Joe Biden
Quotes For The Week
A two-fer for you this week:
The affirmative task we have now is to actually create a new world order, because the global order is changing again, and the institutions of the world that worked so well in the post-World War II era for decades, they need to be strengthened, and some need to be changed.
-U.S. Vice President Joe Biden, at last Friday’s annual conference of the Export-Import Bank of the United States
We have never invested as much in public education as we should have, because we’ve always had kind of a private notion of children- your kid is yours and totally your responsibility. We haven’t had a very collective notion of these are our children.
So part of it is we have to break through our kind of private idea that kids belong to their parents, or kids belong to their families, and recognize that kids belong to whole communities.
Once it’s everybody’s responsibility and not just the household’s, then we start making better investments.

Massad Ayoob, Rob Pincus Defend Semi-Auto, Military-Pattern Rifles And “High-Capacity” Magazines
How many readers have heard this uttered during the latest push for more gun “control” in America?:
Americans don’t need “fast-firing” guns with “high-capacity” magazines to protect themselves. Stopping a bad guy doesn’t require all those bullets.
Such dribble often reveals two things:
1. The individual saying this watches way too much television and/or movies.
2. That person fails to comprehend that sometimes there’s more than one aggressor involved.
This last point has been made exceedingly-clear to me these past couple of years in my observations of crime “south of the border.”
Any readers remember my July 2011 post about a gang of criminals carrying out a violent home invasion against an American couple residing in Ixtapa, Mexico? Pretty graphic story, huh?
And then there’s Fernando Aguirre of Surviving In Argentina blog-fame, who has mentioned multiple incidents involving more than one aggressor in his home country of Argentina. One story in particular stands out in my mind. From his survival-themed book The Modern Survival Manual: Surviving The Economic Collapse:
I also remember a forensic doctor that used to live in my neighborhood, who got ambushed by five or six men when he exited a restaurant. They did kill him, but he managed to kill four of them and he severely wounded another.
This doctor used to practice with his Glock .40 S&W at my local shooting range. I don’t remember exactly how many rounds he fired during the attack, but I remember that it at least doubled the capacity of most revolvers.

Recently, two well-known firearm and personal defense experts- Massad Ayoob and Rob Pincus- have come out in support of semi-automatic military-pattern rifles and so-called “high-capacity” ammunition magazines. Here are some comments from them in their defense of the guns and magazines which others are so desperately trying to ban/take away:
I can certainly imagine scenarios where I would need to have a lot of rounds. I can certainly imagine scenarios where I would need to have the capability of controlling those rounds through a semi-automatic rifle where I can fire those rounds quickly and accurately. Multiple person home invasions would be an easy example that could obviously happen to any home in any part of the country.
-Rob Pincus of I.C.E. Training, in an interview published on the WND.com website on February 27, 2013
In a world where the Good People With Guns often have to deliver several hits to neutralize even one Bad Person With Deadly Weapons, and in which there is often more than one attacker, anyone applying logical thinking can only end up shouting one three-word mantra:
DO THE MATH!!
-Massad Ayoob of Massad Ayoob Group, in a January 31, 2013, post on the Massad Ayoob on Guns blog on the website of Backwoods Home magazine
The cops are the experts on the current criminal trends. If they have determined that a “high capacity” semiautomatic pistol and a .223 semiautomatic rifle with 30-round magazines are the best firearms for them to use to protect people like me and my family, they are obviously the best things for us to use to protect ourselves and our families.
-Massad Ayoob again, in a December 29, 2012, post on the Massad Ayoob on Guns blog
When it comes to firearms and self-defense, these guys know what they’re talking about.
More so than others who would have you “just fire the shotgun through the door” in an ill-advised attempt at protecting the home.

VP Biden Says Chicago-Area Democratic Primary Result Sends ‘Clear Unequivocal Signal’ To NRA And Politicians
Before I move away from the topic of firearms and gun rights, U.S. Vice President Joe Biden decided to weigh-in on the victory of pro-gun “control” candidate Robin Kelly in the U.S. Congressional 2nd District (Chicago south suburbs plus more) Democratic primary this past Tuesday. According to Reuters’ Roberta Rampton yesterday, Biden told a group of state attorney generals:
For the first time since Newtown, voters sent a clear unequivocal signal… The voters sent a message last night, not just to the NRA, but to the politicians all around the country. There will be a moral price as well as a political price to be paid for inaction.
I’m going to disagree with the VP here. I’d guess that many observers familiar with “The Chicago Way” interpreted the primary as once again demonstrating that race, gobs of money, and having the blessing of “The Machine” wins elections here in the Chicagoland area. And local politicians screaming about the need for more gun “control” is just one more attempt to distract the masses from the crappy economy and huge financial mess these guys have gotten us into ($9 billion in unpaid bills and a $96 billion pension funding gap in Illinois from what I read yesterday).
By the way, going back to that post I published last week about the Vice President answering gun “control” questions at a Parents magazine event and telling one Facebook user they didn’t need an AR-15 for self-defense, get a shotgun instead…

