Chicago Weekend Shootings: 7 Killed, 48 Wounded

This past weekend in Chicagoland was pretty warm, with Saturday really feeling like late spring. As I washed the cars that day, I thought to myself, “Will be interesting to hear how ‘Beirut By The Lake’ fares this weekend with all this nice weather.” From the revealing HeyJackass! website (“Illustrating Chicago Values”) Monday evening under “This Weekend’s Stupidity”:

Just your average summer weekend complete with three doubles, six hat tricks and a grand slam, in January.

Final Stupidity Tally: 7 killed, 48 wounded

Astute observers of Chicago’s violence are noting the significance of January’s shooting gallery. AWR Hawkins repored on Breitbart.com last night:

January 2016 was the bloodiest start for a year in at least 16 years, yet the carnage of the first three weeks of 2017 surpassed it. And this is bad omen, especially when you consider the fact that bloody January 2016 set the tone for the rest of last year

(Editor’s note: Bold added for emphasis)

“Bad omen” indeed. Stay tuned…

Chicago MLK Weekend Shootings: 10 Killed, 29 Wounded

Chicago had a peculiar way of honoring the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr., this past weekend. CBS 2 (Chicago) reported on their website this morning:

At least 39 people have been shot across Chicago over the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend, leaving 10 dead…

(Editor’s note: Bold added for emphasis)

CBS 2 also noted:

Last year, 32 people were shot over the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend, five fatally.

And from the popular HeyJackass! website (“Illustrating Chicago Values”) under “This Weekend’s Stupidity”:

2016 weekend tally: 4 killed, 27 wounded
2015 weekend tally: 4 killed, 14 wounded
2014 weekend tally: 4 killed, 13 wounded

The MLK Day carnage suggests this year could be a continuation of that deadly trend I identified in 2016- Chicago shootings increased on long holiday weekends compared to 2015.

HeyJackass! On 2016 Chicago Murder Tally: ‘We’ll Most Likely Exceed The 800 Level’

“As the gunfire dies down, HeyJackass will finalize the numbers for 2016, the Department will lie about the other numbers, death investigations will be scheduled for reclassification, Rahm will pretend that 600 black people weren’t murdered in his city by other black people, another 3,600 weren’t maimed and that 25 police shootings are the real problem…”

-New Year’s Day post on Chicago police blog Second City Cop

Happy New Year everyone. Hopefully readers were able to ring in 2017 safely- particularly those in Chicago, where the last weekend of 2016 turned out to be another bloody one.

Just how bad were shootings and murders in the “Windy City” in 2016? Well, consider the following from the CBS News website yesterday:

One of the most violent years in Chicago history ended with a sobering tally: 762 homicides, the most in two decades in the city and more than New York and Los Angeles combined

(Editor’s note: Bold added for emphasis)

That’s pretty awful. And once the final tally is in, 762 murders might be significantly lower than the actual body count.

From the popular HeyJackass! website (“Illustrating Chicago Values”):

Preliminary 2016 Totals
Shot & Killed: 713
Shot & Wounded: 3665
Total Shot: 4378
Total Homicides: 795

And under the section “New Year’s Stupidity” on the site:

While the 800 homicide gorilla awaits entry into 2016’s frunchroom, the fact is we’ll most likely exceed the 800 level soon after the New Year due to late passings and reclassified death investigations. Happy New Year!

(Editor’s note: Bold added for emphasis)

Stay tuned…

Chicago’s Christmas Weekend: 61 Shot, 11 Killed

The trend sure hasn’t been Chicago’s friend lately as shootings are concerned.

On November 30, I pointed out that shootings increased in the “Windy City” on the long holiday weekends (Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving) when compared to last year.

On December 5, I noted Chicago-area expressway shootings have also grown year-over-year since 2013.

And now there’s this from the Chicago Tribune website yesterday. Megan Crepeau, Peter Nickeas, and Katherine Rosenberg-Douglas reported:

A total of 61 people were shot in the city during the holiday weekend and 11 of them died of their wounds, according to data kept by the Tribune. Seven people were killed on Christmas Day alone, more than on the holiday the past three years combined. Three people were killed in 2015, one in 2014, and two in 2013.

The number of people shot over the holiday weekend also sharply outpaced recent years. During the Christmas weekend in 2015, 29 people were shot and seven of them died. In 2014, when Christmas fell on a Thursday, the four-day weekend included 35 people shot and seven people killed, according to Tribune data…

(Editor’s note: Bold added for emphasis)

Looks like Christmas is now part of this deadly trend.

The HeyJackass! website (“Illustrating Chicago Values”) shows 4,345 shot with 787 killed in the city year-to-date.

Wonder what kind of carnage New Year’s Eve might bring?

‘Black Lawmakers From Chicago’ Key To Reducing City’s Gun Violence?

