Maxon’s Gun Shop, Range Coming To DuPage County?

The last time I blogged about Maxon Shooter’s Supplies and Indoor Range in the near-northwest suburb of Des Plaines, I was congratulating them back in February 2015 on receiving a prestigious Five Star rating from the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF).

These days, Maxon’s is in the local news for their proposed expansion into DuPage County, Illinois. Erin Hegarty reported on the Chicago Tribune website on November 23:

Preliminary plans have been proposed for an indoor shooting range and gun shop in Warrenville, just across the street from Naperville on Ferry Road.

Naperville resident Dan Eldridge already owns the Maxon Shooter’s Supplies and Indoor Range in Des Plaines. Building a second location in Warrenville was a necessity because he needs more classroom space, he said, but it will also fill a void for this type of business in the western suburbs.

“This would allow us to grow in an underserved area in Chicagoland,” Eldridge said.

The new location on 7-plus acres at 30W255 Ferry Road will serve residents in Warrenville, Naperville and Aurora – a market that lacks facilities for shooting classes and practice ranges, he said. Its proximity to Route 59 and Interstate 88 will allow them to attract shooting enthusiasts from as far as 20 to 30 miles away, he said…

(Editor’s note: Bold added for emphasis)

According to Hegarty, Maxon’s owner figures the new facility would employ about 25 full- and part-time workers.

You can read the entire article on the Chicago Tribune website here. And for more information about Maxon’s, head on over to their site here.

Maxon Shooter’s Supplies And Indoor Range In Des Plaines Awarded 5-Star Rating From NSSF

Firearm enthusiasts in the Chicago area might have heard of Maxon Shooter’s Supplies and Indoor Range in the near-northwest suburb of Des Plaines. While I haven’t visited their new facility (yet), I have had some interaction with Maxon’s in the past, assisting their office manager in late 2012 with populating the “Helpful Resources” area of their website. This weekend, I happened to be poking around the Illinois State Rifle Association’s website when I spotted the following:

Maxon Shooters Supplies & Indoor Range has been awarded the prestigious Five Star rating from the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF). The NSSF evaluates facility amenities, cleanliness and appearance, customer service, community involvement and overall management. There are just 58 shooting ranges throughout the United States that have received a Five Star rating from the NSSF. In December of last year, a representative from the NSSF conducted a thorough inspection of the Maxon facility and interviewed personnel. After completing the inspection, the NSSF representative consulted with his colleagues which ultimately resulted in the awarding of the Five Star rating for Maxon. The nearest Five Star-rated range is over 300 miles from Chicago in Ohio. Maxon Shooters Supplies & Indoor Range is the only range in Illinois to have achieved this distinction

(Editor’s note: Bold added for emphasis)

Congratulations to Maxon’s on this terrific achievement.

As “Shotgun Joe” Biden would say, “This is a big f*****g deal.”

You can read the rest of the ISRA piece on Maxon’s here, and visit the gun store and range’s website here.

Chicago’s Gun ‘Control’ Fetish Costing City Big Bucks

If I still lived in Chicago, I’d be livid at City Hall the way those guys keep pissing away hard-earned taxpayer dollars challenging litigation in defense of gun rights.

How many dollars? Recently, over $1.5 million.

From the National Rifle Association’s Institute for Legislative Action website on July 11:

Check, Please! Chicago Once Again Learns an Expensive Lesson About the Second Amendment

While litigants generally bear their own costs in the American legal system, certain provisions of federal law allow parties who prevail in “proceedings in vindication of civil rights” to be awarded reasonable attorney’s fees. NRA has once again used these provisions to recoup attorney’s fees from the City of Chicago. You would think that Chicago’s disarmament-focused politicians would have learned their lesson after being court ordered to pay NRA over $600,000 in legal fees for work done by NRA attorneys on McDonald v. City of Chicago. Nevertheless, Chicago has once again been court ordered to pay NRA’s legal fees, this time $940,000 for work on Illinois Association of Firearm Retailers v. City of Chicago (formerly Benson v. City of Chicago). That case challenged the prohibition on lawful gun sales within the city. As noted earlier this week, this brings Chicago’s recent total for NRA legal fees to over $1.5 million.

That’s a lot of cash, even to politicians who are spending their constituents’ money. Still, the city’s new push to keep gun dealers away through over-regulation may well indicate that its aldermen and its mayor, Rahm Emanuel, remain willing to spend even more taxpayer funds to support even more symbolic and ineffective gun control.

