Cook County Tells Rest Of Illinois: Enact More Gun Control

Last Thursday, I blogged about a gun “control” referendum that was to appear on Cook County (Illinois) voter ballots on November 4. It said:

Shall the Illinois General Assembly enact the Illinois Public Safety Act (Senate Bill 3659) which would require universal background checks for firearm transfers and prohibit the sale and transfer of assault weapons, assault weapon attachments and high capacity ammunition magazines?

As of an hour ago, with 3,690 of 3,742 precincts reporting, the results so far show:

“Yes”: 1,024,722 votes (86.6%)

“No”: 159,028 votes (13.4%)

So there you have it. Cook County voters have spoken, and they overwhelmingly want more gun “control” for the entire state.

Too bad the referendum is non-binding. And it’s not like the rest of the “Land of Lincoln” gives a crap what “Crook County” thinks.

Still, I suspect Governor Quinn might bring it into play the next time a mass shooting or terrorist attack on American soil with a significant number of casualties occurs.

Oh, that’s right.

He gone.

Oak Park And Cook County Referenda For More Gun ‘Control’ In Illinois, U.S.

Here’s the latest from “ground zero” for gun “control” in the United States. Voters in Cook County and Oak Park (Cook County, Illinois) will have the opportunity to vote on the following referenda in next week’s election. For Cook County voters:

Shall the Illinois General Assembly enact the Illinois Public Safety Act (Senate Bill 3659) which would require universal background checks for firearm transfers and prohibit the sale and transfer of assault weapons, assault weapon attachments and high capacity ammunition magazines?

And for Oak Park Township voters:

Shall the Federal Government enact legislation requiring universal background checks of criminal and mental health history records for all transfers of ownership or possession of firearms, including transfers which occur at gun shows, over the internet and privately, as a step toward preventing the ownership or possession of firearms by criminals and those with serious mental illnesses, and as a step toward preventing gun trafficking altogether?

Regarding that Cook County referendum- I understand its primary purpose (along with other referenda appearing on the November 4 ballot) is to energize Democrats to vote in this mid-term election.

As for that Oak Park referendum- Your guess is as good as mine. I’m going to go with making a statement, seeing that both referenda are non-binding.

I will say this though. After the next mass shooting or terrorist attack on American soil with a significant number of casualties, expect the results of both (should voters “approve” them) to be trotted out by various politicians pushing more gun “control.”

Illinois Governor Pushes Ban On ‘Assault Weapons,’ ‘High-Capacity’ Ammo Magazines

As Democratic lawmakers can’t figure out why shootings and murders have erupted with renewed vigor in Chicago this summer (hints: bare-bones Chicago Police Department, gun-related laws already on the books but not enforced, and shooters not going to jail or for too short a stint), they’ve resorted to pushing more gun “control” laws on law-abiding constituents who have had nothing to do with the outbreak in violence. From a press release on the Illinois Government News Network website Sunday:

Governor Quinn Fights for Stronger Gun Laws Across Illinois
Congresswoman Kelly Joins Governor to Urge General Assembly to Pass Illinois Public Safety Act and Take a Stand Against the Violence

CHICAGO – Governor Pat Quinn, joined by Congresswoman Robin Kelly, today visited the site a recent fatal shooting in Chicago’s Morgan Park neighborhood to urge legislators to stand with families and communities and take action against gun violence. The Governor pushed passage of the Illinois Public Safety Act, legislation that would ban the sale or delivery of assault weapons and high capacity ammunition magazines in Illinois and require background checks for the transfer of guns. Today’s action is part of Governor Quinn’s agenda to make Illinois neighborhoods safer.

“The recent epidemic of violence in Chicago is unacceptable and we must join together to fight back,” Governor Quinn said. “Public safety is government’s foremost mission and Illinois should not wait any longer to act. There are too many victims of a war being waged on our streets, a war fueled in part by the availability of deadly, military-style assault weapons that have no purpose other than killing.

“We must work together to protect the lives of those we love and stop what’s happening in our communities. I urge the Illinois General Assembly to take a stand and pass this legislation that will save lives and protect communities.”

