Gun Registration Often Leads To Confiscation, As New Yorkers Find Out Once More

Why Gun Rights Advocates Oppose Gun Registration

A centralized registration system is the one usually proposed by gun control activists, and it is the type most feared by gun rights advocates. At the heart of resistance to registration is the belief that it encourages firearm prohibitions and ultimately leads to confiscation. (It is also why many choose not to comply and register weapons already owned.)

Those who favor more gun control often accuse gun owners of being paranoid, but the track record of firearms registration is not a good one.”

-GunCite.com, popular firearms information website, August 24, 2007

Supporters of more gun “control” in the United States routinely push for the registration of firearms.

And, “Don’t worry,” they like to say, “No one is going to take away your guns.”

Problem is, history repeatedly shows otherwise.

I blogged backed on January 14, 2013:

Gun registration often leads to confiscation. From the latest edition of Gun Facts, a popular firearm reference book:

Myth: Registration does not lead to confiscation

Fact: It did in Canada. The handgun registration law of 1934 was the source used to identify and confiscate (without compensation) over half of the registered handguns in 2001.
Fact: It did in Germany. The (before the Nazis came into power) required all firearms to be registered. When Hitler came into power, the existing lists were used for confiscating weapons.
Fact: It did in Australia. In 1996, the Australian government confiscated over 660,000 previously legal weapons from their citizens.
Fact: It did in California. The 1989 Roberti-Roos Assault Weapons Control Act required registration. Due to shifting definitions of “assault weapons,” many legal firearms are now being confiscated by the California government.
Fact: It did in New York City. In 1967, New York City passed an ordinance requiring a citizen to obtain a permit to own a rifle or shotgun, which would then be registered. In 1991, the city passed a ban on the private possession of some semi-automatic rifles and shotguns, and “registered” owners were told that those firearms had to be surrendered, rendered inoperable, or taken out of the city.
Fact: It did in Bermuda, Cuba, Greece, Ireland, Jamaica, and Soviet Georgia as well.

Now, you can add the “Big Apple” to that list for a second time. Edmund DeMarche reported on the FOX News website earlier today:

The New York City Police Department is taking aim at owners of shotguns and rifles capable of holding more than five rounds, demanding such guns be surrendered, altered or taken out of the city.

The demand came in the form of some 500 letters mailed out to owners of registered long guns that are in violation of a 2010 city ordinance. The first option for the letter’s recipient is to, “Immediately surrender your Rifle and/or Shotgun to your local police precinct, and notify this office of the invoice number. The firearm may be sold or permanently removed from the City of New York thereafter.”

(Editor’s note: Italics added for emphasis)

“Surrendered, altered or taken out of the city.”

Sound familiar?

“Question: Why is it, every time I buy and register a gun in New York City, it gets confiscated?

Man, funk dat!”

Glenn Beck: ‘We Are The First Responders’

Glenn Beck, the conservative radio/television host, political commentator, and author, gave the keynote address at the National Rifle Association’s 2013 national convention that just wrapped up in Houston. Beck, who I actually met and spoke to briefly when I was in Dallas at the end of March for the FoodInsurance™ “Ready, Set, Prep” Summit, pointed out the following concerning the term “first responders” as he spoke about different firearms that “tell the story and teach the story of the 2nd Amendment.” From his speech:

9/11- Walter Reaver’s Revolver

September 11th, 2001. A moment in history that will define this generation. While victims were running away, men, were running into those buildings. Amazing men like young Walter Weaver, a member of the NYPD and an NRA life member. He was last seen in the World Trade Center trying to rescue people. He was in the lobby trying to free people trapped in an elevator. A servant fighting for the individual’s freedom until the very end.

After the towers fell and the nation mourned, we sifted through the rubble, this is all that was left as a reminder of Walter Weaver. A silent token of liberty.

Walter Weaver, I’m sure wouldn’t want to be called a hero.

He was simply an American.

He was an example of what we all should be—men, who just do the right thing when time calls our name.

When there is an emergency or trouble we are the ones that should run to help. We must be the action on the other end of the 911 call.

I don’t know, but I believe Walter Weaver would tell you that he wasn’t trained to be hero by the police academy.

But he was raised in a culture that taught him about self-sacrifice and to always do the right thing, even when no one else is watching. He had those things long before he wore a uniform.

How many of us can say that.

Good cops, bad cop, it doesn’t mean you take all the badges. It’s the people, not the badge.

As good as the policemen in our country are. When you are in trouble the average police response rate is 8 minutes; most crimes take less than one.

