Numismatic News: ‘Precious Metals, On Average, Have Outperformed U.S. Stocks Since The End Of 1999’

“Past performance is not indicative of future results.” That being said, I spotted the following over on the Numismatic News website tonight. Pat Heller reported Thursday:

While much attention is now focused on U.S. stock indices reaching record levels, only a handful of people are aware that precious metals, on average, have outperformed U.S. stocks since the end of 1999.

As measured in U.S. dollars, here are how various asset classes have performed from Dec. 31, 1999, to Dec. 30, 2016

Gold +299.0%
Silver +193.5%
Russell 2000 +168.9%
MS-63 $20 Saint-Gaudens +147.9%
MS-63 $20 Liberty +139.8%
Platinum +111.5%
Dow Jones Industrial Average +71.9%
Switzerland Franc +56.4%
MS-65 Morgan dollar +54.4%
Palladium +54.1%
Standard & Poors 500 +52.4%
NASDAQ +32.3%
China yuan +19.2%
Australia dollar +9.8%
Canada dollar +8.2%
Euro +4.5%
Japan yen -12.7%
Great Britain pound -23.6%
Brazil real -44.3%
Mexico peso -54.3%
South Africa rand -55.0%…

(Editor’s note: Bold added for emphasis)

Interesting. Note the performance of numismatic coins ($20 Saint-Gaudens, $20 Liberty, Morgan dollar) in that list.

The inclusion of “MS-65 $20 Saint-Gaudens”- popular with numismatic gold investors- in the analysis would have been neat to see.

I just blogged about a MarketWatch piece on rare coin investing this Tuesday, which pointed out:

Between 1979 and 2014, the most recent year for which data is available, coins with a minimum score of 65 posted an average annual return of 11.9%, according to a study by Penn State University. That’s near the average annual return of 13% posted by equities and more than twice the 5.5% average annual gain of gold bullion. Coins with a lower score, between 63 and 65, had an average annual return of 10.1%.

(Editor’s note: Bold added for emphasis)

Getting back to that Numismatic News piece, Heller also discussed long-term performance of some major currencies against an ounce of gold and recent demand for precious metals. An informative article, which you can read in its entirety on the publication’s website here.

Marc Faber: ‘The Most Desirable Currency Will Be Gold, Silver, Platinum, And Palladium’

Swiss-born investment advisor/money manager Marc Faber was on the phone with the CNBC TV show Fast Money last Tuesday. When asked if he is bullish on gold and “is that inherently a call on the U.S. dollar as well?”, the publisher of the monthly investment newsletter The Gloom Boom & Doom Report responded:

Yes. I don’t understand why the world is so enthusiastic about the U.S. dollar. I think in the long run the U.S. dollar will be a weak currency… I think that actually the U.S. dollar, provided the Fed doesn’t cut interest rates again and provided the Fed doesn’t introduce negative interest rates, provided all these conditions, I think the U.S. dollar should be okay. But it’s not a desirable currency. And that’s why I think the most desirable currency will be gold, silver, platinum, and palladium.

Advertiser Spotlight: Buy Gold And Silver Coins (BGASC)

Last June, I received an e-mail from an affiliate marketing partner of Survival And Prosperity which said they were terminating the relationship due to “nexus tax implications.” Curse this state (just kidding). Because blog readers were interested in the goods they sold (physical bullion), I searched for another reputable online retailer of gold and silver products to replace (surpass?) them. Enter Buy Gold And Silver Coins (BGASC). From the Calabasas, California-based bullion dealer’s “About Us” page:

Our goal is to be the kind of dealer we’ve always wanted to trade with: to be in stock, ship fast, be fair & reasonable, and operate honestly and efficiently. BGASC is one of the largest coin and bullion dealers in the United States. We are an Official PCGS Dealer, member of the Certified Coin Exchange (CCE), an NGC Collector’s Society Member, and a Bulk Purchaser of United States Mint non-bullion coins. Every single package we ship is sent fully privately insured for its time in transit. Customers all across the country have quickly come to recognize BGASC as one of the largest, fastest, most trusted online precious metals suppliers in the U.S. But you don’t have to take our word for it… Read BGASC Customer Reviews

In addition to being an official PCGS dealer, BGASC is also an American Numismatic Association member and listed in the ANA dealer directory.

