Jim Rogers Still Buying Asian Stocks While Waiting To Add To His Gold

Well-known investor, author, and financial commentator Jim Rogers was recently interviewed by Kitco News anchor Daniela Cambone. The former investing partner of George Soros in the legendary Quantum Fund talked about a number of topics, including U.S. and foreign stocks, Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, gold, asset bubbles, and how he’s preparing himself for 2018.

On U.S. equities, Rogers said:

I’m not a buyer here, Daniela. Stocks have been going straight up. I don’t like to buy straight up. I would buy Japan, for instance, and China- both of which are down a lot. And if America’s going to continue going up or turn into a bubble, they’re going to go up more.

On U.S. stock prices:

I would expect that they will go up for a while, and then go down by this time next year.

(Editor’s note: Bold added for emphasis)

On gold:

I’m not selling any of my gold. I’m not buying gold. I’m sitting and watching. I’m still waiting for gold to go down so I can buy more.

(Editor’s note: Bold added for emphasis)

For 2018:

I’m still buying shares in Asia. China’s down 40 percent from its all-time high. Japan’s down 50 percent from its all-time high. The Japanese government is doing unbelievably everything it can to get stocks up. It’s not good for Japan what they’re doing, but it’s good for me- it’s good for people like me who own shares. Anyway, I prefer to buy Japan which is down 50 percent to America which is making all-time highs.

Jim Rogers Predicts ‘A Canned Goods Kind Of Time’ In The Next Few Years

In our present discussion of money/investing matters on Survival And Prosperity I’ve already brought up one “crash prophet” this week in Jeremy Grantham. Today, I want to talk about another “prophet”- investor, author, and financial commentator Jim Rogers.

The former investing partner of George Soros in the legendary Quantum Fund is not as optimistic about the U.S. stock market as his British colleague. Rogers sat down with Pete Sweeney, Asia Editor of Reuters BREAKINGVIEWS, and issued the following warning in a November 22 podcast. From their exchange:

REUTERS: You’ve been predicting of late a big market crash to come. Now, as we have markets hitting new highs every minute it seems and people are shorting volatility indexes apparently. I just want to move us forward a little bit. Let’s assume it does happen next year. Let’s assume all this crazy happiness evaporates in a big disaster. What do you think the strategy is for positioning in terms of assets, regions?
ROGERS: Look, let me make sure that we have it clear. What I have said was, that we will have a bear market again some day. Now, Janet Yellen, the head of the Federal Reserve in America, says we won’t. She says everything is okay now and there won’t be anymore economic problems. I happen to disagree with her, and I know we will have bear markets again. And what I said was, the next one we have when it comes is going to be the worst in your life- the worst in my lifetime. And I think I’m older than you. The reason for that being, 2008 we had a problem- too much debt. We had a problem. The next time around debt, is so, so, so much higher Pete. In the last nine years debt has skyrocketed. So the next time we have a bear market, it’s going to be the worst in my lifetime. I wish I were smart enough to know when.
REUTERS: I’m just saying, for a hypothetical, because you’ve been watching these asset markets, because I hear people talking about this a lot. The question is, how do you make money off of it? You’re an investor. So you short everything? Do you buy canned goods, ammo, stuff? What looks attractive to you, assuming that you’re bearish on this?
ROGERS: Well, I’m not short. I bought stocks this week in China, in Japan, Zimbabwe, Taiwan. So I see opportunities on the long side in markets. Doesn’t mean I’m right. The bear market maybe start today. No, but I see opportunities. But if you’re worried about that you do need to learn how to sell short. Great fortunes can be made in a bear market selling short. I’m not sure canned goods is the place yet. No, no, don’t laugh, because we’re going to have some time in the next few years a canned goods kind of time. We’re going to have serious, serious problems in the world. I’m not sure canned goods is for the next bear market. But it’s… don’t forget your canned goods.

The commodities “guru” is still bullish on agriculture, suggesting:

If you’re worried about the world, and we are going to have a serious bear market, you should think about agriculture. Because agriculture will probably do well. That is a place that will probably disconnect, to use your term, in the next bear market.

The Chairman of Rogers Holdings and Beeland Interests, Inc. elaborated on his new acquisitions, telling listeners:

I bought Japanese ETFs, Chinese ETFs, Taiwan ETFs, and Zimbabwe, the comparable of ETFs in Zimbabwe.

Finally, Rogers shared the following as the interview came to a close:

I own Japanese shares. Am I going to make money? I don’t know. But my view is, the Japanese stock market may go back to its all-time highs. And that would be a double if it does…

At the moment, I still see reasons to be optimistic in some markets that are still very depressed compared to the ones going through the roof.