The Governor today was joined by Congresswoman Robin Kelly who recently released the Kelly Report on Gun Violence in America, the first-ever Congressional analysis of the nation’s gun violence epidemic that offers a blueprint for ending the crisis.

Senate Bill 3659 – the Illinois Public Safety Act – was introduced during the recent spring Legislative session by State Senator Dan Kotowski (D-Park Ridge) and supported by Governor Quinn. It bans the possession, delivery, sale and purchase of assault weapons, large capacity ammunition feeding devices such as magazines or clips, and .50 caliber rifles and cartridges in Illinois. Valid Firearms Owners Identification Card (FOID) holders who possess any of these devices at the time the law is enacted would be allowed to keep them, but could not transfer or sell them except to a family member. The legislation also requires background checks for the transfer of firearms except to a family member or at a gun show…

(Editor’s note: Bold added for emphasis)

Of course, the bad guys won’t obey what’s stipulated in the Illinois Public Safety Act if it becomes law. But here’s what’s really messed-up about the bans the Democrats are pushing.

According to Federal Bureau of Investigation statistics, so-called “assault weapons” and .50 caliber rifles are rarely used in crimes- particularly murders- around the state of Illinois.

From Table 20, “Murder by State, Types of Weapons, 2012” on the FBI’s “Crime in the U.S. 2012” web page (last year I could find pertinent data available for):

Illinois (“limited supplemental homicide data were received”)
Total murders (“Total number of murders for which supplemental homicide data were received”): 509
Total firearms: 439
• Handguns: 429
• Rifles: 4
• Shotguns: 2
• Firearms (type unknown): 4

439 firearm-related murders in Illinois in 2012. With a rifle (type unknown) definitely used in only 4 of those homicides.

Ban “assault weapons” and .50 caliber rifles. Yeah, that will solve the rampant violence.

Something tells me these Democratic politicians are trying to dupe voters into thinking they can end the ongoing carnage in this election year with such legislation.

Not going to happen, as the so-called Illinois Public Safety Act doesn’t even come close to getting to the root of the problem.

See “hints” above.

You can read that entire press release on the IGNN website here. And that 2012 FBI report table here.

Quote For The Week

What I found ironic about this, tragically ironic, is that teddy bears face more stringent regulations than guns do in our country. Teddy bears are tested for sharp edges, points, loose parts and flammability. And you know the number of children who were killed by teddy bears in our country last year?

-Illinois State Senator Dan Kotowski (D-Park Ridge), while meeting with a number of Newtown parents in downtown Chicago Sunday as they joined Chicago-area Democrats in their push to ban standard-capacity ammunition magazines statewide (Chicago Tribune, May 19, 2013)

By the way, according to the Child Injury Lawyer Network website:

Teddy bears and other toys account for twenty two deaths each year, and nearly one hundred and fifty thousand injuries. Most of these deaths and injuries happen to children.

(Editor’s note: Italics added for emphasis)

In Chicago, there’s only been a total of 37 homicides involving rifles- “assault rifles” included- over 9 years, from 2003 to 2011 (Source: Chicago Police Department).

Newtown Parents Join Chicago-Area Democrats In Push To Ban Standard-Capacity Ammunition Magazines

“Just wait for next week. 10 round mag limit bills and semi-auto ban bills may surface next week. They will pull out all the stops to distract us from the fight on CCW. I wouldn’t be surprised that they USE the traumatized parents of Connecticut to push their agenda.

Its sad that the traumatized Connecticut parents have to be used to take away our rights to defend our children from a similar fate.”

-Anonymous comment, Second City Cop blog, May 18, 2013

On Sunday, May 19, it was announced that some parents of children who were victims of the shooting that took place at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, last December were due to arrive in Chicago as area Democrats push for a ban on standard-capacity ammunition magazines. From the WGN Chicago website yesterday:

Governor Pat Quinn will meet with parents of the Newtown, Connecticut school shooting victims today at the Thompson Center.

They are working together to urge Illinois lawmakers to ban the sale of high-capacity ammunition magazines.

(Editor’s note: Going forward, high-capacity ammunition magazines will be defined as having more capacity than what is generally run in that firearm- 40-round magazine in a Kalashnikov, for example- and standard-capacity magazines are having the typical capacity that is run in the firearm- 30-round magazine in an AK or AR, or 20-rounder in an M1A, for example).

