Rise Of The Survival Communities

Fast and Furious.

No, not the alleged Obama administation gun-running progam.

Rather, the number and frequency of articles concerning the rich buying “luxury bunkers” these days.

That being said, I spotted a piece over on The Atlantic website (slated for next month’s print edition) which I think might interest readers.

In “A Resort for the Apocaypse,” Ben Rowen wrote:

On July 25, 1961, President John F. Kennedy spoke to the American people of a need “new to our shores” for emergency preparedness, including fallout shelters. The bunkers of that era- Brutalist, cement, with foldout beds and stockpiled food- were designed to protect families in the event that the Cold War turned hot.

It never did, but fears of cataclysm- nuclear and otherwise- are back. So are shelters, with a twist. Growing numbers of “preppers” hope to ride out various doomsday scenarios in luxury

(Editor’s note: Bold added for emphasis)

Rowen brought up Rising S Company, “one of several companies that specialize in high-end shelters,” and which I just blogged about here. But he also pointed out “a handful of bunker companies are building entire survival communities in remote locations.” From the article:

One project, Vivos XPoint, involves refurbishing 575 munitions-storage bunkers in South Dakota; Vivos Europa One, in Germany, is a Soviet armory turned luxury community with a subterranean swimming pool.

By contrast, Trident Lakes 4, a 700-acre, $330 million development in Ector, Texas, an hour and a half north of Dallas, is being built from scratch…

Seriously, what is it with Texas and bunkers?

Rowen went on to write a good deal about the Trident Lakes project, being billed as a “5-star playground, equipped with DEFCON 1 preparedness.”

He also noted the following about the deep-pocketed clients of luxury underground survival shelters and communities:

Jeff Schlegelmilch, the deputy director of the National Center for Disaster Preparedness at Columbia University, told me that the luxury-bunker trend is “not just a couple of fringe groups; there is real money behind it- hundreds of millions of dollars.” But why are wealthy people buying?

Some customers appear to be motivated by old anxieties, recently revived- the threat of nuclear war, or a national-debt default that leads to unrest. Others have newer fears: climate change, pandemics, terrorism, far-left and far-right extremism. The presidential election has brought new faces into the fold, namely liberals (who also contributed to a record number of background checks- an indicator of gun purchases- on Black Friday)…

(Editor’s note: Bold added for emphasis)

Interesting. But are any of the survival communities mentioned potentially within the budget of the not-so-well-heeled? Well, Vivos xPoint, which is being billed as “the largest survival community on earth,” advertises this on their project web page:

Priced At Just $25,00 Per Bunker
No Per Person Charge

The biggest feature is the extremely low and affordable price. Each bunker is being privately and exclusively provided under:

A Bunker Lease for 99-years, with a one-time, upfront payment of just $25,000 per bunker;

coupled with,

A Ground Lease for 99-years, with an ongoing payment of just $1,000 per year

Your bunker will be your blank canvas to prepare as much, or as little as you like, with no restrictions on how many people will share it with you when the moment of truth (aka SHTF) arrives. So, you may bring as many friends and family as you like to accommodate in your private bunker, at NO EXTRA CHARGE!

If you shelter 10 people in your bunker, the effective cost is just $2,500 each. With 20 people, the cost is just $1,250 per person. Do the math, there is no lower cost shelter solution, anywhere

Vivos xPoint Promo Video

Watching that marketing video, Vivos isn’t kidding about that “blank canvas” bit.

Regular readers of Survival And Prosperity might remember The Vivos Group from a June 2013 post about the planned construction of “the world’s largest private underground survival shelter”- Vivos Survival Shelter & Resort- in an existing below-ground complex in Atchison, Kansas. Alas, the project was cancelled as “numerous concerns arose related to the geological stability and safety of the cave structure that we believe may compromise its ability to withstand the anticipated forces of future catastrophic or earth changing events.”

From the looks of things, that setback hasn’t stopped Vivos from charging ahead with new projects.

You can read “A Resort for the Apocalypse” here on The Atlantic website.

Protecting Against The Ebola Virus

August 4, 2014
Outbreak Update

The World Health Organization, in partnership with the Ministries of Health in Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Nigeria announced a cumulative total of 1603 suspect and confirmed cases of Ebola virus disease (EVD) and 887 deaths, as of August 1, 2014. Of the 1603 clinical cases, 1009 cases have been laboratory confirmed for Ebola virus infection.”

-Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website, August 5, 2014

A little over five months ago, I first started blogging about the outbreak of the Ebola virus in West Africa. I wrote at the time:

Am I worried Ebola might spread to the United States?