Good interview questions and even better replies from the Singapore-based Rogers. You can listen to the entire 13-minute interview on the Reuters BREAKINGVIEWS website here.

Jim Rogers ‘Still Waiting’ For Gold Buying Opporunity, ‘My Positions Are In Asia’

Daniela Cambone of Kitco News recently spoke to well-known investor, author, and financial commentator Jim Rogers. The former investing partner of George Soros in the legendary Quantum Fund shared the following with Kitco News viewers on April 30:

I’m bullish on the Chinese market, that’s my largest country. My largest stock positions are in Asia- China, Japan, Russia is becoming bigger and bigger. So my positions are in Asia. China is going to have some problems eventually. Looks like a bubble may be developing in its stock market, and if that happens obviously it will pop someday. You’re going to see some more real estate bankruptcies in China. There’s a lot of debt build up-in China. But at the moment I’m still there. I even bought more last week

I’ve mentioned China. I mentioned Japan. Russia- I’ll probably buy more Russia today. If I weren’t talking to you I might be buying Russia right now. These are the sorts of things where I’m looking and am putting more money.

“Gold Buying Opportunity Has Still Not Come – Jim Rogers | Kitco News”
YouTube Video

As Kitco deals in precious metals, it was only natural that the topic of gold came up in the discussion. Singapore-based Rogers had this to say about now being a buying opportunity for the yellow metal:

Well, the opportunity has not come as far as I’m concerned. I’m still waiting.

(Editor’s note: Bold added for emphasis)

The Chairman of Rogers Holding started to say “Sometime in the next year” before offering this up to viewers:

I have no idea. I’m very bad at market timing.

Jim Rogers: Buy China, Japan, Russia, Agriculture

Last Thursday, I talked about a recent interview I listened to of well-known investor Jim Rogers. Robert Williams, the founder of the Baltimore, Maryland-based investment research/market commentary service Wall Street Daily, was asking the questions.

Apparently, I didn’t hear the entire exchange between the two. Williams got the former investing partner of George Soros in the legendary Quantum Fund to share with listeners what stocks he’s buying/intends to buy these days. From the Wall Street Daily website last Friday:

WILLIAMS: Do you have confidence in the U.S. stock market?
ROGERS: Well Bob, the U.S. stock market is making an all-time high. As you know, it’s up more highs this year than any year since 1929. That’s not a bottom. I’d rather buy – I’m buying shares in other markets around the world. I mentioned Russia… China, I bought more Chinese shares yesterday… Japan, I want to buy some more if I get time off the phone to buy more Japanese shares. You know the Chinese and Japanese markets are down 60% from their all-time highs. America’s making all-time highs as it did in 1929. I don’t know if these other markets are better, but I know buying low and selling high often turns out to be right.

(Editor’s note: Bold added for emphasis)

China, Japan, Russia. Check.

And agriculture.

On November 25, Jim Rogers appeared on the Bloomberg Television show Countdown. Host Mark Barton noted the chairman of Rogers Holdings is now an independent director of PhosAgro, Europe’s biggest phosphate fertilizer maker. Rogers shared with viewers:

So I started investing in Russia. I found this company. I’m bullish on agriculture. I’m bullish on these guys. They’re young, smart people. So here I am.

When asked what else he was bullish on in Russia, Rogers said:

I’ve been buying shares of the Moscow Stock Exchange… The easy way is the index, so I bought the ETF, as well. There are various ways to play Russia. Russia’s hated. In my view, wrongly so. And I hope, that all this is going to pass and I’ll make a lot of money.

On China, the Singapore-based investor noted:

I’m buying shares in China… Since the economic plenum of November of 2013- you know the Chinese said, “These are the areas of the economy we’re going to emphasize.” Mark, if the government is going to put a lot of money into those areas, I am too. They’ve got more money than I do. They’re smarter than I am. So I’m investing with them.

When pressed about other areas he was investing in, Rogers pointed out:

The markets that I have been investing in this year- new things- are Japan, Russia, China, agriculture. That’s where I’ve been putting my- those are all depressed markets. Why would you buy the U.S. at an all-time high, when you can buy Japan 60 percent below its all-time high, or China, 60 percent below its all-time high?

He added the following about Japanese Prime Minister Shinzō Abe and “Abenomics”:

He’s going to ruin Japan. But in the next two or three years, I hope he’s going to make me a lot of money. And the investment community. He’s making stocks go up.