Gregory Pratt added on the Chicago Tribune website last night:

Quinn, Senate President John Cullerton, D-Chicago, and Sen. Dan Kotowski, D-Park Ridge, joined the parents in calling on state legislators to pass the bill banning the delivery and sale of ammunition magazines that contain more than 10 rounds.

Under that legislation, introduced Friday by Kotowski, the sale or delivery of these magazines would be punishable by a maximum of three years in prison. It would also make the use of a high-capacity magazine during a crime an aggravating factor leading to a stiffer penalty, Kotowski said.

The legislation being referred to here is Senate Bill 1002, “Amends the Criminal Code of 2012. Makes a technical change in a Section concerning the short title.”

Should this gun “control” legislation be enacted:

A person who knowingly delivers, sells, or transfers, or causes to be delivered, sold, or transferred… a large capacity ammunition feeding device capable of holding more than 10 rounds but not more than 17 rounds of ammunition commits a Class 4 felony for a first violation and a Class 3 felony for a second or subsequent violation.

(Editor’s note: Italics added for emphasis)

And if it’s a 20- or 30-round standard-capacity ammunition magazine that’s involved:

A person who knowingly delivers, sells, or transfers, or causes to be delivered, sold, or transferred… a large capacity ammunition feeding device capable of holding more than 17 rounds commits a Class 3 felony for a first violation and a Class 2 felony for a second or subsequent violation.

(Editor’s note: Italics added for emphasis)

If this legislation sounds familiar to Survival And Prosperity readers, that’s because I blogged about it on May 10, when State Senator Antonio Muñoz (D-Chicago) was still the chief sponsor, not Kotowski from the suburbs.

Illinois House To Vote On Gun ‘Control’ Amendments Tuesday

While Colorado will be getting the lion’s share of attention today concerning gun “control,” Democrats in the Illinois House of Representatives, led by speaker Michael Madigan, will push Tuesday for more restrictions on firearms here in the “Land of Lincoln.” From the National Rifle Association Institute for Legislative Action website last night:

Illinois: Anti-Gun Politicians Continue Attempts to Ram Gun Control Scheme Through State House

A Vote is Imminent – Contact your state Representative NOW!

As previously reported by the NRA-ILA, House Speaker Mike Madigan continues to force votes on dozens of amendments filed on shell bills in an effort to build his own omnibus gun control bill. Due to Madigan’s trickery and forceful behavior, votes on these amendments have been too close for comfort. House Bills 1155 and 1156 are some of the bills being used as vehicles, and have recently had extreme anti-gun amendments filed on them.

At this time, the list of amendments to these two bills is growing by the minute and contains everything from forcing gun owners to buy $1 million liability insurance and imposing severe restrictions on future Right-to-Carry laws by mandating location restrictions and multiple licenses, to bans on commonly owned semi-automatic firearms and standard capacity magazines. You can view amendments added to HB1156 here and amendments to HB1155 here.

Among others, Amendment 12 to HB 1156 was just filed and would make it unlawful for anyone in Illinois to possess a magazine capable of accepting – and any magazine that could be converted to accept – more than ten rounds. This would effectively ban ALL commonly owned magazines. This issue was defeated last week by only a narrow margin – so it is important that your state Representative understand that a YES vote on Amendment 12 is an unacceptable violation of your rights!

Time is of the essence: These anti-gun amendments will be voted on in the state House TOMORROW and anti-gun politicians are turning up the heat to get your state Representative to vote against your Second Amendment rights in Springfield. Urge your state Representative to stand strong in the face of these deceptive tactics and vote to protect YOUR Second Amendment rights! The House floor votes are close, so every call AND e-mail to your state Representative will make a difference.

Remind your state Representative that he or she represents you! Call AND e-mail them NOW. Don’t let them get away with punishing law-abiding citizens for the acts of criminals!