Not really. From what I understand, the quality of a country’s healthcare infrastructure plays an important role in containing the threat…

Still, the public health authorities need to keep on top of this.

While I remain dubious about a widespread outbreak of Ebola (in its current form) in America, I am curious about the measures an individual can take to protect against the deadly virus.

Consider the following from the “Ebola Hemorrhagic Fever” area on the CDC website:

When cases of the disease do appear, there is increased risk of transmission within health care settings. Therefore, health care workers must be able to recognize a case of Ebola HF and be ready to employ practical viral hemorrhagic fever isolation precautions or barrier nursing techniques. They should also have the capability to request diagnostic tests or prepare samples for shipping and testing elsewhere.

Barrier nursing techniques include:

• wearing of protective clothing (such as masks, gloves, gowns, and goggles)
• the use of infection-control measures (such as complete equipment sterilization and routine use of disinfectant)
• isolation of Ebola HF patients from contact with unprotected persons.

The aim of all of these techniques is to avoid contact with the blood or secretions of an infected patient.

Even though these are barrier nursing techniques being discussed here, I’m confident these same protective measures can be employed by the common Joe.

Still- what kind of masks, gloves, gowns, and goggles are required for the job?

I actually came across a really interesting website this morning called PreventEbola.com. From their home page:

This web site is brand new and was established on August 3, 2014 to provide you with common-sense information on how to protect yourself and your family from the outbreak of the Ebola Virus. This site contains information that you are not being told by the media or by government officials. Sadly, no outlet in the mass media is telling anyone how to protect themselves, so we decided to do so!

And on their “How to Protect Yourself” page, the following is recommended:

• N100 or P100 filter masks
• Waterproof eye protection like swimming goggles
• Disposable latex or nitrile gloves
• Chlorhexidine gluconate hand soap/sanitizer
• 43-day supply of emergency food

N100 or P100 filter masks? Those are kind of expensive. How about N95 particulate respirators? They’re much more affordable, and I have a bunch of them socked away for household tasks and emergency situations, if needed:

3M N95 Mask
3M 8511 Particulate N95 Respirator with Valve, 10-Pack
($15.87 per 10-pack on Amazon as I type this)

Joe Alton, M.D.- aka “Dr. Bones” of Dr. Bones and Nurse Amy/The Survival Medicine Handbook-fame- just wrote on the Doom and Bloom website on July 30 in “Ebola Update”:

I recommend stocking up on masks, gowns, eye protection, and gloves, and learn about how to have an effective survival sick room.

He added later in the comment section:

The best masks are N95 or N100, the N95 are more readily available and somewhat more breathable. Masks by themselves are not enough, though, some kind of eye protection and coveralls would be useful additions to your medical storage for pandemics.

(Editor’s note: Bold added for emphasis)

From what I understand, N95 particulate respirators have also been recommended for use around Ebola by the International Association of Firefighters and American Academy of Family Physicians.

As for the rest of those protective items- they seem easy enough to source as things stand right now.

That being said, during the worldwide H1N1 pandemic of 2009, I remember watching N95 masks and hand sanitizer disappear left and right on Amazon and eBay.

In real time.

I hope I don’t witness anything like that again soon.

H10N8: New Strain Of Bird Flu May ‘Replicate Efficiently In Humans’

H10N8. I’d never heard of this new strain of bird flu until tonight, when I came across the following from Michelle Roberts on the BBC website. From earlier today:

Experts are concerned about the spread of a new strain of bird flu that has already killed one woman in China.

The 73-year-old from Nanchang City caught the H10N8 virus after visiting a live poultry market, although it is not known for sure if this was the source of infection.

A second person has since become infected in China’s Jiangxi province.

Scientists told The Lancet the potential for it to become a pandemic “should not be underestimated”.

This particular strain of influenza A virus has not been seen before…

I felt compelled to alert Survival And Prosperity readers about this particular avian influenza due to its novelty and its ability to reproduce. Roberts added:

Scientists who have studied the new H10N8 virus say it has evolved some genetic characteristics that may allow it to replicate efficiently in humans.

The concern is that it could ultimately be able to spread from person to person, although experts stress that there is no evidence of this yet…

(Editor’s note: Italics added for emphasis)

“Although experts stress that there is no evidence of this yet.”

Let’s hope it remains that way.

I haven’t heard/read too much about H10N8 in the American mainstream media.

Nor does the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website talk about this new strain of bird flu.

Stay tuned…

U.S. Pandemic Preparedness Still Lacking

It’s been seven years since I left my job in the public safety field. And back in 2006, there was already plenty of discussion in that arena about the threat posed by pandemic influenza to the United States.