Buy Gold And Silver Coins “stock a Large Selection of Gold and Silver Bullion Coins, Bars and Rounds as well as PCGS & NGC Graded Numismatic Coins.” Prices are “ultra-competitive” and they have “NO hidden fees, NO commissioned sales, and we don’t do phone solicitation calls either.” On their website, there’s an “ON SALE” section which routinely features “current sales, price reductions, and specially priced gold and silver bullion.” Right now, there’s a big silver sale going on.

BGASC also sells coins supplies and provides information on precious metals IRAs via their website.

Orders totaling $250 and up ship FREE (usually next business day). And according to their website, orders less than $250 ship for only $5.95 (no order minimum). Each package carries full shipping insurance (underwritten by Lloyd’s of London) during its time in transit, and is trackable by the customer from the time it’s placed to the time of delivery. Gold ‘One Of The Best Assets To Own In 2016’?

Gold is making headlines again as interest in the yellow metal picks up due to the recent carnage on Wall Street and other financial concerns. It’s been some time since I’ve checked-up on precious metals, and here are excerpts from two insightful articles I read Wednesday afternoon. Mark Decambre reported on the MarketWatch website today:

Who would have guessed that gold would be one of the best assets to own in 2016? So far, that has been the case- while the U.S. stock market has rung up its worst start to a year and a miasma of economic gloom continues to roll across much of the world.

Gold is on a hot streak, after shrugging off the Federal Reserve’s interest-rate increase back in December that should have spelled doom for prices. Instead, it’s on track to gain 5.4% so far in 2016, FactSet data show. True, it’s still early in the year, but if gold were to just tread water for the next 11 months, it would mark the best annual gain in four years.

By comparison, the S&P 500 is down 6.4%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average has slumped 7% and the Nasdaq Composite has skidded a hefty 9%…

(Editor’s note: Bold added for emphasis)

Decambre added that silver is up 5 percent, platinum is down 1 percent, and palladium is also down 11 percent so far in 2016.

Down the stretch, Thomson Reuters GFMS analysts predict gold could end up having a good year. Jan Harvey reported Tuesday on the Reuters website:

Gold demand fell 2 percent last year, GFMS analysts at Thomson Reuters said on Tuesday, but is set to recover in 2016 as U.S. rate hikes arrive more slowly than expected, while concerns over economic growth and yuan weakness stimulate Chinese buying.

In 2016 GFMS sees gold prices, currently near $1,100 an ounce, recovering to above $1,200 an ounce by year-end, and averaging $1,164 an ounce in the full year. Gold demand is expected to grow by 5 percent this year, it said…

Mine supply is set to keep falling after posting its largest quarterly decline since 2008 in the last quarter, while lower prices are expected to stimulate retail demand, and central bank buying will remain supportive…

(Editor’s note: Bold added for emphasis)

Speaking of “mine supply,” I’m hearing more talk of “peak gold” these days, which is something I’ll have to look into.

Good news for gold these days. Which means mainstream (financial) media outlets will start beating up the yellow metal again shortly.

Marc Faber: ‘I Think The Markets Will Still Go Lower’

For the rest of the day, investing will be the focus of discussion here on Survival And Prosperity. Turning to the “crash prophets,” Swiss-born investment advisor/money manager Marc Faber was interviewed by CNBC-TV18’s Surabhi Upadhyay this past weekend. When asked if he still thought U.S. stock prices would end up falling 40 percent, the publisher of the monthly investment newsletter The Gloom Boom & Doom Report replied (from a transcript of their exchange):

What I said is that the market in the US would decline between 20 and 40 percent from the high rates last May, which was on the S&P 2,134.

