website:

“54 shot, 8 fatally, over Labor Day Weekend”

A year ago, those numbers were 40 shot, 3 killed.

It’s only a matter of time now before the gun “control” crowd is in the local media outlets calling for even more restrictions.

As they make their emotion-driven pleas, Chicagoans might want to keep the following in mind. Fran Main reported on the Chicago Sun-Times website on August 29:

Chicago criminals are finicky about how they get their guns, according to a new study by the University of Chicago Crime Lab.

In a survey of almost 100 detainees in the Cook County Jail, few said they get firearms at gun shows or through the Internet, said Harold Pollack, co-director of the crime lab. They also said they don’t normally steal guns or buy them at a licensed store

And most said they got the weapons through personal connections because they feared getting caught in a law-enforcement sting or being robbed by a stranger…

(Editor’s note: Bold added for emphasis)

Kind of derails the gun “control” narrative about gun show/Internet “loopholes” these days, doesn’t it? And from the University of Chicago no less. Still, a larger survey pool would have been nice here.

There’s also this gem (which I had been trying to find for a while now) from Angela Caputo on the website of nonprofit investigative news organization The Chicago Reporter back on December 19, 2013:

From January 2006 through August 2013, thousands of cases involving a weapons violation were thrown out in Cook County’s criminal courts, The Chicago Reporter found. More than 13,000 cases that included a gun violation have been dismissed during that period, shows the Reporter’s analysis of records maintained by the Clerk of the Circuit Court of Cook County. In fact, more felony cases involving a gun–from illegal possession to unlawful sale to a felon–have been thrown out than cases with any other type of charge…

(Editor’s note: Bold added for emphasis)

More gun “control” in the city after this Labor Day Weekend’s carnage? Please. That quote about insanity often attributed to Albert Einstein comes to mind here:

“Insanity- Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results”

As those with brains figured out a long time ago, it’s not the legal gun owners who are behind this violence (although they make convenient scapegoats for the politicians and their ilk). It’s the criminals, who for the most part don’t obtain firearms legally (University of Chicago Crime Lab survey) and who roam the streets of Chicago with impunity because gun laws already on the books aren’t being enforced on a regular basis for one reason or another (Chicago Reporter).

What those reasons are requires scrutiny going forward. Then again, it would also mean some people with the power to make a real difference here would have to grow cajones too…

U.S. House Voting On ‘High-Capacity’ Ammunition Magazine Ban Friday?

Well that was fast. Patricia Zengerle reported on the Reuters website earlier today:

Democratic legislators said on Wednesday they had seen a groundswell of opposition to the continued sale of high-capacity ammunition magazines and pushed Republicans in the House of Representatives to vote to ban them this week.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and other Democrats called for a vote on Friday at a news conference announcing a new Gun Control Task Force that was attended by more than two dozen House Democrats.

(Editor’s note: Italics added for emphasis)

This latest proposed firearm-related ban comes as President Obama urged Congress on Wednesday to vote on banning the sale of “assault weapons” and requiring background checks before any firearm sale. Philip Rucker and Scott Wilson reported on the Washington Post website tonight:

The potential gun-control measures, which will be the focus of a working group led by Vice President Biden, mark the most specific proposals to date from Obama to deal with what he called a gun violence epidemic plaguing the United States.

The move pleased gun-control advocates and many Democrats who have been disappointed with Obama’s inaction on the issue during his first term…

Obama told reporters at the White House that he expected the group, which will feature key Cabinet secretaries, to bring him recommendations in January. He said he intends to discuss the issue in his State of the Union address.

(Editor’s note: Italics added for emphasis)

Regarding these “high-capacity” magazines and “Obama’s inaction,” this brings to mind a piece from the same media outlet in which Jason Horowitz reported on April 11, 2011:

On March 30, the 30th anniversary of the assassination attempt on President Ronald Reagan, Jim Brady, who sustained a debilitating head wound in the attack, and his wife, Sarah, came to Capitol Hill to push for a ban on the controversial “large magazines.” Brady, for whom the law requiring background checks on handgun purchasers is named, then met with White House press secretary Jay Carney. During the meeting, President Obama dropped in and, according to Sarah Brady, brought up the issue of gun control, “to fill us in that it was very much on his agenda,” she said.