If a responsible citizen with a gun had been in that movie theater in Colorado, or if members in the audience in that theater were allowed to bring their gun into the theater and not leave them locked in their cars, how many lives would have been saved?

How many of the mourning, children would instead have been able to spend time over breakfast with their mom or dad this morning if someone good was allowed to have a gun?

While our politicians from the local to the federal level have spent us into oblivion, and our public services are being obliterated and our police force is being cut.

I will no longer accept the media falsehood nor reinforce it by calling our brave men and women in blue on our cities and streets first responders. It’s time for America to recognize WE are the first responders.

They are the 2nd responders, we are the first responders.

When there is trouble let us be the first on the scene to help.

Let us be the first responder when someone is sick or hungry or frightened.

Let us be the first to share our bread with the hungry; Let us be the first to open our hearts to the homeless poor; Let us be the first to remove the yoke of injustice.

I don’t know what America will choose. But for me and my family, I choose to stand with courage. I choose to stand with selflessness. I chose to stand with God with Malice toward none and charity to all.

That’s who we are.

Forget what the media says, I know that’s who we are.

Talk Of Gun Confiscation, Compulsory ‘Buy-Backs’

Recent talk of banning “assault weapons” and “high-capacity” ammunition magazines has turned into discussion about gun confiscation and compulsory “buy-backs” by leading Democrats.

(Editor’s note: How can government buy back something it never owned in the first place?)

There’s talk of confiscation and a compulsory “buy-back” in the state of New York. Thomas Kaplan reported on The New York Times website last Thursday that New York’s Democratic Governor Andrew Cuomo had discussed gun “control” in an interview on an Albany radio station that same day. Kaplan wrote:

In the interview, Mr. Cuomo did not offer specifics about the measures he might propose, but, while discussing assault weapons, he said: “Confiscation could be an option. Mandatory sale to the state could be an option. Permitting could be an option — keep your gun but permit it.”

(Editor’s note: Italics added for emphasis)

Confiscation. Compulsory “buy-back.”

No mention of an option to not implement more gun “control” in the state of New York.

And speaking of gun confiscation- but on a national level- CBS New York ran the following on their website this past Saturday:

Amid talk of reinstating the assault weapons ban that expired eight years ago, police departments nationwide are thinking of ways to confiscate such weapons.

As WCBS 880’s Marla Diamond reported, among the departments considering taking action is the NYPD. Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said if Congress were to reinstate the ban, police are wondering whether it will be their responsibility to confiscate them.

(Editor’s note: Italics added for emphasis)

“Police departments nationwide are thinking of ways to confiscate such weapons.”

I don’t think owners of “assault weapons” will be too happy to hear that.

There’s also chatter about a potential national compulsory gun “buy-back.” Joel Gehrke reported on the Washington Examiner website on Friday:

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., said that she and other gun control advocates are considering a law that would create a program to purchase weapons from gun owners, a proposal that could be compulsory.

We are also looking at a buy-back program,” Feinstein said today in a press conference. “Now, again, this is a work in progress so these are ideas in the development.”

(Editor’s note: Italics added for emphasis)

Gun confiscations and compulsory “buy-backs.”

What next?

Looting In New York City After Hurricane Sandy

We are supposed to come together as a community during times of crisis, not pick at each other like vultures. Next time I’m getting a gun.

-Roy Troyano, owner of Joann’s Discount Wine and Liquors, Coney Island, Brooklyn, New York, in a New York Daily News article earlier today

I figured it was only a matter of time before the looting started in New York City and elsewhere along the storm-ravaged East Coast in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. Joe Coscarelli wrote in a brief piece on the New York Magazine website today:

During this trying time, most New Yorkers are doing their absolute best to help people out and be polite. Unfortunately, there have also been numerous reports of looting from Coney Island to Queens.

(Editor’s note: Italics added for emphasis)

And from Nancy Dillon and Matthew Lysiak on the New York Daily News website today:

A wave of looters followed the Sandy storm surge in Coney Island, creating a double-whammy for business owners trying to pick up the obliterated pieces.

The thieves started down Mermaid Avenue Tuesday morning as the chest-high water receded, turning the seaside community known for its hotdogs and tourist attractions into a lawless free-for-all.

According to one store employee at the famous tourist spot, 50 to 100 people took part in the looting spree.

Finally, Emily Anne Epstein and Adam Shergold wrote on the Daily Mail (UK) website Wednesday:

Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz has called on New York Governor Andrew Cuomo to put a stop to the looting ravaging South Brooklyn.