(Editor’s note: Bold added for emphasis)

After U.S. stocks closed higher Friday for their first positive week in four, “Doctor Doom”- as the financial press likes to call him- warned:

I think the markets will still go lower. What we can have is the difficulties — if you print money, basically something will go up and in the case of the last few years what has gone up meaningfully are stocks but that after 2011, stocks did no longer go up…

(Editor’s note: Bold added for emphasis)

If he’s not bullish on U.S. equities, what is Dr. Faber’s recommending to investors these days? Mark O’Byrne , executive, marketing, and research director at Dublin-based international bullion dealer GoldCore, wrote on their blog last Wednesday:

Marc Faber, editor of the “Gloom, Doom & Boom Report,” has advised investors that now is a good time to invest in gold

Faber says investors would be prudent to diversify into safe haven in gold bullion which has risen 3% this year and is currently at $1,096 an ounce…

Faber favours allocated and segregated coin and bar storage in Singapore.

(Editor’s note: Bold added for emphasis)

Singapore?

Back on May 11, 2015, I blogged about an interview of Dr. Faber by Simon Black over at Sovereign Man, a provider of global financial intelligence and solutions. In the exchange that was uploaded to the Sovereign Man website on May 8, Faber told listeners:

The only currencies that I regard as significantly undervalued at the present time are the precious metals- silver, gold, platinum, palladium. And I would advise any investor to have at least some money in precious metals. The problem is, as a very informed reader of mine said, if precious metals really one day work out- in other words, gold goes to $10,000 an ounce- you can be sure that the government will take it away from you. That is a threat.

As you know in the world- since you are running an organization Sovereign Man- there is a move to curtail freedom, and there is a move to abolish paper money… If I were your listeners and I held gold, if paper money is abandoned or banished, about the last thing you want to hold is gold because it will be taken away as well. So you better close down your accounts at Citi, in my view. Put your money somewhere, anywhere in the world, except in U.S. banks.

Marc Faber Warns ‘Have At Least Some Money In Precious Metals’ And Store It Overseas

Swiss-born investment advisor/money manager Marc Faber was just interviewed by Simon Black over at Sovereign Man, a provider of global financial intelligence and solutions. The publisher of the monthly investment newsletter The Gloom Boom & Doom Report talked about the need of investors to be in precious metals, and where to store it. In the exchange that was uploaded to the Sovereign Man website on May 8, Dr. Faber told listeners:

The only currencies that I regard as significantly undervalued at the present time are the precious metals- silver, gold, platinum, palladium. And I would advise any investor to have at least some money in precious metals. So you better close down your accounts at Citi, in my view. Put your money somewhere, anywhere in the world, except in U.S. banks.

Back in February, Faber warned in a King World News interview:

The central banks and the governments will try to take the gold away from ordinary people, you understand? I think they know that this would be one solution for the global financial system to peg it again to some extent on gold. But before they do that, I think they’ll go after you and me and say, “Okay, parasites of society that do not spend but keep their money in gold that is unproductive- let us take it away.” That is the threat. I’m not worried about the price of gold. What do I care if the gold price is at $1,000 or $500 or $1,500 or $5,000? What I care is that I can keep ownership of gold.

You can listen to that Sovereign Man interview in its entirety on their website here (precious metals discussion starts at 13:59).

BofA Merrill Lynch’s MacNeil Curry Looks For Gold To ‘Move Up To About The 1,410, Potentially 1,450 Area’

“Gold has traded so badly the last few months, that it’s starting to look good to some chart watchers.

‘GOLD BEARS BEWARE,’ Merrill Lynch technical strategist MacNeil Curry told clients on Thursday. He warned against piling on to gold’s demise at current levels, because his reading of the charts suggest the downtrend may be in its final stages.”