“I just want you to know that we are working on it,” Brady recalled the president telling them. “We have to go through a few processes, but under the radar.”

Not only are Obama and many of his fellow Democrats now working out in the open these days towards more gun “control” in America. They own this baby now.

Barack Obama Calls For Reintroducing ‘Assault Weapons’ Ban In Second Presidential Debate

Almost on a weekly basis I read somewhere that Barack Obama and the Democrats will not pursue more gun “control” should the President be reelected.

President Obama’s supposed “inaction” during his first term is brought up as “evidence” of this.

Yet, as I pointed out back on September 6, the Democratic Party’s 2012 National Platform that was approved at their National Convention called for “reinstating the assault weapons ban and closing the gun show loophole.”

Excuse me, but that’s pushing for a gun ban and more gun “control,” if I’m not mistaken.

Any remaining doubts about President Obama and the Democrats wanting more regulations placed on firearms should have been dispelled last night in the second of a series of U.S. Presidential debates. When asked what his administration has “done or plan to do to limit the availability of assault weapons,” the sitting U.S. President replied:

So my belief is that A, we have to enforce the laws we’ve already got, make sure that we’re keeping guns out of the hands of criminals, those who are mentally ill. We’ve done a much better job in terms of background checks, but we’ve got more to do when it comes to enforcement.

But I also share your belief that weapons that were designed for soldiers in war theaters don’t belong on our streets. And so what I’m trying to do is to get a broader conversation about how do we reduce the violence generally. Part of it is seeing if we can get an assault weapons ban reintroduced, but part of it is also looking at other sources of the violence, because frankly, in my hometown of Chicago, there’s an awful lot of violence, and they’re not using AK-47s, they’re using cheap handguns.

(Editor’s note: Italics added for emphasis)

“Part of it is seeing if we can get an assault weapons ban reintroduced.”

Once again, calling for a new gun ban. Two times. Two months.

At this point, no one can honestly say Barack Obama and the Democrats don’t plan on pushing for more gun “control” should the President be reelected without looking incredibly stupid.

WSJ: Guns And Ammo Retailers Prepare For Presidential Election

49 days until Election Day.

And the sale of guns and ammunition is brisk due to fears President Barack Obama will be re-elected and move to implement the gun “control” measures spelled out in the Democratic Party’s national platform during a second term in the White House.

Well, this weekend I came across an interesting piece on the Wall Street Journal website about how the November election is influencing guns and ammo businesses in America. Shelly Banjo wrote Friday:

As Cabela’s Inc. prepares the selection of guns it will sell for the holiday season and winter hunting, the outdoor-gear retailer has two plans: one if President Barack Obama is re-elected, and one if he isn’t.

The Sidney, Neb.-based retailer and other companies in the guns-and-ammo business say if Mr. Obama wins a second term they are preparing for a surge in sales—the same as they saw after he was elected in 2008—from buyers fearful the president would back policies to make buying a gun more difficult. If Republican challenger Mitt Romney wins, though, the chain plans to stock more items such as waterproof boots and camouflage hunting gear…

Anyone contemplating firearm and/or ammunition purchases might want to digest what the WSJ article had to say. You can read the entire piece on their website here.

It’s Official: Democrats To Push For More Gun ‘Control’

Now that the Democratic Party’s 2012 National Platform has been approved and- ahem- subsequently “amended,” I wanted to compare it to the Republican Party’s 2012 National Platform as it concerns firearms. From the Democrats’ Moving America Forward: 2012 Democratic National Platform:

Firearms. We recognize that the individual right to bear arms is an important part of the American tradition, and we will preserve Americans’ Second Amendment right to own and use firearms. We believe that the right to own firearms is subject to reasonable regulation. We understand the terrible consequences of gun violence; it serves as a reminder that life is fragile, and our time here is limited and precious. We believe in an honest, open national conversation about firearms. We can focus on effective enforcement of existing laws, especially strengthening our background check system, and we can work together to enact commonsense improvements – like reinstating the assault weapons ban and closing the gun show loophole – so that guns do not fall into the hands of those irresponsible, law-breaking few.