Joe Biden, Meet Celia Bigelow And Her AR-15
Back on January 28, I was taking a break from blogging to do some laundry when I turned on Varney & Co. on the FOX Business Network. Celia Bigelow, the Director of Campus Action at the national conservative organization American Majority Action, was a guest on the show that day. Host Stuart Varney introduced this leader in the conservative youth movement in America as followed:
Senator Dianne Feinstein wants to ban assault “weapons” like the AR-15. But our next guest disagrees. She says that pepper spray, Mace, or a 5-round handheld are not going to cut it anymore when it comes to women protecting themselves.
She wants an AR-15 assault rifle with a 30-round magazine to defend herself.
Ms. Bigelow went on to tell FOX Business Network viewers:
These guns are lightweight. They are really accurate- I can shoot these guns far more accurately than I can with a handgun or a shotgun. And these 30-round magazines essentially serve as an insurance mechanism because if multiple intruders, especially armed intruders, are entering my home, I don’t want to have to take the time to reload to get the job done.
Earlier today, I noted that Vice President Joe Biden told readers of Parents magazine yesterday:
You don’t need an AR-15. It’s harder to aim, it’s harder to use, and, in fact, you don’t need 30 rounds to protect yourself.

Joe Biden: ‘You Don’t Need An AR-15’ For Self-Defense, Buy A Shotgun Instead
Yesterday, Vice President Joe Biden sat down with Parents magazine to answer questions from Facebook users. A number of the questions were related to the ongoing push for more gun “control” by the White House and Democrats. One response in particular is getting a lot of attention today:
KATE: Do you believe that banning certain weapons and “high-capacity” magazines will mean that law-abiding citizens will be more of a target to criminals as we will have no way to sufficiently protect ourselves?
VP BIDEN: Kate, if you want to protect yourself get a double-barrel shotgun, have the shells at 12-gauge shotgun, and I promise you- as I told my wife- we live in an area that’s wooded and somewhat secluded. I said Jill, if there’s ever a problem, just walk out on the balcony here, walk out, put that doubled-barrel shotgun, and fire two blasts outside the house. I promise you whosever coming is not- you don’t need an AR-15. It’s harder to aim, it’s harder to use, and, in fact, you don’t need 30 rounds to protect yourself. Buy a shotgun. Buy a shotgun.
A lot of Americans might give serious consideration to what the Vice President had to say- if it weren’t for the fact that Biden and his family are protected by the United States Secret Service round-the-clock.
Here’s hoping “Capri” (Mrs. Biden’s Secret Service code name, according to freely-available Internet sources) doesn’t hit one of those agents on the Biden’s property should she ever light off that shotgun.

Signs Of The Time, Part 59
While I admire U.S. Vice President Joe Biden for his long-time service to our country and the passion he’s brought to the various positions he’s held through the years, I was put off by a tyrannical-sounding comment he reportedly made last night while asking House Democrats to keep fighting for gun “control” during their retreat in Lansdowne, Virginia. Kate Nocera wrote on the POLITICO website yesterday:
He told the members attending the retreat that he was unwavering in his belief that the recommendations the task force has put forward are not in violation of the Second Amendment.
“It is clearly within the right of the government to determine what type of weapons can be owned by the public.”
(Editor’s note: Italics added for emphasis)
Unfortunately for the Vice President, the fact is, it is not “clearly within the right of the government to determine what type of weapons can be owned by the public.”
The Second Amendment to the United States Constitution reads:
A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.
First off, there’s that phrase “shall not be infringed.”
Secondly, no mention is made of what types of “Arms” the people could- or could not- “keep and bear.” Handgun, shotgun, rifle. Or for those who like to point out the Founding Fathers had no idea of just how far firearm technology would advance by the 21st century- pistol, blunderbuss, musket, rifle. Not a peep.
“Clearly?” Far from it.

