Chicago Thanksgiving Holiday Shootings Leave 8 Dead, At Least 20 Others Wounded

The long holiday weekend was a bloody one for Chicago. It was reported on the Fox 32 (Chicago) website Monday morning that 8 people were killed and at least 20 others wounded in shootings across the city. According to the HeyJackass! website this afternoon, the “Windy City” has tallied 2,750 shootings and 464 homicides year-to-date. Yikes.

‘Magnificent Mile’ Retailers Say Protest On Black Friday Resulted In Sales ‘25 Percent To 50 Percent Below Projections’

Kim Janssen reported on the Chicago Tribune website Monday afternoon:

Activists who blocked the entrances to stores on North Michigan Avenue on Black Friday to protest the fatal shooting of a black teenager by a white Chicago cop may have split opinions with their tactics.

But their goal of forcing retailers to suffer economic pain on what’s historically the busiest shopping day of the year was a success, according to unhappy store staff and managers who said Monday that Black Friday sales on the Magnificent Mile were 25 percent to 50 percent below projections

(Editor’s note: Bold added for emphasis)

As if the city of Chicago needed more financial misery heaped on it these days.

Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy Fired

“I’ve never quit on anything in my life. I’m 56 years old. Don’t expect that to change… The mayor has made it very clear that he has my back…”

While I wasn’t a fan of Superintendent McCarthy, I do thank him for his several years of public service on behalf of the residents of Chicago.

Illinois State Rifle Association Issues ‘Urgent Alert’ On Prepping For Terrorism

While I haven’t been following the activities of the Illinois State Rifle Association for long, I don’t think I’ve ever seen them this worked up about such an issue. From a November 14 Facebook post:

URGENT ALERT –
DO NOT PUT YOUR FAMILY SECURITY ON THE BACK BURNER
EVENTS IN PARIS ARE JUST A WARM UP EXERCISE
YOU MUST ARM AND TRAIN YOUR FAMILY TO ENSURE SURVIVAL

People around the world were treated today to a brutal spectacle having its roots in political naivety, ignorance of history, and wholly misguided immigration policy. Does that sound familiar? It should, because it aptly describes not only to the French government, but the sitting U.S. administration as well.

If you are of the mind of, “…it can’t happen here” then you are sorely deluded. The apparatus to launch a Paris-style bloodbath is already in place here in the United States. All these determined terrorists are waiting for is the go-head from their higher headquarters.

We may be only hours or even moments away from the news that dozens if not hundreds of Americans – just like you and your family – are laying dead or dying in a heap on the floor of some sporting, shopping or entertainment venue. We may be only hours or even moments away from hearing about how the police are looking for “…a few extremists” responsible from the carnage.

It’s not a question as to whether this is going to happen here, because it will. The real question is whether you are prepared to stand and protect what is yours. Are you prepared and able to defend yourself and your family? When the inevitable moment of truth arrives, are you willing to stand and fight or will you be content to play dead – hoping desperately that it is not your day to die?

The survival of you and your family is not mere fodder for some analysis of the war on terror – it’s a cultural imperative. As an American, you are very fortunate that you have a formula for survival and it’s called the Second Amendment. However, the power of any right is directly proportional to how vigorously it is exercised. Left unattended, the rights you enjoy under our Second Amendment will wither away.

To better the chances of survival for you and your family, the Illinois State Rifle Association urges you to do the following:

1. Make sure every person in your family holds a FOID card and that all eligible family members hold Illinois concealed carry permits.
2. Assemble a family defense arsenal consisting of one or more semiautomatic rifles such as the AR-15; one or more 12-gauge pump action shotguns, and one or more semiautomatic handguns. If you do not have a family defense arsenal, this is a good weekend to begin putting it together.
3. Be sure that you and every member of your family have had sufficient training in the use and field servicing of the weapons in your family defense arsenal.
4. Be sure that you have sufficient quantities of the proper ammunition on hand to defend your family.
5. Resolve this weekend to get yourself and your family into a physical training regimen. Your physical conditioning may be the difference between life and death during a Paris-style attack.
6. Encourage your extended family and friends to develop plans for protecting self and family from the threat of terror our government takes so lightly.

You have to understand that this is not a battle you can hire someone else to fight for you. When the time comes, you may very well find yourself standing nose to nose with a guy intent upon obliterating you, your culture, and everything you hold sacred.

Are you prepared?

Disturbing. Yet nothing to scoff at, as I too believe it’s only a matter of time before a major terror attack is launched by jihadists against the U.S.