Illinois House Democrats Approve Bill Amendments Banning ‘Assault Weapons’ And ‘High-Capacity’ Magazines

Democrats in the Illinois House of Representatives are pushing forward to ban “assault weapons” and “high-capacity” ammunition magazines. From the Associated Press last night:

The Illinois House on Tuesday voted in favor of bans on semi-automatic assault weapons and large-capacity ammunition magazines, though the proposals still face several legislative battles before they could become law.

The approved proposals were six amendments to a bill that House Speaker Michael Madigan left blank on purpose, and they were okayed in an unusual process that Madigan began using last week to allow legislators to debate at length on contentious topics. The House still must approve the full piece of legislation for it to move to the Senate, and none of the six votes taken Tuesday as lawmakers debated what would go into the measure had the same support as what is required for a bill to pass the House.

Republican legislators in the Illinois House refused to cast votes.

Gun rights supporters in the “Land of Lincoln” remain hopeful that the gun “control” legislation will fail. Zach Buchheit reported on the Chicago Sun-Times website last night:

While members voted to add the measures to an overall bill, the closest any vote came to meeting the minimum 60 votes needed for a bill to pass in the House was still two votes shy. The legislation cannot become law until the House passes the entire adopted piece of legislation, which is sponsored by House Speaker Michael Madigan (D-Chicago).

This is “Madiganistan.” Something tells me the powerful House Speaker might get the required votes to pass the larger bill. And remember, after last November’s elections Democrats now have a super-majority in both chambers of the Illinois General Assembly, as well as a pro-gun “control” governor in Pat Quinn.

If you’re an Illinois resident whose representative to the Illinois House is a Democrat but has been pro-gun rights up to now, now is a great time to contact them and remind that legislator just how important this issue and legislation is to you.

Because something tells me this might be your last chance as it concerns being able to legally own/possess military-pattern semi-automatic rifles and standard-capacity ammunition magazines within the state of Illinois.

Massad Ayoob, Rob Pincus Defend Semi-Auto, Military-Pattern Rifles And “High-Capacity” Magazines

How many readers have heard this uttered during the latest push for more gun “control” in America?:

Americans don’t need “fast-firing” guns with “high-capacity” magazines to protect themselves. Stopping a bad guy doesn’t require all those bullets.

Such dribble often reveals two things:

1. The individual saying this watches way too much television and/or movies.

2. That person fails to comprehend that sometimes there’s more than one aggressor involved.

This last point has been made exceedingly-clear to me these past couple of years in my observations of crime “south of the border.”

Any readers remember my July 2011 post about a gang of criminals carrying out a violent home invasion against an American couple residing in Ixtapa, Mexico? Pretty graphic story, huh?

And then there’s Fernando Aguirre of Surviving In Argentina blog-fame, who has mentioned multiple incidents involving more than one aggressor in his home country of Argentina. One story in particular stands out in my mind. From his survival-themed book The Modern Survival Manual: Surviving The Economic Collapse:

I also remember a forensic doctor that used to live in my neighborhood, who got ambushed by five or six men when he exited a restaurant. They did kill him, but he managed to kill four of them and he severely wounded another.

This doctor used to practice with his Glock .40 S&W at my local shooting range. I don’t remember exactly how many rounds he fired during the attack, but I remember that it at least doubled the capacity of most revolvers.

“Home Invaders Shot in Self Defense”
(Security cameras catch armed Tucson resident thwarting home invasion)
YouTube Video

Recently, two well-known firearm and personal defense experts- Massad Ayoob and Rob Pincus- have come out in support of semi-automatic military-pattern rifles and so-called “high-capacity” ammunition magazines. Here are some comments from them in their defense of the guns and magazines which others are so desperately trying to ban/take away:

I can certainly imagine scenarios where I would need to have a lot of rounds. I can certainly imagine scenarios where I would need to have the capability of controlling those rounds through a semi-automatic rifle where I can fire those rounds quickly and accurately. Multiple person home invasions would be an easy example that could obviously happen to any home in any part of the country.

-Rob Pincus of I.C.E. Training, in an interview published on the WND.com website on February 27, 2013

In a world where the Good People With Guns often have to deliver several hits to neutralize even one Bad Person With Deadly Weapons, and in which there is often more than one attacker, anyone applying logical thinking can only end up shouting one three-word mantra:

DO THE MATH!!

-Massad Ayoob of Massad Ayoob Group, in a January 31, 2013, post on the Massad Ayoob on Guns blog on the website of Backwoods Home magazine

The cops are the experts on the current criminal trends. If they have determined that a “high capacity” semiautomatic pistol and a .223 semiautomatic rifle with 30-round magazines are the best firearms for them to use to protect people like me and my family, they are obviously the best things for us to use to protect ourselves and our families.

-Massad Ayoob again, in a December 29, 2012, post on the Massad Ayoob on Guns blog

When it comes to firearms and self-defense, these guys know what they’re talking about.

More so than others who would have you “just fire the shotgun through the door” in an ill-advised attempt at protecting the home.

Joe Biden, Meet Celia Bigelow And Her AR-15

Back on January 28, I was taking a break from blogging to do some laundry when I turned on Varney & Co. on the FOX Business Network. Celia Bigelow, the Director of Campus Action at the national conservative organization American Majority Action, was a guest on the show that day. Host Stuart Varney introduced this leader in the conservative youth movement in America as followed:

Senator Dianne Feinstein wants to ban assault “weapons” like the AR-15. But our next guest disagrees. She says that pepper spray, Mace, or a 5-round handheld are not going to cut it anymore when it comes to women protecting themselves.

She wants an AR-15 assault rifle with a 30-round magazine to defend herself.

Ms. Bigelow went on to tell FOX Business Network viewers:

These guns are lightweight. They are really accurate- I can shoot these guns far more accurately than I can with a handgun or a shotgun. And these 30-round magazines essentially serve as an insurance mechanism because if multiple intruders, especially armed intruders, are entering my home, I don’t want to have to take the time to reload to get the job done.

Earlier today, I noted that Vice President Joe Biden told readers of Parents magazine yesterday:

You don’t need an AR-15. It’s harder to aim, it’s harder to use, and, in fact, you don’t need 30 rounds to protect yourself.

Joe Biden: ‘You Don’t Need An AR-15’ For Self-Defense, Buy A Shotgun Instead

Yesterday, Vice President Joe Biden sat down with Parents magazine to answer questions from Facebook users. A number of the questions were related to the ongoing push for more gun “control” by the White House and Democrats. One response in particular is getting a lot of attention today:

KATE: Do you believe that banning certain weapons and “high-capacity” magazines will mean that law-abiding citizens will be more of a target to criminals as we will have no way to sufficiently protect ourselves?
VP BIDEN: Kate, if you want to protect yourself get a double-barrel shotgun, have the shells at 12-gauge shotgun, and I promise you- as I told my wife- we live in an area that’s wooded and somewhat secluded. I said Jill, if there’s ever a problem, just walk out on the balcony here, walk out, put that doubled-barrel shotgun, and fire two blasts outside the house. I promise you whosever coming is not- you don’t need an AR-15. It’s harder to aim, it’s harder to use, and, in fact, you don’t need 30 rounds to protect yourself. Buy a shotgun. Buy a shotgun.

A lot of Americans might give serious consideration to what the Vice President had to say- if it weren’t for the fact that Biden and his family are protected by the United States Secret Service round-the-clock.

Here’s hoping “Capri” (Mrs. Biden’s Secret Service code name, according to freely-available Internet sources) doesn’t hit one of those agents on the Biden’s property should she ever light off that shotgun.

John Wesley, Rawles On Latest Gun ‘Control’ Push

While I don’t think there is a single “face” to the Prepper Movement, a number of individuals are closely-identified with modern survivalism. One of these is James Wesley, Rawles of SurvivalBlog.com-fame. Rawles, a former U.S. Army intelligence officer and author of a number of survival-related works including Patriots: Surviving the Coming Collapseicon and How to Survive the End of the World as We Know It: Tactics, Techniques, and Technologies for Uncertain Timesicon, had this to say on his blog yesterday regarding the latest push for gun “control” in the aftermath of the Newtown, Connecticut, shootings:

Now that BHO has trotted out the kiddies to pull America’s heart strings, it is a good time to again contact your elected representatives, and insist that they draw the line in the sand on semi-auto rifles and full capacity magazines. Modern battle rifles are our rightful militia weapons, and without full capacity magazines we’d be at a disadvantage when going up against foreign invaders or domestic despots. The Second Amendment is not negotiable.

“The Second Amendment is not negotiable.”

Obama Gun ‘Control’ To Extend Beyond Gun, Ammunition Magazine Bans?

This should keep the panic buying going for a while longer with anything firearms-related. Philip Rucker reported on the Washington Post website this Saturday:

The White House is weighing a far broader and more comprehensive approach to curbing the nation’s gun violence than simply reinstating an expired ban on assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition, according to multiple people involved in the administration’s discussions.

A working group led by Vice President Biden is seriously considering measures backed by key law enforcement leaders that would require universal background checks for firearm buyers, track the movement and sale of weapons through a national database, strengthen mental health checks, and stiffen penalties for carrying guns near schools or giving them to minors, the sources said.

To sell such changes, the White House is developing strategies to work around the National Rifle Association that one source said could include rallying support from Wal-Mart and other gun retailers for measures that would benefit their businesses. White House aides have also been in regular contact with advisers to New York Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg (I), an outspoken gun-control advocate who could emerge as a powerful surrogate for the Obama administration’s agenda.

The Biden group, formed last month after the massacre at a Newtown, Conn., elementary school that killed 20 children and six adults, plans to submit a package of recommendations to President Obama this month. Once Obama’s proposals are set, he plans to lead a public-relations offensive to generate popular support.

(Editor’s note: Italics added for emphasis)

Well, as I blogged earlier today, Chicago Democrats tried pushing “far broader and more comprehensive” gun “control” on Illinois residents twice in the last couple of days. And failed. This in a state where “The Machine” is incredibly-influential in state politics and even got their man- Pat Quinn- elected governor in 2010 despite him winning only 4 out of 102 counties in the state. I’m sure the Chicago Democrats currently wielding power in the nation’s capital are fully-aware of the gun “control” debacle in their “home” state by now. In light of these latest developments, it will be interesting to see what exactly the “Biden group” ends up proposing.

One more thing. Regarding what Rucker said about the White House “developing strategies to work around the National Rifle Association that one source said could include rallying support from Wal-Mart and other gun retailers for measures that would benefit their businesses.” I have a feeling retailers who are caught “playing ball” with the gun “control” crowd will be punished by many in the firearm community. These days, I routinely encounter comments from visitors on gun-related websites, blogs, and forums declaring that they will no longer be buying anything from Dick’s Sporting Goods and Cheaper Than Dirt after the two retailers suspended sales of firearms in the days after the Newtown, Connecticut-shootings. Other retailers possibly considering such an alliance with the Obama White House on gun “control” will almost certainly be watching to see how these decisions made by Dick’s and Cheaper Than Dirt pan out for them.

Gun Rights 2, Gun ‘Control’ 0 In Illinois

Gun “control” legislation has been shot down again in the “Land of Lincoln.”

Kurt Erickson reported this morning on The Southern Illinoisan (Carbondale, Illinois) website:

A push to ban semi-automatic weapons in Illinois fizzled again Sunday.

Two days after the Illinois Senate failed to act on a ban, the sponsor of a similar proposal in the House announced he would not be calling the controversial measure for a vote in the waning days of the legislative session.

State Rep. Edward Acevedo, D-Chicago, said he will instead re-introduce the measure this spring…

Meeting in a rare Sunday session as the clock ticks down on the current General Assembly, the possibility of a vote on legislation that would have limited what kinds of weapons could be owned by Illinoisans brought a number of gun rights activists to the Statehouse.

When the decision was announced that supporters would not proceed with the legislation, opponents gathered in a House committee hearing room and cheered and chanted in favor of the Second Amendment.

“They clearly don’t have the votes for this bill,” said Todd Vandermyde, who represents the National Rifle Association.

Vandermyde said a furious lobbying effort kept the gun control supporters from “sneaking” the bill through during the lame-duck session, which ends at noon Wednesday when a new General Assembly is sworn in.