Obama Gun ‘Control’ To Extend Beyond Gun, Ammunition Magazine Bans?
This should keep the panic buying going for a while longer with anything firearms-related. Philip Rucker reported on the Washington Post website this Saturday:
The White House is weighing a far broader and more comprehensive approach to curbing the nation’s gun violence than simply reinstating an expired ban on assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition, according to multiple people involved in the administration’s discussions.
A working group led by Vice President Biden is seriously considering measures backed by key law enforcement leaders that would require universal background checks for firearm buyers, track the movement and sale of weapons through a national database, strengthen mental health checks, and stiffen penalties for carrying guns near schools or giving them to minors, the sources said.
To sell such changes, the White House is developing strategies to work around the National Rifle Association that one source said could include rallying support from Wal-Mart and other gun retailers for measures that would benefit their businesses. White House aides have also been in regular contact with advisers to New York Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg (I), an outspoken gun-control advocate who could emerge as a powerful surrogate for the Obama administration’s agenda.
The Biden group, formed last month after the massacre at a Newtown, Conn., elementary school that killed 20 children and six adults, plans to submit a package of recommendations to President Obama this month. Once Obama’s proposals are set, he plans to lead a public-relations offensive to generate popular support.
(Editor’s note: Italics added for emphasis)
Well, as I blogged earlier today, Chicago Democrats tried pushing “far broader and more comprehensive” gun “control” on Illinois residents twice in the last couple of days. And failed. This in a state where “The Machine” is incredibly-influential in state politics and even got their man- Pat Quinn- elected governor in 2010 despite him winning only 4 out of 102 counties in the state. I’m sure the Chicago Democrats currently wielding power in the nation’s capital are fully-aware of the gun “control” debacle in their “home” state by now. In light of these latest developments, it will be interesting to see what exactly the “Biden group” ends up proposing.
One more thing. Regarding what Rucker said about the White House “developing strategies to work around the National Rifle Association that one source said could include rallying support from Wal-Mart and other gun retailers for measures that would benefit their businesses.” I have a feeling retailers who are caught “playing ball” with the gun “control” crowd will be punished by many in the firearm community. These days, I routinely encounter comments from visitors on gun-related websites, blogs, and forums declaring that they will no longer be buying anything from Dick’s Sporting Goods and Cheaper Than Dirt after the two retailers suspended sales of firearms in the days after the Newtown, Connecticut-shootings. Other retailers possibly considering such an alliance with the Obama White House on gun “control” will almost certainly be watching to see how these decisions made by Dick’s and Cheaper Than Dirt pan out for them.

Vice President Biden Makes ‘Guarantee’ To Boston Mayor Of More Gun ‘Control’ By End Of Month
Yesterday, I heard about a Boston Herald piece in which Boston Mayor Thomas Menino said Vice President Joe “Just Get Out Of The Way” Biden told him President Barack Obama would implement more gun “control” by the end of January. Dave Wedge reported on the Herald website yesterday:
Vice President Joe Biden “guaranteed” Mayor Thomas M. Menino — a leading national gun control advocate — that President Obama will pass sweeping firearms reforms by the end of the month, the mayor said today.
“He said, ‘Tommy, I guarantee you, we’ll get it done by the end of January,’” Menino said at City Hall today. “They’re going to get it done.”
Wedge added later:
Menino added that the president has “no excuse not to pass strong (gun reform) legislation,” since he is in his last term and doesn’t have to worry about angering pro-gun voters or the National Rifle Association.
(Editor’s note: Italics added for emphasis)
The words “more flexibility” come to mind here.
No word as to where Mayor Menino’s armed security detail was at when he shared this information.
Biden, a gun owner, was tasked by President Obama back on December 18 to lead an informal task force on firearm-related violence and set a January deadline for recommendations.
Americans may remember the Boston mayor from a gun “control” TV commercial that appeared during last year’s Super Bowl.
Then again, if you were like me at past Super Bowl parties, maybe you don’t.