Guns & Ammo Publishes ‘Best States For Gun Owners 2015’

Yesterday I happened to come across an article entitled “Best States for Gun Owners 2015” on the Guns & Ammo website. Keith Wood wrote Tuesday:

For the third consecutive year and first time in print, Guns & Ammo presents our assessment of each state’s gun laws in a format that ranks them from worst to first for gun owners…

G&A has conducted a thorough review of each state’s laws and considered initiatives pending in state legislatures. Every effort has been made to create a ranking system that is fair, equitable, accurate and objective. States were ranked numerically in each of five categories: right-to-carry, right to own “black rifles” (i.e., firearms possessing a tactical appearance), presence of the Castle Doctrine, subjects relating to the National Firearms Act (NFA) and a catchall miscellaneous column…

Interesting. Considering the amount of activity in the state recently as it concerns gun rights, I was real curious to see where Illinois ranked on this list. From the piece:

43. Illinois

Illinois has gone from one of the worst states for gun owners to “not so bad as long as you don’t live in Chicago” these last few years. The state’s “shall issue” concealed carry permit system is up and running for both residents and nonresidents, and the sky did not fall. Illinois’ Firearm Owner’s Identification, or “FOID,” requirement remains in effect for all residents wishing to touch a firearm or ammunition except for those possessed by nonresidents in accordance with state law. Suppressors are not permitted in Illinois, though a bill to change that is currently before the legislature. Short-barreled rifles are not allowed. At the point of sale, there is a three-day waiting period before picking up a handgun, and a 24-hour waiting period is applied to all long guns. The state has strong use-of-force laws, and all tactical rifles are legal outside of municipalities such as Chicago and Highland Park…

To expand on that bit about “all tactical rifles are legal outside of municipalities such as Chicago and Highland Park,” Don Babwin reported on The State Journal-Register (Springfield, Illinois) website back on July 20, 2013:

According to the Illinois State Rifle Association, at least 16 municipalities – including Chicago – enacted ordinances banning or regulating assault weapons. Every one of them was in the Chicago metropolitan area. Around 30 other municipalities took up the issue but voted down the bans.

The list of towns that took action includes places such as Evanston, Highland Park, Hazel Crest and Calumet Park…

So that’s Illinois. How about north of the state line where I pursue the bulk of my outdoor activities (when I have the time, that is)? From the article:

25. Wisconsin

Life improved markedly for gun-owning Wisconsin residents when former Gov. Jim Doyle was replaced by Gov. Scott Walker. Wisconsin’s hard-won CCW law gets good marks for strong reciprocity and very limited “gun-free zones.” The state has a Castle Doctrine statute on the books and doesn’t restrict NFA items or tactical-looking firearms. A bill to repeal the state’s 48-hour waiting period on handgun purchases was recently signed by Gov. Walker, yet another step forward for gun owners. Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke is about as outspokenly pro-gun as it gets, which is a rare thing in a major metro area…

Nearby Indiana, by the way, actually placed 16th in this year’s rankings. Nice job.

Where does your state fall in the 2015 list? Head on over to the Guns & Ammo website here to find out.

Chicago Uber Driver With Concealed-Carry Permit Shoots Man Firing Into Crowd In Logan Square

I’m guessing some members of the anti-concealed-carry crowd in Illinois and beyond aren’t too pleased that news of the following makes its way into the mainstream media. Greg Ziezulewicz reported on the Chicago Tribune website Monday morning:

Authorities say no charges will be filed against an Uber driver who shot and wounded a gunman who opened fire on a crowd of people in Logan Square over the weekend.

The driver had a concealed-carry permit and acted in the defense of himself and others…

Glad to hear this Illinois Concealed Carry License holder was at the right place at the right time.

While I haven’t heard any comment on the incident by City Hall or a high-ranking representative of the Chicago Police Department, I’ll make the following prediction. Undoubtedly, they’ll be a time when an Illinois CCL holder screws up royally. And when that individual does, the anti-CCW crowd will scream bloody murder in an attempt to convince anyone who will listen that legal concealed-carry of a firearm by the citizenry is a huge mistake and should be rescinded. Mark my words.

Illinois State Police Releases Concealed-Carry Statistics For 2014

Following up on last Sunday’s post about Illinois concealed-carry, the other day I found out the Illinois State Police just released a report entitled Concealed Carry Statistics 2014. I got the chance to examine it this morning and pulled the following which may interest Illinois readers of the blog. From January 1, 2014, to December 31, 2014:

• Applications Active By County- 91,651
• Applications Denied By County- 2,359
• Licenses Revoked By County- 175

Concerning applications active by the counties comprising the Chicagoland area:

• Cook County- 23,921
• DuPage- 5,577
• Kane- 2,873
• Lake- 4,252
• McHenry- 2,555
• Will- 6,134

All those Illinois Concealed Carry Licenses. It’s got to be just a matter of time before the streets are running with “rivers of blood,” right?