Police have so far arrested nearly a dozen people for the crime, but Mr Markowitz said that the FDNY, police, and other first responders are overwhelmed in the borough and desperately need relief…

Although there have only been reports of a dozen or so arrests related to lootings, media coverage and online accounts indicate the actual problem is much more widespread.

(Editor’s note: Italics added for emphasis)

The Daily Mail crew did a real fine job illustrating the looting problem going on in New York City. Check out their work here on the British paper’s website.

Latest On Al-Qaeda, Iran Terror Threats To U.S.

The following graphic, which was discovered yesterday on an Arabic-speaking web site, is turning a few heads in the counter-terrorism community:

From Al Baker on The New York Times website earlier today:

Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly said the image, discovered early on Monday on an Arabic-language Web site, was not tied to any specific threat against the city

Mr. Kelly said investigators “are still, obviously, very much concerned about the origination of this message” and are working with their counterparts in the federal government to understand its meaning, the timing and who is behind it.

Later on Tuesday, J. Peter Donald, a spokesman for the Federal Bureau of Investigation, said that its terrorism task force was also investigating. He added: “There continues to be no specific or credible threat to New York at this time.”

(Editor’s note: Italics added for emphasis)

Others dismiss the idea that the image was meant to be a threat completely. Baker added:

But several terrorism experts were skeptical. One of them, Aaron Y. Zelin, the editor of the blog Jihadology and a researcher in the department of politics at Brandeis University, said in an e-mail that it “appears dubious” that the post was a real threat.

“The pictures were posted in ‘Department of Audio & Visual’ / ‘Images & Design’ as a note on how to Photoshop,” Mr. Zelin said. “It was a lesson, not threat,” he said.

Some lesson. As if the following Photoshopped image wasn’t worrisome enough already:

On a more serious note, a senior Iranian military commander issued a separate threat to the United States today. From Reuters this morning:

The United States would not be safe from retaliation if Iran is attacked by Washington, the Iran newspaper quoted a senior Revolutionary Guards commander on Tuesday as saying.

“In the face of any attack, we will have a crushing response. In that case, we will not only act in the boundaries of the Middle East and the Persian Gulf, no place in America will be safe from our attacks,” Massoud Jazayeri was quoted as saying by the daily.

Iran would not strike any country first, he said.

(Editor’s note: Italics added for emphasis)

As I pointed out recently, some terrorism observers believe Iran has intelligence officers and other assets already in the United States who may be capable of carrying out retaliatory strikes within the U.S. homeland should Iran be attacked by America and/or Israel.

Thousands Of Iranian-Backed Hezbollah Agents Could Be Inside The U.S.

Despite ObamaCare and Trayvon Martin hogging recent headlines, the Iranian nuclear crisis continues. From Roberta Rampton (Reuters) on the Chicago Tribune website late this morning:

The Senate may soon consider a new package of proposed sanctions targeting Iran’s oil revenues, Democratic Majority Leader Harry Reid said on Tuesday.

The sanctions would focus on foreign banks that handle transactions for Iran’s national oil and tanker companies, and include a host of measures aimed to close loopholes in existing sanctions.

Back on March 15, 2012, I discussed the role Iranian intelligence (Ministry of Intelligence and National Security of the Islamic Republic of Iran, or MISIRI) might play in the event Iran’s nuclear facilities were attacked by the West. I wrote:

Others think MISIRI could carry out terror attacks here inside the United States. Retired CIA veteran Michael Scheuer, who tracked Osama bin Laden as Chief of the Bin Laden Issue Station (“Alec Station”) from 1996 to 1999 and later as a special advisor to the unit from 2001 to 2004, told Lou Dobbs on the FOX Business channel several days ago:

The Iranians don’t have a military capable of conducting themselves on an even basis with the United States, but within the United States, within Canada, within Mexico, within the Caribbean area, the Iranians have an intelligence and terror apparatus that’s perfectly capable of exacting revenge for them here at home. Much more than Saddam. Much more than Al-Qaeda. And although they won’t use it unless they’re attacked, I’m afraid they will use it if our Arab and Israeli friends go ahead and attack the Iranians.

(Editor’s note: Italics added for emphasis)

Apparently, MISIRI loves company (just had to fit that one in somewhere), and word is getting out that the Iranian-backed militant group Hezbollah may have hundreds- if not thousands- of operatives inside the United States. Taking part in a Homeland Security hearing on Iran, U.S. Representative Peter King (R-NY) appeared on the CNN show Starting Point on March 21 and warned viewers of the threat Iran poses from within the country. He said:

Most Americans don’t realize that Hezbollah has had agents and operatives in this country for many years. The conventional wisdom among intelligence and law enforcement officials was they were here for fundraising, for facilitation, recruitment, and not necessarily to carry out terrorist attacks. However, we do know that a number of them have been trained as terrorists. The question is, how quickly they can be made operational, and would they carry out an attack?