And from the Republicans’ We Believe in America: Republican Platform 2012:

The Second Amendment: Our Right to Keep and Bear Arms

We uphold the right of individuals to keep and bear arms, a right which antedated the Constitution and was solemnly confirmed by the Second Amendment. We acknowledge, support, and defend the law-abiding citizen’s God-given right of self-defense. We call for the protection of such fundamental individual rights recognized in the Supreme Court’s decisions in District of Columbia v. Heller and McDonald v. Chicago affirming that right, and we recognize the individual responsibility to safely use and store firearms. This also includes the right to obtain and store ammunition without registration. We support the fundamental right to self-defense wherever a law-abiding citizen has a legal right to be, and we support federal legislation that would expand the exercise of that right by allowing those with state-issued carry permits to carry firearms in any state that issues such permits to its own residents. Gun ownership is responsible citizenship, enabling Americans to defend their homes and communities. We condemn frivolous lawsuits against gun manufacturers and oppose federal licensing or registration of law-abiding gun owners. We oppose legislation that is intended to restrict our Second Amendment rights by limiting the capacity of clips or magazines or otherwise restoring the ill-considered Clinton gun ban. We condemn the reckless actions associated with the operation known as “Fast and Furious,” conducted by the Department of Justice, which resulted in the murder of a U.S. Border Patrol Agent and others on both sides of the border. We applaud the Members of the U.S. House of Representatives in holding the current Administration’s Attorney General in contempt of Congress for his refusal to cooperate with their investigation into that debacle. We oppose the improper collection of firearms sales information in the four southern border states, which was imposed without congressional authority.

As recent as this week, it’s been claimed sitting U.S. President Barack Obama has barely pushed for more gun “control” during his time in the White House. From the 2012 Democratic National Convention host city’s own The Charlotte Observer this Tuesday:

Obama hasn’t proposed any anti-gun legislation during his first term, and his talk about gun control has been almost non-existent these last four years.

He didn’t need to, in retrospect. Because, contrary to the pro-gun stance adopted by the Republican Party, more gun “control” is now blatantly codified in the Democratic Party’s 2012 national platform.

“We can work together to enact commonsense improvements – like reinstating the assault weapons ban and closing the gun show loophole…”

A new gun ban? Closing the gun show “loophole?” Undeniably, those are calls for more regulation of firearms.

As one Hollywood gun “control” supporter might have argued in TV commercials he used to star in… the proof is in the pudding.

Watch The 26th Annual Gun Rights Policy Conference

The other weekend, the 26th Annual Gun Rights Policy Conference (GRPC 2011) was held around my neck of the woods at the Hyatt Regency Chicago O’Hare hotel from September 23 to 25. Regrettably, I caught some bug the night before and was more-or-less bedridden for the duration of the conference.

If you missed the event like me but wanted to be there, I’ve got some great news. You can watch both days (Friday was just registration/reception) of the Gun Rights Policy Conference on the Internet (hat tip Massad Ayoob and his Massad Ayoob on Guns blog on the Backwoods Home Magazine website).

Here’s some background from the Second Amendment Foundation website:

This year we’ll take a look at critical issues such as: city gun bans, “smart” guns, concealed carry, federal legislation, BATFE policies, legal actions, gun show regulation, state and local activity. We’ll also review the 2010 elections, discuss the 2012 Presidential race and analyze Right to Keep and Bear Arms court cases.

You can download the agenda for the conference from the SAF site here (.pdf file)

And last but not least, you can watch GRPC 2011 below, courtesy of Mark Vanderberg and Doc Wesson of the Gun Rights Radio Network:
