Chicago Becoming More Disliked?

Sorry about the slow pace of posting so far this week. I was in Wisconsin from last Friday afternoon until Sunday night with extended family, and have been playing catch up ever since.

BTW, lots of Paul Ryan signs up everywhere.

Well, it looks like I missed another violence-filled weekend in Chicago. 8 slain (6 alone on Saturday- tying February 19 for the most homicides on a single day in 2012) from Friday evening through early Monday.

And as of yesterday, there are 38 homicides on the books this month in the city- 3 more than all of August last year.

When the Chicago City Council Wars were going on back in the 1980s, the Wall Street Journal called the city “Beirut by the Lake.”

I wouldn’t be surprised to see that nickname make a comeback in light of the rising shootings/homicides.

And while surfing the Internet for blog material, I see Chicago called a lot of other unflattering names with increasing regularity. Especially on gun rights- and prepping/survival-related sites.

To give you an idea of just how disliked the “Windy City” may actually be among a number of other Americans these days (and fellow Illinois residents for that matter), consider the intro to MidwestUSA’s The Best Defense: Survival! television show that airs on the Outdoor Channel:

Nice mushroom cloud over Downtown Chicago.

Was Chicago randomly-chosen by the intro’s creators to be the American city that’s nuked in that segment, or was it deliberate?

I have a suspicion it might be the latter.

As for the TV show? While not too in-depth, hosts Michael Bane and Michael Janich touch on a lot of topics and provide plenty of ideas for the prepper/survivalist to follow up on. From the Outdoor Channel website:

MidwayUSA’s The Best Defense: Survival!, hosted by Michael Bane, is an exciting new show that features defense methods and survival techniques to help men and women be able to quickly analyze, respond and react accordingly to some of the most dangerous and unimaginable situations ever encountered. Terrorism, natural disasters and emergencies of all types are featured.

As a companion show to the hit program MidwayUSA’s The Best Defense, the survival edition of the series travels the United States visiting military and civilian training centers to educate the viewer through life-threatening scenarios. How would you survive a building collapse? What’s the first thing you do if your car is sinking in a lake?

You can find out more information about the show on the Outdoor Channel site here.

Signing off from “Chiraq”…

Chicago Violence Brings Response From City Hall, Self-Defense Experts

Shootings are up 11 percent from a year earlier in Chicago.

Homicides are up 36 percent.

And as I noted yesterday, the wildings (or flash mobs/mob actions as some also call them) are back.

City Hall’s response?

Hire more police officers?

Nope. Even though rank-and-file Chicago police officers have vented their frustration about a manpower shortage for some time now in such gathering places like the unofficial Chicago Police Department blog Second City Cop, and Fraternal Order of Police spokesperson Pat Camden pointed out on the Chicago Tribune website today:

We’ve had 1,000 officers retire in the last two years. They’ve (the department) hired 150.

Instead, the City of Chicago will pay out overtime to police officers. Jeremy Gorner, David Heinzmann, and Peter Nickeas wrote on the Tribune site this morning:

With homicides soaring so far this year and another bloody weekend in the books, Chicago police intend to announce at roll calls that overtime will be paid to officers working their days off beginning this weekend, according to a department-issued memo obtained by the Tribune.

The communication from First Deputy Superintendent Alfonza Wysinger makes clear that the initiative is targeted at curbing the growing violence. It comes at a time when the city is struggling with budget woes…

Time will tell if this strategy works.

In the meantime, for those readers concerned about the wildings/mob actions/flash mobs in Chicago (and elsewhere, as 2011 showed it just wasn’t confined to the Windy City), advice from two well-known personal defense personalities in dealing with such life-threatening acts comes to mind.

Gabe Suarez, a decorated veteran of Southern California law enforcement and president of the personal safety training outfit Suarez International, addressed these threats in his Warrior Talk News blog back on June 26 last year. Suarez listed a number of recent incidents, then wrote:

These events have consumed the discussion at most self-defense focused websites in the last few weeks. Accompanying the discussion is the usual hand wringing regarding what to do if one is beset by a gang of thugs bent on your destruction. Well, I have my views on this which will no doubt shock the senses of the Doodley Doo Rights of the gun world.

First, this was not some group of young teenaged honor students. In all cases it was a group of urban thugs. Second, they were not there to practice for their debate on the ills of capitalism. Third, they understand only one thing…violence. So understand who they are and be ready to speak their language…

Suarez went on to prove “language lessons” in the post, which can be read in its entirety on Warrior Talk News here.

Then there’s Michael Bane- journalist, author, and host of a number of Outdoor Channel TV shows such as Shooting Gallery, MidwayUSA’s The Best Defense, and MidwayUSA’s The Best Defense: Survival! In episode #40 of The Best Defense, which aired on the Outdoor Channel on December 28, 2011, Bane, along with other self-defense personalities Michael Janich and Mike Seeklander, guided viewers through different scenarios and solutions to wilding/flash mob attacks.

You can watch the 5 minute 41 second segment on Bane’s DownRange.TV website here.

Stay safe…

Beware Of Bump And Rob

Ever heard of Bump and Rob? They aren’t those two guys hanging out at the end of the bar at your local watering hole, like Cliff and Norm. From the City of Boulder, Colorado, website:

Bump and Rob

Beware of the “bump and rob.” It works like this. A car, usually with a driver and at least one passenger, rear-ends your vehicle, or “bumps” you in traffic. When you get out to check the damage, the driver or one of the passengers in the other vehicle jumps in your car and drives off.

Or robs you and your passengers before driving off with your vehicle- or just robs you- it should be added.

Last night I was watching the latest installment of the MidwayUSA show The Best Defense on the Outdoor Channel, which focused on this type of criminal activity. Hosts Michael Janich and Mike Seeklander demonstrated how to effectively deal with a “bump and rob” situation.

A well-publicized “bump and rob” event just took place north of Chicago a few weeks ago. Lee Filas reported on the Daily Herald website on January 6:

A motorist was robbed at gunpoint in what Gurnee Police say was a bump-and-rob scam.

Police said a victim in a Honda minivan was heading west on Grand Avenue in Gurnee about 2 p.m. Wednesday when the vehicle was bumped from behind by a newer-model Ford Mustang near Waveland Avenue, east of Route 41.

When the victim and two offenders exited their vehicles to check on the damage, authorities said, one of the offenders displayed a handgun and demanded cash from the driver of the minivan.

After the victim turned over an unknown amount of cash, police said, the two offenders hopped back in the Mustang and fled east toward Route 41.

Would you know what to do if faced with a similar scenario? The City of Boulder’s website suggested:

If you are bumped by another car, look around you before you get out. Make sure there are other cars around you, check out the car that has rear-ended you and see who is in it. If the situation makes you uneasy, stay in the car, or insist on moving it to a busy, well-lighted area to exchange information. If you have a cellular phone, call the police from inside your car. If you get out of your vehicle, remove your keys from the ignition and take them with you.

Good advice. Anyone else care to add anything?