King added:

The American intelligence community… believes we are very much at risk for an attack by Iranian operatives- which would be Hezbollah. That is a terrorist-trained force in this country. It really is the “A-Team” of international terrorism, and far more sophisticated than Al-Qaeda.

(Editor’s note: Italics added for emphasis)

How many Hezbollah operatives are possibly inside the United States? The Chairman of the Homeland Security Committee says:

We estimate it to be at least in the hundreds, maybe the thousands, of Hezbollah agents here in this country.

(Editor’s note: Italics added for emphasis)

“King: Iran could be ‘serious threat’”
YouTube Video

Staff at the Daily Mail (UK) added on March 21:

Mitchell Silber, the NYPD’s director of intelligence analysis and one of the witnesses to the [Homeland Security hearing] panel, confirmed that said since 2005, New York law enforcement officers have interviewed at least 13 people with ties to Iran’s government who were seen taking pictures of New York City landmarks. Police considered the activity to be pre-operational surveillance.

He added that New York’s international significance as a terror target and its large Jewish population make the city a likely place for Iran and Hezbollah to strike.

In May 2005, Silber said, tips led the NYPD to six people on a sight-seeing cruise who were taking pictures and movies of city landmarks like the Brooklyn Bridge. In September 2008, police interviewed three people taking pictures of railroad tracks. And in September 2010, federal air marshals saw four people taking pictures and videos at a New York heliport.

Interviews with law enforcement revealed that all were associated with the Iranian government, but they were ultimately released and never charged, Silber said.

(Editor’s note: Italics added for emphasis)

Signs Of The Time, Part 28

If I were New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, I wouldn’t be worrying about the possibility (inevitability?) of disenfranchised Americans rioting.

It’s the return of the squeegee men to the Big Apple I’d be concerned with.

From Bill Hutchinson and Edgar Sandoval of New York City’s Daily News today:

Squeegee men, the aggressive panhandlers who wash your car windows whether you want them to or not, are back.

Armed with buckets and $5 squeegees, a squad of men waded into stalled Times Square traffic Sunday to lather up windshields, swipe them clean and beckon for tips from drivers – some annoyed by the intrusion…

For some, they’re a powerful symbol that the busted economy is bringing back the bad old days.

“I’m walking and I see a man cleaning a car window. It took me back in time. I had to do a double take to make sure I was seeing right,” said Reggie Thomas, 44.

I’m guessing Bloomberg will take a page out of his predecessor’s playbook to deal with the squeegee scourge. Former Mayor Rudy Giuliani wrote in his autobiography Leadership:

We attacked crime immediately, but we knew it would take time to show results. Reducing the number of crimes would not be enough: people had to see improvement. We had to get people to feel safe.

That’s how the idea for addressing the squeegee man problem appeared. There were men who would wander up to a car stopped in traffic, spray the windshield, & wipe it down. After the unsolicited “cleaning,” the man would request payment.

My belief was that treating small crimes was a way to establish lawful, civil behavior & a feeling of safety. The police chief said we lacked a legal basis to move them as long as they were not threatening drivers or demanding money. I said, how about that they are jaywalking. When they stepped off the curb they violated the law. Then, in giving them tickets, you could investigate whether there were outstanding warrants & so on.

In under a month, we reduced the problem dramatically. New Yorkers loved it & so did all the visitors who brought money into the city.

Here in the Windy City, I’ve haven’t seen too many squeegee guys around (I-55 exit onto Cicero Avenue comes to mind, but that was some time ago). I have to wonder if it’s only a matter of time before they come out en masse here.

Thefts Of Five Vans Around NYC, DC Terrorism-Related?

Something Washingtonians should be concerned about? From the Associated Press a short time ago:

Prince George’s County police are looking for two stolen vans.

Spokesman Cpl. Evan Baxter says the two Ford Econoline vans were stolen at different times from two different U-Haul lots in the Temple Hills area Saturday.

This news comes in the wake of reports about three other vans being stolen in the New York City area. From the Associated Press this afternoon:

The New York Police Department is paying special attention to the thefts of three vans after a tip of a possible car bomb on the 9/11 anniversary.

The department’s chief spokesman Paul Browne says the van thefts may be nothing more than the work of savvy criminals, but they are being scrutinized to eliminate the possibility of something more sinister.