U.S. House Voting On ‘High-Capacity’ Ammunition Magazine Ban Friday?
Well that was fast. Patricia Zengerle reported on the Reuters website earlier today:
Democratic legislators said on Wednesday they had seen a groundswell of opposition to the continued sale of high-capacity ammunition magazines and pushed Republicans in the House of Representatives to vote to ban them this week.
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and other Democrats called for a vote on Friday at a news conference announcing a new Gun Control Task Force that was attended by more than two dozen House Democrats.
(Editor’s note: Italics added for emphasis)
This latest proposed firearm-related ban comes as President Obama urged Congress on Wednesday to vote on banning the sale of “assault weapons” and requiring background checks before any firearm sale. Philip Rucker and Scott Wilson reported on the Washington Post website tonight:
The potential gun-control measures, which will be the focus of a working group led by Vice President Biden, mark the most specific proposals to date from Obama to deal with what he called a gun violence epidemic plaguing the United States.
The move pleased gun-control advocates and many Democrats who have been disappointed with Obama’s inaction on the issue during his first term…
Obama told reporters at the White House that he expected the group, which will feature key Cabinet secretaries, to bring him recommendations in January. He said he intends to discuss the issue in his State of the Union address.
(Editor’s note: Italics added for emphasis)
Regarding these “high-capacity” magazines and “Obama’s inaction,” this brings to mind a piece from the same media outlet in which Jason Horowitz reported on April 11, 2011:
On March 30, the 30th anniversary of the assassination attempt on President Ronald Reagan, Jim Brady, who sustained a debilitating head wound in the attack, and his wife, Sarah, came to Capitol Hill to push for a ban on the controversial “large magazines.” Brady, for whom the law requiring background checks on handgun purchasers is named, then met with White House press secretary Jay Carney. During the meeting, President Obama dropped in and, according to Sarah Brady, brought up the issue of gun control, “to fill us in that it was very much on his agenda,” she said.
“I just want you to know that we are working on it,” Brady recalled the president telling them. “We have to go through a few processes, but under the radar.”
Not only are Obama and many of his fellow Democrats now working out in the open these days towards more gun “control” in America. They own this baby now.

Ryan Defeats Biden In U.S. Vice Presidential Debate
Well, I just got done watching the U.S. Vice Presidential debate between Congressman Paul Ryan (R-WI) and sitting Vice President Joe Biden.
Despite the mainstream media trying so hard tonight to portray the debate as an actual contest, it really was anything but.
The Wisconsin Republican won. The Delaware Democrat lost… it.
While the Republican candidate for U.S. President, Mitt Romney, brought his “A” game to the debates last week, I thought Congressman Ryan’s performance was a “B.”
Ryan was composed, articulate, and sounded authoritative with his use of numbers and statistics (the “wonk” in him I hear). Yet, while he got a few jabs in at the Vice President, several windows of opportunity emerged where he could have savaged Biden even more, but didn’t- perhaps in homage to the “respectful” debate performance given by President Barack Obama back on October 3.
In contrast, Vice President Biden came out of the debate looking “unhinged,” as some in the MSM are calling it (they will be corrected, I mean, they will correct this observation later).
To sum up Joe Biden’s night, I saw it like this:
• Faces (lots of them)
• Noises (snorting, huffing, and puffing- watch out or he’ll blow your White House down)
• Interruptions (his constant interrupting of Congressman Ryan was so annoying that I thought I was watching one of those panel-type TV shows where everyone is interrupting and talking above everyone else).
• It’s the Republicans fault (if only they would just “get out of the way”- SNL material there)
• Tax the rich (not sure raising taxes is such an effective strategy when the economy sucks)
• Supposedly big on facts, but brought up “stuff” and ‘things” instead
• Big on fairness (thought moderator owed him more time at the end of the debate)
• More face-making, noise-making, and interrupting
I hate to say it (as I actually like Joe Biden the man from what I know of him), but watching the Vice President reminded me of the Wacky Waving Inflatable Arm Flailing Tube Man on an old episode of Family Guy:
“Wacky Waving Inflatable Arm Flailing Tube Men!”
YouTube Video
Regarding the moderator of the debate- journalist Martha Raddatz- some might argue she appeared to be helping the Vice President by pressing Congressman Ryan more on questions.
Perhaps viewers should have been informed beforehand that not only was President Obama a guest at her wedding, but he also appointed her ex-spouse to chair the Federal Communications Commission.
Inquiring minds might want to know.
One last thing. When Congressman Ryan was giving his closing statement, my girlfriend remarked, “Wow. He looks more like a president than Mitt Romney.”
Wonder if independent voters watching the debate also thought that tonight.
On to the next one.