Jim Rogers: ‘We’re All Going To Pay A Terrible Price’ When ‘Artificial Ocean Of Liquidity’ Ends

Tonight, I want to talk about well-known investor, author, and financial commentator Jim Rogers. The former investing partner of George Soros- who I recently heard is worth approximately $300 million (Soros $23 billion)- recently shared his thoughts about the global financial system and potential investment opportunities.

On May 27, Nina Xiang of the China Money Network contributed the following on the Forbes website:

Legendary investor Jim Rogers has been warning about “the ocean of artificial liquidity” as a result of the unprecedented money printing by central banks around the world for quite some time now.

But with the U.S. stock market at an all-time high, his cautionary words seem to have hardly been heeded…

“When it ends, we will all pay a terrible price,” says Rogers…

Read it as an advocacy for an alternative attitude that is unpopular at the moment: the attitude of awareness that we are in this “artificial period” and it will end one day; the attitude of fearfulness that there will be more turmoil in the next ten years; the attitude of preparedness, that includes stocking up some extra food, a spare flashlight, and gold coins — instead of gold bars — for when the time of emergency comes…

(Editor’s note: Bold added for emphasis)

“Jim Rogers: We Will All Pay A Terrible Price For Today’s Artificial Liquidity”
YouTube Video

Note that in the Chinese Money Podcast that was uploaded onto YouTube the same day as that Forbes piece, Xiang and Rogers talked about regional conflicts and the Singapore-based investor predicted:

I would suspect that sometime in the next ten years, the world’s going to have a bigger conflict.

On May 26, the text of another interview with Jim Rogers was published on the website of The Economic Times (India). Rogers, who correctly predicted the commodities rally that started in 1999, talked about the following investment opportunities:

• Gold and silver- “If it goes down, I assure you I will be buying more gold and more silver.”
• Crude oil- “Remember, all the other known reserves in the world are in decline, even if the supply from the US is rising. Everywhere else, there has been declining reserves, because there have been no great oilfield discoveries in over 40 years.”
• Sugar- “I am bullish on sugar.”
• U.S. dollar- “I own the US dollar and have not sold any. In fact, probably I would have bought some more, if I weren’t talking to you.”

Rogers concluded this discussion by sharing that:

I am still trying to find some more things to buy in Russia, maybe some Chinese shares and maybe some more Japanese shares…

Nice job by The Economic Times getting this information from Rogers.

Marc Faber Buying Vietnamese Stocks, Considering Chinese, Japanese Shares In The Future

Swiss-born investment adviser/fund manager Marc Faber appeared on
CNBC’s Squawk on the Street last week. “Doctor Doom,” as the financial news media likes to call him, responded to a number of questions from CNBC staff, including where he saw the S&P 500 and Federal Reserve’s bond-buying program going.

The contrarian investor, who became famous for advising clients to get out of the U.S. stock market one week before the October 1987 crash and for predicting the 2008 global financial crisis (among other calls), also talked about where he was putting his own money these days.

Think Asia.

Dr. Faber told viewers:

I’m buying Vietnamese shares. And I’m thinking- I haven’t done it yet- to buy at some point some Chinese shares…

And last fall, last November, I said buy Japan. Since then Japan was up more than 70 percent, and in dollar terms, 35 percent. I want to buy more Japan on a setback.

Jim Rogers Owns, Plans On Buying More Japanese Stocks

It’s not much of a secret that investor, financial commentator, and author Jim Rogers is bullish on Japanese stocks. Back on February 8 he told CNBC viewers:

I own Japanese stocks… Japan is down 75 percent. 75 percent… Japan is going to continue to print money. It’s not good for the world. It’s making markets go up. But in the meantime I’m anticipating. The yen is collapsing in Japan, but the stock market is going through the roof.

(Japan discussion starts at 3:57)
YouTube Video

It’s now March, and the former investing partner of George Soros is still big on Japan. Toshiro Hasegawa and Anna Kitanaka reported on the Bloomberg website this past Monday:

“Japan is one of the few places in the world where I own shares,” Rogers, chairman of Rogers Holdings, said at a Daiwa Securities Group Inc. (8601) equity conference in Tokyo today. “I have no plans to sell and plan to accumulate more when I can. Abe has been a catalyst and this will continue for several years.”

The Singapore-based investor went into more detail about the Japanese equities he owns. Hasegawa and Kitanaka added:

Rogers said he owns shares of Japanese tractor makers on optimism they will be more competitive abroad because of a weaker yen, as well as brokerages.

Regular observers of Rogers, who correctly-called the commodity bull market that started in 1999, know he also likes agriculture as an investment. So his interest in Japanese tractor makers makes sense.