“May well indicate?” Try “indicate.” Here’s what Mayor Emanuel had to say after the Chicago City Council passed what critics says is a de factor ban on gun stores in the city (special-use zoning would keep gun stores out of 99.5 percent of Chicago) late last month. Don Babwin of the Associated Press wrote June 25:

Emanuel, while not welcoming a lawsuit, suggested it was important to pass the toughest ordinance possible whether or not it prompted a legal challenge.

“You have to do what you think is right,” he said.

Easy to say- and do- such things when it’s other people’s money on the line.

Illinois State Rifle Association: ‘Bloomberg Moms’ Spanked On Niles Gun Store, Range Issue

Last Wednesday, I blogged about an upcoming meeting in the Chicago suburb of Niles regarding a proposed gun store and range there. The Illinois State Rifle Association warned on its website that a “Chicago-based extremist gun control group affiliated with the Bloomberg Moms” was trying to prevent the facility from opening up in town. The Village of Niles held a meeting about the matter on Monday. From the ISRA site earlier today:

SPECIAL ALERT – NILES ZONING COMMISSION UPSETS MOMS’ APPLE CART

The shrill voice of extremism echoed through the halls of the Niles Community Center on Monday night as the Bloomberg Moms tried without success to block a special use permit that would allow a pistol range and gun shop to open in an industrial area of the village.

In the end, the voice of reason prevailed with the zoning commission sending the application ahead to the full village council by a 5-2 vote.

Of the 250 or so people who packed the community center meeting room, about 75% appeared to be in favor of permitting the shop/range. What the Moms lacked in numbers they made up for with nonsense. It wasn’t good enough for the Moms to spout their familiar and tired repertoire of unsubstantiated claims against private firearms ownership. No, the Moms sunk to new depths – launching a campaign of lies and innuendo about the qualifications and character of the entrepreneurs seeking to open the shop/range facility.

On the other hand, supporters of the shop/range proposal testified with facts showing that the range and gun shop would be a great benefit to the community in terms of educational opportunities, jobs and tax revenues. Supporters of the proposal also debunked the Moms’ claim that the opening of the shop/range facility would endanger school children in the village…

Next up? A full Village Council vote on the facility.

You can read the entire ISRA announcement on their website.

Otherwise, stay tuned…

Latest On Proposed Niles, Triton College Firearm Training Facilities

Last Wednesday I blogged about a proposed gun store and shooting range in the northwest Chicago suburb of Niles hitting a snag. Here’s the latest, courtesy of the Illinois State Rifle Association website on June 30:

URGENT ALERT – YOUR ACTION REQUIRED BLOOMBERG MOMS MAKE NILES, IL “GROUND ZERO” IN NATIONAL EFFORT TO CLOSE GUN SHOPS AND BAN RANGES

THE BIG ANTI-GUNNER LIE: “gun shops and ranges are dangerous launching points for armed attacks on schools, malls and the elderly.”

SITUATION: A team of entrepreneurs is attempting to construct and operate a gun shop and pistol range in Niles, Illinois. The purpose of the range and gun shop would be to better serve law-abiding firearm owners in the northwest suburbs. The shop and range proposal has already passed out of committee by a 6-1 vote. However, the proposal must be passed by the full village council in order for the range to open.

THREAT: A Chicago-based extremist gun control group affiliated with the Bloomberg Moms is attempting to block the construction and operation of the range and gun shop in Niles. Backed by $50 million in Bloomberg’s anti-gun war chest, the Moms are threatening political harm to local officials who support the proposed gun shop and range. This is part of a nationwide effort by the Moms to abolish private firearm ownership by shutting down all ranges and gun shops. If you care about freedom, you must help stop these radical gun-haters here and now.

ACTION REQUIRED: The Niles Village Board will be meeting soon to vote on whether or not the range will be allowed. It’s vitally important that you be there during the vote to show your support for the range. The Bloomberg Moms will certainly be there to attack the 2nd Amendment and demand that your gun rights be taken away from you. You need to be there, in Niles, to stand up and defend your rights along with the rights of millions of other Americans.