I fear the nation is still not prepared to the extent that it can be for such an event, despite improvements in pandemic preparedness in the last several years.

A number of public health experts seem to agree.

I came across the following tonight by Alvin Powell on the official news website for Harvard University. Powell wrote on the Harvard Gazette on November 15:

Despite world-class hospitals and an army of highly trained medical personnel, the local health establishment doesn’t have the excess “surge” capacity to handle a flu pandemic outbreak.

And Boston isn’t alone. A panel of experts on pandemics and public health said Wednesday that not only is such capacity lacking in Boston, it is in short supply around the world and would affect everything from providing beds for the sick to the ability to make and distribute vaccines.

“There’s just little wiggle room in today’s health care system,” said Anita Barry, the director of Boston’s Infectious Disease Bureau.

Barry spoke at the Harvard School of Public Health as part of a discussion about whether heath specialists are ready to handle the next pandemic. Though many people are thinking hard about the problem and keeping an eye on worrisome developments, such as a bird flu outbreak in China that has killed 45 and an outbreak of the SARS-like Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) that has killed 64, the global capacity to handle a major outbreak is still a work in progress.

(Editor’s note: Italics added for emphasis)

Keep in mind something Klaus Stohr, vice president and global head of influenza franchises for Novartis Vaccines and Diagnostics, pointed out in the discussion. Powell wrote:

Though technology has improved production, it still takes weeks to create a new flu vaccine, months to get it to the public, and as long as a year to make it widely available around the world, Stohr said.

(Editor’s note: Italics added for emphasis)

Yet, it might require only 90 days for a pandemic flu to infect the entire United States. Robert Roy Britt wrote on the science news website LiveScience back on April 5, 2006:

A new computer model reveals how a pandemic like the avian flu might spread quickly across the United States and what methods would best thwart the scenario.

Researchers assumed a starting point of 10 highly infectious influenza cases in Los Angeles, then let the model take it from there. The virus spread quickly, peaking in just 90 days with 100 or more infections per 1,000 residents of just about every corner of the country [Animated Map]…

U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Mike Leavitt has said the country is not prepared for such a scenario.

(Editor’s note: Italics added for emphasis)

“The country is not prepared for such a scenario.”

I didn’t think so.

Resource Of The Week: HealthMap

“The world needs to be prepared for ‘unpredictable pandemics’ from viruses making the leap from animals to people, scientists in Taiwan say.

Their warning follows the first reported case of a common bird flu, H6N1, being detected in a woman, earlier this year.

The patient recovered and no other cases have been detected.

But the Lancet Respiratory Medicine report said “intensive” monitoring of bird flu was needed…”

-BBC News website, November 14, 2013

It’s been some time since I published a “Resource Of The Week.”

I apologize for that.

You may recall that the last couple of ROTW posts had to do with the monitoring of potential threats. First, there was the TESIS Geomagnetic Activity Forecast (I now find myself stopping by here every couple of days). Next, there was the National Hurricane Center website. Most recently, there was NOAA’s National Weather Service Tsunami Warning Center websites.

Tonight, I want to talk about another monitoring resource.

Enter HealthMap. From their website:

HealthMap, a team of researchers, epidemiologists and software developers at Boston Children’s Hospital founded in 2006, is an established global leader in utilizing online informal sources for disease outbreak monitoring and real-time surveillance of emerging public health threats. The freely available Web site ‘healthmap.org’ and mobile app ‘Outbreaks Near Me’ deliver real-time intelligence on a broad range of emerging infectious diseases for a diverse audience including libraries, local health departments, governments, and international travelers. HealthMap brings together disparate data sources, including online news aggregators, eyewitness reports, expert-curated discussions and validated official reports, to achieve a unified and comprehensive view of the current global state of infectious diseases and their effect on human and animal health. Through an automated process, updating 24/7/365, the system monitors, organizes, integrates, filters, visualizes and disseminates online information about emerging diseases in nine languages, facilitating early detection of global public health threats.

(Editor’s note: Italics added for emphasis)

Playing around a bit with it tonight, HealthMap looks to be a promising tool for monitoring emerging public health dangers. Especially as it has an alert capability. From the “Mobile” area of the website:

Outbreaks Near Me

With HealthMap’s Outbreaks Near Me application, you have all of HealthMap’s latest real-time disease outbreak information at your fingertips. Open the app and see all current outbreaks in your neighborhood, including news about H1N1 influenza (“swine flu”). Search and browse outbreak reports on the interactive map, and set up the app to alert you with a notice automatically whenever an outbreak is occurring in your area. If you know of an outbreak not yet on the map, be the first to report it using the app’s unique outbreak reporting feature. You will be credited and your report will be featured on the website.