One of the vans was stolen from a Jersey City, N.J. facility. The other two were stolen last week from a company that does work at the World Trade Center site.

(Editor’s note: Italics added for emphasis)

Here’s hoping nothing of significance comes from any of these thefts.

Two Potential Terrorist Threat Streams Being Tracked In New York City, Washington D.C.

Earlier tonight I watched that press conference that was held in New York City regarding a potential terrorist threat. Turns out there are actually two. From the CBS News website:

At a news conference Thursday night, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg says a terror threat against the city is credible but not corroborated. He said at police headquarters the New York Police Department is deploying additional resources around city to keep residents safe.

Bloomberg also said that there was no reason for people to change their daily routines, but mentioned: “If you see something, say something.”

A Federal source told CBS News that FBI and intelligence authorities are currently tracking two distinct threat streams — one involving a car bombing threat in New York or Washington and a separate threat against bridges and tunnels in New York. It is unknown if there is a correlation between the two threats.

In an attempt to reassure residents of the Big Apple, Mayor Bloomberg remarked during the press conference that he’ll be taking the train to work tomorrow.

I’m guessing his security detail will be along for the ride as well.

Alerts Issued Over Possible Retaliation For Bin Laden’s Death

Indeed, in the short term it is possible that terrorism may increase. Some jihadists may seek revenge, lashing out at any target that is convenient. Al Qaeda’s remaining senior leaders may also try to orchestrate attacks to demonstrate the organization’s continued relevance. They may hurry up plots already gestating or hit unprotected — so-called “soft” — targets that take little preparation to strike.

-Daniel Byman, professor in the Security Studies Program at Georgetown University and the director of research at the Saban Center for Middle East Policy at the Brookings Institution, on the Foreign Policy website this morning

In the wake of the announcement by President Obama that Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden is dead, alerts are going out over possible retaliatory attacks against American interests by Muslim extremists. From the FOX News website this morning:

As Americans celebrated the news that Usama bin Laden had been killed following a decade-long international manhunt, they also faced renewed warnings that Al Qaeda and its affiliates may seek to exact revenge for the killing of their longtime leader.

U.S. officials, while congratulating the CIA-led SEALs team that took down bin Laden, sent out a wave of alerts overnight about the possibility of retaliation…

Authorities have sent a notice to diplomatic personnel around the world telling them U.S. “diplomatic facilities” are now on “high alert” after bin Laden’s death. The notice described the security situation as “severe,” though it noted “no specific security threats have been identified.”

The New York and Los Angeles police departments have both issued alerts to officers in the field, telling them to be particularly vigilant in light of bin Laden’s death.

The State Department overnight also issued a travel alert to U.S. citizens abroad, urging caution “in areas where recent events could cause anti-American violence.” The department instructed Americans to limit travel outside their homes and hotels and avoid mass gatherings.

The Department of Homeland Security sent out a warning that offered a bit more detail. The warning, obtained by Fox News, said Al Qaeda affiliates “may seek to accelerate plotting efforts in the homeland, particularly Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula.”

The threats of revenge have started. This morning Reuters’ Saud Mehsud reported that the Pakistani Taliban threatened attacks against a number of parties. Mehsud wrote:

“Now Pakistani rulers, President Zardari and the army will be our first targets. America will be our second target,” Ehsanullah Ehsan, a spokesman for Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), or Taliban Movement of Pakistan, told Reuters by telephone from an undisclosed location.

Meanwhile, here in Chicago, counter-terrorism activities appear subdued. The Chicago Tribune’s Jeremy Gorner and Carlos Sandovi reported this morning:

Chicago police say they are keeping an eye on religious institutions as a precaution in the wake of Osama bin Laden’s death at the hands of U.S. special forces.

The department has not issued a heightened alert, but officers are paying closer attention to mosques, synagogues and churches, particularly in the Rogers Park and West Rogers Park neighborhoods, officials said this morning.

Chicago aviation officials would not say whether security has been increased at O’Hare and Midway airports, referring questions to the Transportation Security Administration, which referred questions to the Department of Homeland Security, which released this statement:

“We remain at a heightened state of vigilance. Secretary [Janet] Napolitano has been clear since . . . January that we will only issue alerts when we have specific or credible information to convey to the American public. Our security posture, which always includes a number of measures both seen and unseen, will continue to protect the American people from an evolving threat picture both in the next days and beyond.”

Metra said it has not taken any stepped-up precautions on its trains. CTA officials had no immediate comment.