Sarcasm aside, if (when?) it gets to the point that Illinois concealed-carry permit holders start “perforating” the bad guys with some regularity- no matter how justifiable the shootings were- the anti-gun/gun “control” crowd and their presstitutes will be screaming at the top of their lungs how the “Land of Lincoln” has become the “Wild West.”

As if they would know…

Sunday, January 18th, 2015 Crime, Firearms, Government, Gun Rights, Mainstream Media, Public Safety, Self-Defense Comments Off on Illinois State Police Releases Concealed-Carry Statistics For 2014

Illinois Concealed-Carry Latest

“[Chicago Police Department Superintendent Garry] McCarthy, who has been one of the most vocal critics of the law allowing Illinois residents to carry concealed firearms in public, warned there will be confrontations that could escalate into a deadly shooting- similar to January, when a retired police officer shot and killed a man who had been using his cell phones during the previews at a movie theater; or when a Florida man shot four teens- killing one- during an argument over loud rap music in 2012.

“There are going to be confrontation situations. We’re hearing stories across the country about people getting shot over ‘thug music,’ right? Or somebody throwing popcorn in a movie theater,” he said. “These things are going to come, as sure as we’re standing here.”

He said deadly shootings involving people supposedly acting in self-defense will be seen in Illinois now that residents can carry guns in public.

“Stand by and watch what happens. The answer to gun violence is not more guns,” McCarthy said…”

-CBS2 Chicago website, March 4, 2014

Now that the first year of Illinois concealed-carry has wrapped up, I thought I’d blog a bit about where it stands at the present time.

First things first. No “rivers of blood” from CCW permit holders ran through the streets of the state. And the “Land of Lincoln” did not become the “Wild West.”

So much for that nonsense from the gun “control” crowd. Gives you an idea of how little they view Illinoisans.

Second, Illinois residents have turned out in droves for the new Illinois Concealed Carry License. On January 2 I blogged:

From Illinois State Rifle Association executive director Richard Pearson in his “Director’s Message” for January 2015:

Last week I learned there were over 102,000 concealed carry licenses that had been applied for (we made the 100,000 goal for applications the first year).

(Editor’s note: Bold added for emphasis)

Third, concealed-carry permits are still in high demand- at least in some areas of the state. Craig Choate reported on the WSIL-TV (ABC Southern Illinois) website on January 2:

One year ago, Illinois became the final state in the country to approve concealed weapons. Since then, thousands applied for, and got those permits. Now with Ferguson, Missouri still fresh in people’s minds, applications have spiked again.

Demand for the permits has not slowed down for the 16 hour course that goes with it. Those close to the issue, say demand keeps rising.

Retired state trooper Steve Sweeney says the flood of gun permit applications didn’t surprise him a bit. He teaches the conceal carry course at Wright’s in Pinckneyville, and says crime stories in the news always bring a rush of new students.

“The initial rush, everybody wanted it immediately, then there was a lull and it tapered off, and now it’s back, the phone’s ringing off the wall, things like Ferguson will prompt people to go out and get their training.” said Sweeney.

Gun store owners say every time Illinois issues a new permit, they get a new customer said Hicks Trading Station owner Kevin Hicks, “It’s probably increased the concealed carry styled guns, both semi-automatics and revolvers, probably 40-50 percent over what they would have been without the concealed carry law.”

According to one Illinois media outlet, the number of concealed-carry permits applied for last year actually fell significantly short of what state law enforcement had forecast. From the WAND-TV (NBC Decatur) website on December 30, 2014:

Last year ISP predicted between 300 and 400 thousand people would apply.

As if 102,000 applications were shabby.

That’s it for now. For more information about the Illinois Concealed Carry License visit the Illinois State Police website here.

22 States Now Recognize Illinois Concealed Carry License

After several years of researching and blogging about personal safety topics, I’ve noticed a number of companies selling firearms, ammunition, and other self-defense products refuse to do business with potential customers from Chicago, Cook County, and/or Illinois, even though what they’re selling can be legally-purchased and possessed by residents of those areas. From what I understand, the thinking is:

If you’re going to elect politicians that are anti-gun and anti-personal defense, then we’re not going to sell our products to you until you vote said politicians out of office.

I’ve wondered if a similar train of thought might carry over to their state’s recognition of the new Illinois Concealed Carry License.

The jury’s still out on that one.