(Editor’s note: Italics added for emphasis)

When it comes to a pandemic, it’s always nice to have the skinny on the developing event in case you need to get some last-minute preps for you and your loved ones. HealthMap might be an effective early-warning system in this respect.

Check it out here.

On TV: All-New Doomsday Preppers Episodes Start On August 13

As of last week, I think I’ve finally watched every episode of National Geographic Channel’s Doomsday Preppers that ever aired.

I saw the pilot and subsequently blogged about it two years ago. While I thought the initial show was really interesting, I never thought the TV series would be the big hit it has become for Nat Geo Channel.

In fact, I credit Doomsday Preppers with being a driving force behind the spread of “prepping.”

It’s been a while since new episodes of the prepper/survivalist-theme television series have aired.

But that’s about to change. From a National Geographic Channel press release back on July 19:

BATTEN DOWN THE HATCHES, GRAB YOUR BUG-OUT BAG AND PREPARE TO “BUNKER” DOWN

Beat the Apocalyptic Heat by Staying Cool with All-New Summer Episodes of National Geographic Channel’s Hit Series Doomsday Preppers

Four Weeks of Premieres begins Tuesday, August 13, at 9 PM ET/PT

(Washington, DC – July 19, 2013) With summer in full swing, Mother Nature can be unpredictable – from hurricanes and tornadoes to heat waves and raging forest fires – the season calls for extra preparedness. And whether you buy a few bottles of water to keep in the basement, stock up on toilet paper at Costco or buy an extra gallon of milk “just in case,” there’s a little bit of prepper in all of us. But some people are working around the clock to ensure their families remain safe from disaster – going to extremes to make sure that, if doomsday hits, they won’t be left in the dust.

Beginning Tuesday, August 13, at 9 p.m. ET/PT, National Geographic Channel’s wildly popular series Doomsday Preppers is back with four weeks of premieres. Go inside the lives of the ordinary Americans, from all walks and from all across the country, who are taking whatever measures necessary to prepare for what they believe is the end of the world as we know it. For more information, visit www.natgeotv.com/doomsday and follow us on Twitter at @NGC_PR.

This summer, visit “the Colony” – a compound prepared to sustain 25 people, all unified with the single purpose of surviving doomsday – as the leader prepares his young son to someday take the reins. Meet a prepper with an RV buried 12 feet below the ground and stocked with enough food to last three or four years and more than 1,000 gallons of water. But if an “end of days” asteroid hits, will it be enough to survive the expected harsh winter conditions? And some preppers fear that World War III is on the horizon. Meet a former Marine who plans to stay safe with a private army of German Shepherd attack dogs, and two skateboarder preppers who are taking a more pacifist approach.

Summer episodes of Doomsday Preppers include:

Doomsday Preppers: Don’t Betray the Colony Premieres Tuesday, August 13, at 9 p.m. ET/PT Some preppers believe in safety in numbers – as is the case for Jeff Mann, who leads “the Colony,” a community of 25 preppers unified with the single purpose of surviving doomsday. Watch as he prepares his son, Colten, to take the reins by having him hunt down live boar in the Florida swamps and builds the Colony’s very own gallows – an important message that there are laws to be upheld, even in times of chaos. An independent prepper, Tony, believes an “end of days” asteroid will turn the Earth into an inhospitable ash of its former self. Despite stocking his RV with three to four years’ worth of food and more than 1,000 gallons of water, the harsh winters of a post-asteroid collision might be too much for Tony’s bug-out plan. In the foothills of California’s Sierra Mountains, Cheree and her family run a Christian camp by day and a prepper getaway by night. After a dispute about the use of violence, a democratic vote puts one member at odds – the punishment: exile.

Doomsday Preppers: The Gates of Hell Premieres Tuesday, August 20, at 9 p.m. ET/PT An economic collapse could mean total chaos for the U.S. – looting, riots and civil unrest are top concerns. In Washington state, Steve works with a stern hand to prep his family for the potential threat. Each weekend, the family leaves suburbia and travels to their bug-out location to practice defense maneuvers and run drills that involve explosives. South Carolinian David Appleton is a comedian, but the idea of a devastating earthquake is no joke to him. His job doesn’t always pay the bills, so David must Dumpster dive to find supplies to make a DIY camouflage net to hide his preps. Life coach Suzanne and her life partner barter around town for supplies to prepare for an economic collapse. An experienced marksman puts Suzanne through a grueling test so she can improve her defense preps – and all she uses is a paintball gun.