Before the weekend, I blogged about Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson’s recent appearance on WGN-TV (Chicago Channel 9) where he discussed the city’s gun violence. Johnson brought up much-publicized (and delayed) legislation targeting repeat gun offenders, telling viewers:

So with this particular piece of legislation, we’re not changing the sentencing years. What we’re doing is giving our judicial partners the wherewithal to be able to sentence them somewhere between the mid-range to high-end of the sentencing guideline, which will be I think the high-end is maybe 14 years. Mid-range will be about 6 years…

He added:

So we, I’m optimistic that we’ll have it done at the beginning of the year. But in terms of what’s taking so long? I guess they just want to get the language of it right. Because it’s more important to get it right than to rush through it. But we have to do something. Because most of our violence in Chicago is perpetrated by repeat gun offenders

(Editor’s note: Bold added for emphasis)

No doubt “getting the language right” is important. But, there could be another reason why it’s taking so long for this legislation to see the light of day. I was listening to WLS-AM 890 (Chicago) back on September 23 when I caught the following. John Dempsey reported on the radio station’s website that day:

In his speech at Malcolm X college, Emanuel also talked about implementing a three year mentoring program to provide support to over 7,000 at-risk youth in Chicago. The Mayor also called on Illinois lawmakers to toughen penalties for gun crimes, something black lawmakers from Chicago have thwarted in the past, out of concern that harsher gun laws would unfairly target African-Americans.

Eddie Johnson told WLS he is currently talking with those lawmakers about drafting a law that would address the real need the city has to make sure repeat offenders are kept behind bars for longer periods of time. “I think that the legislators are coming around now because before we didn’t have concealed carry and you know the sentencing that I’m looking for is not mandatory. It’s focused at repeat gun offenders so that’s not casting a net over the minority population. It’s more like using a spear to focus on the guys that are consistently telling us they don’t want to play by the rules of society. The way we want it to go is that repeat gun offenders would be sentenced on the mid to high end range of sentencing as opposed to giving them lighter sentences.”

(Editor’s note: Bold added for emphasis)

Meanwhile, almost 78 percent (567 victims) of shooting deaths in Chicago in 2016 have been African-Americans (source: HeyJackass!).

Chicago Shootings Increase On Long Holiday Weekends Year-Over-Year

Unsurprisingly, an awful lot of people were shot in Chicago over the long Thanksgiving weekend. From the HeyJackass! website (“Illustrating Chicago Values”):

Thanksgiving Stupidity…
Final Stupidity Tally: 11 killed, 64 wounded
2015 Thanksgiving weekend: 9 killed, 22 wounded
2014 Thanksgiving weekend: 5 killed, 23 wounded
2013 Thanksgiving weekend: 4 killed, 12 wounded

(Editor’s note: Three “kills” over the 2016 holiday weekend were police-involved shootings)

Notice the spike in shootings from just a year ago? Looking at the HeyJackass! data, I noticed year-over-year increases also took place on other long holiday weekends in Chicago, including Memorial Day (75 shot in 2016, 32 in 2015), July 4th (67 shot in 2016, 66 in 2015), and Labor Day (66 shot in 2016, 56 in 2015).

The trend is not Chicago’s friend here.

Chicago Weekend: 58 Shot, 11 Killed

“This Weekend’s Stupidity…

Final Stupidity Tally: 12 killed, 47 wounded
2015 weekend tally: 4 killed, 20 wounded
2014 weekend tally: 8 killed, 13 wounded…”

-HeyJackass! website Monday afternoon. Please note that one of their “kills” from the past weekend was a police-involved shooting.

The unseasonably warm weather continued in Chicago this past weekend.

As did the lethal shooting gallery.

Megan Crepeau reported on the Chicago Tribune website Monday morning:

For the second weekend in a row, more than 50 people were shot in Chicago as the number of homicides this year rose to more than 50 percent above the same period last year

(Editor’s note: Bold added for emphasis)

“More than 50 percent”

Actually 55 percent, according to the headline of that Tribune piece.

HeyJackass! (“Illustrating Chicago Values”) claims there have been 679 “total homicides” in the city so far this year.

Across town on the website of the Chicago Sun-Times Monday, Fran Spielman noted:

Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s $8.2 billion 2017 budget sailed through a City Council committee Monday along with the $50 million revenue package needed to help pay for it and the mayor’s promised police hiring surge

In fact, the biggest question surrounding the annual spending plan is whether the mayor can deliver on his ambitious promise to hire 970 additional police officers over the next two years

(Editor’s note: Bold added for emphasis)

“970 additional police officers over the next two years”

Some might refrain from referring to these prospective new hires as “additional police officers” once retirements and necessary promotions among existing Chicago Police Department personnel are factored in.

Still, I suspect each new body helps and they couldn’t come online soon enough, as the CPD still suffers from a well-publicized manpower shortage (first blogged about here) while combatting an epidemic of gun-related violence not seen in the “Windy City” in years.