But there are a number of states that already do recognize the Illinois concealed-carry permit. And the outlook for more doing so seems positive. Kevin Craver reported on the Northwest Herald (Chicago, Illinois, northwest suburbs) website yesterday:

Since becoming available to the public in January, 22 other states recognize the Illinois permit, meaning it authorizes the holder to carry there. The list includes all of Illinois’ neighboring states, much of the Midwest and portions of the West and South…

The list of states that recognize Illinois’ permit likely will increase as states review their agreements, [Illinois State Rifle Association Executive Director Richard] Pearson said. Gun-friendly Texas, for example, honors permits from most other states but not yet Illinois…

States that honor the Illinois permit besides its immediate neighbors are Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Idaho, Kansas, Michigan, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah and Vermont.

Good to know. Especially for those with Illinois CCLs or interested in acquiring one and looking to carry concealed out of state.

For more information on the Illinois Concealed Carry License, visit the Illinois State Police website here. As I mentioned in a different post last week, much of the processing hiccups and initial backlog look to have been dealt with by the ISP already.

Initial Surge Of Illinois Concealed Carry License Applications Settles Down After 68,000-Plus Issued

Illinois readers- been waiting for that initial surge of Illinois Concealed Carry License applications to subside before applying for the permit yourself? According to Molly Parker over at the The Southern Illinoisan (Carbondale), things are finally startling to settle down. Parker reported yesterday on the paper’s website:

Observers of the new law say the initial rush by enthusiasts, though, is mostly over and the ticklish process for applying for a permit- or which was beset by technological problems- has smoothed out considerably…

Richard Pearson, executive director of the Illinois State Rifle Association, said at first it was a “painful process.”

“By the same token we are making progress and some people got their permits when they gave the police their applications within 35 days,” he said.

Last time I blogged about the number of Illinois CCLs issued (July 2), it stood north of 60,000. Parker noted:

The state issued a total of 68,549 permits statewide between February and July according to state statistics provided by Rep. Brandon Phelps, D-Harrisburg, one of the new law’s chief architects…

And the last time I wrote about the number of concealed-carry permits issued to Cook County residents (May 23), that stood at 12,641. Parker added:

Chicago’s Cook County is home to the most permit holders by number, though the county ranks 96th of 102 counties in percentage of people with a permit compared to the overall county population…

The Southern piece didn’t indicate how many Cook County permit holders there are now. However, according to a related article on the Chicago Sun-Times website this afternoon:

Cook County has the largest number of permit holders (17,477), but that’s only 0.33 percent of all residents…

17,000-plus Cook County residents now licensed to carry concealed firearms… and the streets aren’t running with rivers of blood?

More Than 60,000 Illinois Concealed Carry Licenses Issued

The last time I brought up the number of Concealed Carry Licenses issued in Illinois was back on May 23. I blogged:

Bad guys take note. From the website of the Illinois-based civil rights organization Guns Save Life yesterday:

Illinois 50,000 CCW licenses, by county

TOTAL PAID CCL APPLICATIONS 72,447
TOTAL ACTIVE LICENSES 49,980…

This afternoon, I happened to read a June 30 press release from the Illinois State Police concerning an alternative application option to apply for a CCL now being available for individuals without computer access. In it was the following:

To date, more than 78,000 CCL applications have been submitted and more than 60,000 are active across Illinois.

60,000 Illinois CCLs. Nice.

Only a matter of time now before some deserving criminal makes headlines for being perforated by one of these concealed-carry permit holders.

Niles, Illinois, Concealed-Carry Training Facility Approved

Back on May 8, I blogged about a new concealed-carry training facility possibly opening its doors in Niles, Illinois- around my old stomping grounds on the Northwest Side of Chicago.

Last night, I read it took a giant leap closer to becoming reality.

From Igor Studenkov on the Niles Herald-Spectator website on May 28:

The Niles Village Board has OKed plans for a gun-training center to open in the village, but actual firearms won’t be used at the facility.

The board approved a special use permit Tuesday night that would allow the concealed carry training center to open at 7609 Milwaukee Ave, near the Howard Street intersection.

Marc Jens, a retired Cook County Sheriff’s officer, will be running the school with his wife, Connie. The center will provide the firearms training required for anyone who applies for a concealed carry permit in Illinois…

Jens applied for the permission to open the school in March of last year. He already had the experience in firearms training, teaching at the Cook County Sheriff’s Police Training Academy for ten years. His application was approved unanimously by the Niles Plan Commission earlier in May…

In lieu of actual firearms, I noted in my earlier post about the proposed center that Jens plans on using Shot Indicating Resetting Trigger (SIRT) Training Pistols:

Cook is the county with the most “active” licenses issued to date, with 12,641.

Followed by:

DuPage 3,359
Lake 2,516
Madison 1,726
McHenry 1,589
St. Clair 1,364

I, for one, feel a lot safer knowing these thousands of Illinois Concealed Carry License holders are out there.

And last I checked, there weren’t any rivers of blood flowing through the Chicagoland streets.

At least as it relates to these law-abiding gun owners.