And from the Journal Star (Peoria, Illinois) website last night:

A House judiciary committee on Sunday was scheduled to vote on limiting assault weapons. But state Rep. Elaine Nekritz, D-Northbrook, the committee’s chairwoman, announced at the start of the meeting the vote was called off…

“The House feels that if the votes aren’t there to pass something between now and late Tuesday in one of the chambers, then there’s no reason for us to act on that as well,” Nekritz said.

As it stands right now in Illinois, gun rights 2, gun “control” 0.

I suspect additional statements in support of more gun “control” in Illinois could be coming from Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Governor Pat Quinn after this latest setback.

Illinois Democrats Now Attempting To Ban, Register Guns And Magazines In State House Of Representatives

No doubt about it- the fight for the preservation of gun rights will be an ongoing one. Especially here in Illinois. From the National Rifle Association Institute for Legislative Action website today:

Anti-Gunners Seek to Exploit Tragedy to Advance their Anti-Freedom Agenda to Ban and Register Guns and Magazines – Contact your state Representative TODAY

Yesterday when Senate President John Cullerton was unable to garner thirty votes in the Illinois Senate to pass legislation banning firearms and magazines, he postponed the floor votes on these bills until next week. Now Governor Patrick Quinn and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel have shifted their anti-gun focus to the state House of Representatives in an attempt to ban your guns and magazines during the Lame Duck session on Sunday through Tuesday.

As a way of distracting attention from his failure to control and reduce out-of-control violent crime in Chicago, Emanuel is once again actively seeking to restrict your Second Amendment rights. Emanuel is infamous for saying “You never want a serious crisis to go to waste. And what I mean by that is an opportunity to do things you think you could not do before.” Convenience should never be used as a factor. No time should ever be considered a good time to attack the law-abiding public and strip it of its rights and civil liberties. As previously reported here, the Illinois Senate recently attempted and continues to try to pass two extreme anti-gun bills which, if enacted, will ban, tax and require registration for semi-automatic firearms or detachable magazines, impose severe restrictions on shooting ranges and create a myriad of new laws that will easily turn an entire class of law-abiding citizens into felons. After their efforts stalled yesterday in the Illinois Senate, thanks to your efforts to call and e-mail your state Senators, it appears that Emanuel and Quinn are still hell-bent on exploiting recent tragedies to achieve their goal of making YOU a felon by shifting their anti-gun focus to the state House. So they are now looking to introduce similar gun and magazine ban registration language in the House when it convenes on Sunday for the last few days of their lame duck session.

Representative Edward Acevedo just filed an amendment to Senate Bill 2899 which would accomplish this. This bill is currently scheduled to be heard by the House Judiciary I – Civil Law Committee on Sunday afternoon and will be considered by the full House soon after. It is critical that you call your state Representative TODAY and respectfully demand that he or she oppose any and all anti-gun initiatives, especially Senate Bill 2899, and stand up for your rights!

While details are still emerging as to the particulars of this legislation, one thing is for certain: Anti-gun politicians are attempting to sacrifice your constitutional rights as a scapegoat for the criminal acts of violence in Chicago by gangs and drug dealers. While it might be convenient right now, it is irresponsible for these anti-gun politicians to launch an attack on your rights as a consolation prize just because they lost in their attempts to flout the Constitution and deny Illinois citizens their right to keep and bear arms.

They may not have not achieved success in courts or in the Senate thus far, but they are still determined to go after your rights. Don’t let them succeed in banning your firearms or magazines as an excuse for stopping criminals and lunatics from misusing them. Criminals — by definition — violate laws, especially gun control laws, including often: murder, rape, robbery, drug-dealing, gang violence, firearm theft, carrying concealed firearms without a license/permit, federal gun-free school zones. They do not obey gun bans, register their firearms, or get subjected to any gun control schemes (like the lone state ban on carrying concealed firearms for self-defense) that only affect and penalize law-abiding citizens like you. Your telephone calls TODAY to your state Representatives will determine the outcome of this very serious assault on your Second Amendment rights.

The NRA-ILA will continue to send legislative updates as details become available. However, it is of the utmost importance that you act NOW to stop this gun and magazine ban. Call your state Representative IMMEDIATELY and respectfully express your opposition to banning firearms or magazines, and urge them to vote against any and all measures that do so, particularly Senate Bill 2899.