Doomsday Preppers: Whatever It Takes Premieres Tuesday, August 27, at 9 p.m. ET/PT Could an explosion on the surface of the sun cause mayhem on Earth? Jason and Jacob are a father-son team from Alabama who are prepping for exactly that: a global solar flare with the potential to wipe out power grids around the world. Jason was almost stranded for good in the wilderness when he was 19, but that will not stop him from prepping in those very same woods by molding his own ammunition and preparing his 20-piece bug-out pack. In Arizona, the Moffatt family teaches their seven children essential survival skills in the event of the collapse of the American economy. In another doomsday scenario, Mike and Grayson are organizing and prepping for the possibility of World War III. While Mike has his Navy training to fall back on, Grayson is hesitant to get away from his pacifist roots.

Doomsday Preppers: People Become Animals Premieres Tuesday, September 3, at 9 p.m. ET/PT The possibility of World War III is a major concern for many preppers, including former Marine Alex Dunbar, who is training a private army of German Shepherd attack dogs in San Luis, Colorado. He firmly believes that his pack can face any challenge a new world war would bring. In the woods of East Appalachia, Brenda McSwigan fears that a vicious mutating virus will lead to a pandemic that will overwhelm hospitals and leave the rest of the country in chaos. To prepare, she’s building a secluded mountain retreat complete with a 400-watt solar panel, a quarantine zone and a year’s supply of food. Brenda will open up the doors of her oasis for about two dozen lucky refugees – anyone after that will face the looming plague alone. Another prepper, Grace McLeod, is a retired police officer whose goal is to secure her 3,500 square-foot fortress before the American economy collapses. To do this, Grace and her husband install a drawbridge, hire a professional prepping consulting team and reinforce the doors.

Doomsday Preppers is produced by Sharp Entertainment for National Geographic Channel (NGC). For Sharp Entertainment, executive producer is Matt Sharp; co-executive producer is Alan Madison; vice president of production is Dan Adler. For NGC, executive producer is Kathleen Cromley; vice president, production & development is Charlie Parsons; senior vice president, production & development is Noel Siegel; president is Howard Owens.

Pandemic Potential? H7N9 Bird Flu And Novel Coronavirus

Back on April 19, I asked if readers were paying attention to the spread of the H7N9 bird flu virus in China.

That followed a similar post from February 18 about the novel coronavirus (nCoV).

Here’s the latest regarding these deadly respiratory viruses. From the CBS News website Monday morning:

Two outbreaks of new, deadly respiratory infections in two different parts of the world have international health officials on edge, actively researching how to stay head of the new diseases.

In recent months, an outbreak of a new strain of bird flu called H7N9 has hit China while a new coronavirus that first appeared last year has been infecting an increasing number of people in the Middle East — and now Europe.

Last week, the coronavirus related to SARS spread to France, where one patient who probably caught the disease in Dubai infected his hospital roommate. Officials are now trying to track down everyone who went on a tour group holiday to Dubai with the first patient as well as all contacts of the second patient. Since it was first spotted last year, the new coronavirus has infected 34 people, killing 18 of them. Nearly all had some connection to the Middle East.

CBS ran a follow-up article about the novel coronavirus this afternoon. From that later piece:

Saudi Arabia has confirmed four new cases of a deadly new respiratory virus related to SARS that appears centered in the Arabian Peninsula but that has also been reported in Europe…

Other cases have appeared in France, Germany and Britain, possibly linked to travel in the Gulf region.

While the novel coronavirus has infected 34 and killed 18 since last September, the H7N9 bird flu strain in China has infected 131 and killed 32 since March.

So, do either of these viruses have pandemic potential? Possibly. Consider what the World Health Organization (WHO) said in Monday’s CBS piece:

WHO, which is closely monitoring the viruses, says both have the potential to cause a pandemic — a global epidemic — if they evolve into a form easily spread between people.

So far, that doesn’t seem to be the case. And luckily for us, there are no reports of anyone in United States getting infected and sick with either H7N9 or the novel coronavirus.

Just as well, as there are no specific treatments for illnesses caused by the novel coronavirus, according the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website. However, the CDC does say this about treating illnesses caused by the H7N9 avian flu:

CDC received an H7N9 virus sample from China on April 11. Antiviral resistance testing on the first virus isolate at CDC has been completed and indicates that this virus would be sensitive (susceptible) to the two influenza antiviral drugs that are used to treat seasonal flu: the neuraminidase inhibitors oseltamivir (Tamiflu®) and zanamivir (Relenza®)

For more information about these viruses, you can visit the CDC website here (novel coronavirus) and here (H7N9).