Date: Monday, July 7,2014 Time: 7:00 PM (be there by 6:15 to get a good seat) Location: Niles Village Hall, 1000 Civic Center Drive, Niles, IL 60714

PREPAREDNESS: The Bloomberg Moms are determined radicals who will go to great lengths to attack you and the 2nd Amendment. Be prepared vigorously defend your rights. Do not let these people get the upper hand in the meeting – actively challenge any attack on your right to keep and bear arms. There is no compromise. There is no common ground. It’s all or nothing in support of our Constitution!

Remember, only you can stop the antigunners. If you don’t stand up to them now, it may be all over. …

The “Bloomberg Moms.” Too funny.

And here’s something I caught on the Forest Park Review website from earlier this June that might interest local law enforcement and nearby residents seeking concealed-carry training. Jean Lotus reported:

Interest is growing among 23 Triton College feeder communities for a shared police training facility and shooting range hosted at the River Grove campus.

The community college recently sent a survey to police chiefs and village managers in 25 different towns asking about a possible shared facility, and almost all of them responded that they were open to discussing the possibility…

The current proposal is a “tactical training facility” located on the Triton campus with a state-of-the-art 24-position shooting range…

Training on judgment laser shooting and pursuit driving were just some of the requests made by survey respondents. Lotus added:

Sixty-four percent of the departments surveyed also asked for mock streetscape technology. Other suggestions were leadership training, firearms training from a vehicle, felony traffic stop scenarios, water-based courses, tactical room entry, building searches and rapid deployment training.

[Forest Park Mayor Anthony] Calderone pointed out Triton could even do concealed-carry training for civilians

Stay tuned…

Chicago To Be Sued For De Facto Gun Store Ban?

Survival And Prosperity readers outside the Chicagoland area may have heard that the City of Chicago just recently approved commercial gun sales within its city limits.

Mind you, this wasn’t done willingly.

From a June 25 press release from Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s office:

Due to the fact that a federal court has ordered the City of Chicago to allow commercial gun sales, the City drafted one of the toughest, smartest licensing laws in the country.

In order to operate with a city license, gun stores will be required to take a number of steps that are proven to minimize gun trafficking, illegal gun sales and theft including:

• Employee background checks and state-of-the-art training
• Anti-theft safety plans and quarterly inventory audits
• Video cameras to record the point of sale
• Maintain a log of all guns sales where the gun was later recovered in a crime and traced back to the store
• Sell only one handgun per month per buyer
• Make store records available to police for inspection at all reasonable times
• 72-hour waiting period to purchase handguns, and a 24-hour waiting period to purchase rifles and shotguns…

Of course, left out of the press release is any prospective gun shops would only be permitted to operate in less than one-half percent of the city. Fran Spielman reported on the Chicago Sun-Times website last Wednesday:

Special-use zoning would keep gun stores out of 99.5 percent of Chicago and at least 500 feet away from all schools and parks…

(Editor’s note: Bold added for emphasis)

Critics are adamant that when all of the above is taken into consideration, a de factor ban on gun shops in Chicago exists. Spielman added:

Richard Pearson, executive director of the Illinois State Rifle Association, has accused Emanuel of making the ordinance so restrictive, it will “make sure there are no gun shops” in Chicago.

“The license is $3,800. Your business transactions are videotaped. The costs are so high, nobody can possibly make a living doing that, so no one is going to do it,” Pearson said…

(Editor’s note: Bold added for emphasis)

So should Mayor Emanuel and the City of Chicago expect to be slapped with yet another lawsuit related to gun rights?

The Associated Press reported last Friday:

Richard Pearson of the Illinois State Rifle Association says the ordinance is so restrictive it amounts to a ban, and will likely be challenged in court.

(Editor’s note: Bold added for emphasis)

Chicagoans, get ready to bust out your wallets yet again.

And in case anyone’s interested, that press release (pdf format) is located here on the City website.

Jesse Jackson Calls For July 16 March On Gun Shops

Last weekend, African-American civil rights activist and Baptist minister Jesse Jackson, Sr., held a pre-recall vote rally up in Racine, Wisconsin. At the gathering, Reverend Jackson called for a nationwide march on gun stores this summer:

So on July 16, we’re going to be marching on gun shops- around the country.

Jackson, a candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1984 and 1988, said this of the planned march:

When you are fighting a war to protect democracy from the insurgents, the first thing you do is to stop the gun trail that’s bringing the guns to kill the people.