MoneyBeat blog, Wall Street Journal website, June 27, 2013

MacNeil Curry, the head of Global Technical Strategy at BofA Merrill Lynch, talked about where he thinks gold might be heading on the CNBC show Futures Now this afternoon. He told host Jackie DeAngelis by phone:

Well, I think there’s a couple of things of gold that say this thing is probably still headed higher. First and foremost, if you go back, if you look at what we did back in mid-June, the trend was so overextended if you look at a variety of trend indicators, we were at levels from which historically, whether it was an uptrend or a downtrend, you saw a significant reversal to the tune of about 30 percent from the level from which it tends to reverse. So the 1,180 area in spot price, and the reversal we’ve seen subsequent to that, is pretty consistent with historical norms in terms of the trend got way too overstretched, if you look at the measure of weekly ADX. For example, we had reached levels at which this trend got way too stretched like a rubber band. And now we’re snapping back.

The two things that say this thing is probably going to head higher. First and foremost, the rest of the precious complex is now starting to confirm the price action in gold. If you look at silver, if you look at platinum, if you look at palladium- those things are starting to rally as well.

So it suggests that this is something more than a short squeeze in gold.

And the other thing I think is worth noting is, with respect to, if you look at where a lot of these positions had been unwinding, they had been transpiring in GLD. If you look at the shares outstanding in GLD, you can see that that is starting to stabilize, which suggests that some of the rampant selling or position unwinding which drove this market significantly lower has subsided, at least for the time being.

So I think at this stage in the game, you probably still have further upside.

And we’ve been looking for a move up to about the 1,410, potentially 1,450 area. Maybe even there we start to see signs of stalling. But I certainly wouldn’t be stepping in front of this thing in a year.

MacNeil Curry segment starts 5:07

Back on September 12, 2012, Curry told CNBC’s Worldwide Exchange that with regards to the long-term:

We will be focusing in on gold. Ultimately we think gold can trade between $3,000 and $5,000 an ounce going forward.

Citi Releases Latest Precious Metals Price Forecast

Citi, an active and well-established market participant in the precious metals marketplace, is out with their latest price forecast for such hard assets. From Francesca Freeman for the Dow Jones Newswires today:

Citi Monday cut its outlook on gold prices for the year ahead, but raised its view on the price prospects of the platinum group metals.

The bank cut its 2013 average gold price forecast by 4% to $1,675 a troy ounce. It raised its 2013 platinum price forecast, meanwhile, by 1.5% to $1,700/oz and its palladium outlook by 4.2% to $775/oz.

Demand is expected to outstrip supply with both platinum and palladium, with the situation more pronounced with the latter.

As for silver, Citi’s outlook remains unchanged from November 2012, when the New York City-based financial services company predicted its average price would be $31 per ounce in 2013, falling to $26.50 per ounce in 2014.

Gold Up 11 Percent Last Quarter, Biggest Gain In More Than 2 Years

For several years now, gold’s naysayers have predicted on numerous mainstream financial and investing websites that the precious metal was headed for a lasting beat-down.

Their claims grew louder starting in the middle of the last decade.

Notwithstanding the traditional violent corrections associated with the yellow metal, the gold price kept going higher.

As it did in the third quarter of this year.

Frank Tang reported on the Reuters website Friday afternoon:

Gold eased on Friday, but the metal posted its biggest quarterly gain in more than two years as market stimulus and easy monetary policies by central banks around the world boosted bullion’s inflation-hedge appeal.

The metal is within reach of its 2012 high, while open interest for U.S. gold futures surged to a one-year high on heavy buying related to fund positioning before the quarter end.

Gold priced in euro terms hit a record for a second straight day, highlighting the currency’s weakness and bullion’s safe-haven status among Europeans in times of economic uncertainty…

Gold still climbed around 11 percent this quarter, its best quarterly gain since the second quarter of 2010. September’s gain of almost 5 percent also extended its monthly rise to a four consecutive month.

Tang noted that other precious metals also had a good third quarter, with spot silver up around 25 percent to $34.37 an ounce, spot palladium up around 9 percent to $634.40 an ounce, and spot platinum up around 15 percent these past three months, to $1,659.24 an ounce.

On the topic of silver, the Wall Street Journal noted earlier this week that global banking group BNP Paribas is forecasting an average silver price of $32.75 an ounce for 2012 and $41.45 for 2013.
