self-sufficiency

Resource Of The Week: In The Rabbit Hole Urban Survival Podcast

In yesterday’s post I talked about modern survivalist Jack Spirko and his advice for dealing with this election cycle’s intensifying insanity. I mentioned Spirko is the long-time host of The Survival Podcast, which I named a “Resource Of The Week” all the way back on March 4, 2011. Great stuff, and I still cherry-pick from the latest episodes posted on the TSP website on a regular basis.

There’s one other prepper/survival-related podcast I listen to these days:

In The Rabbit Hole Urban Survival Podcast

From the podcast section of the ITRH website:

After years of being frustrated that no one was fully addressing the concerns of urban survivalists, Aaron [Frankel] and Jonathan [Kanarek] took to the web and founded In The Rabbit Hole in February of 2010. Shortly after they’re long time friend and accomplice Jason joined the show to add a touch of “Red Neck Cajun”. Since then the show has enjoyed many great guests and a wide range of topics.

They are three city boys with a lifetime affinity for the outdoors, but a love of the city, passion for survival topics, and Libertarian Ideals…

“In The Rabbit Hole is about focusing first on the things that matter most: What’s likely to happen. Then preparing for it in a rational and productive way.”

These priorities of urban survival come from the focal points of Community, Health and Intelligence–referred to as “Survival CHI”.

Through a weekly podcast and articles, Aaron, Jonathan, and Jason remind people to “Stay safe and sound”. (Safe in person and sound in mind.)

From the Lone Star State, the trio reach out to people who are interested in taking personal responsibility for their own safety and well-being…

…And who just happen to live in the city.

While not a “long-time listener” to the podcast, I’ve noticed it’s not just urban preppers/survivalists who could learn a thing or two from the material presented. The ITRH site adds:

Hosts Aaron, Jason, and Jonathan cover topics such as:

Self Sufficiency
Food Storage
Homesteading in the city
Survival Book, Video, and Gear Reviews
Starting Off as a New Prepper
Financial Survival
Self Reliance
Preparing for Natural Disasters
Emergency Medicine
Firearms, Guns, and things that go bang
Self Defense
Disaster Psychology

Surveying the latest episodes listed on the ITRH website, episode 191, “Surviving Refugee Hell” (posted October 17)- with James Price, Founder/Director of Humanitarian Aid Security Forces (HASF)- sounds like my next listen.

Interested in tuning-in too? Head on over to the In The Rabbit Hole Urban Survival Podcast website here.

But before you do, there’s also this from the ITRH gang:

Not sure where to begin?

Two of ITRH’s most acclaimed episodes that paint a clear picture of what the Podcast is about are:

TEOTWAWKI Reality Check: What do you really need to be prepping for.

Survival CHI- Reloaded: The foundational principles of ITRH.

Indiana Prepper & Survival Expo To Be Held May 2-3 In Valparaiso

Chicago-area blog readers- I know of two preparedness/survival-related shows planned for May next door in Indiana. The first of these is the Indiana Prepper & Survival Expo, billed as the “largest preparedness and sustainable living event in Indiana.” From the Prepper Shows USA website:

INDIANA PREPPER & SURVIVAL EXPO
Porter County Expo Center
Valparaiso, Indiana
May 02 – May 03

Live Free USA is proud to announce the first major preparedness expo in NW Indiana since the 1980s. This event affords the opportunity for regional vendors to display and sell their products and services. Preparedness and self-reliance practitioners will be able to purchase a wide variety of equipment while building their skills and networking with like-mined families. A full schedule of speakers on disaster preparedness, emergency response, and sustainable living will be available.

A “Meet up Tent” will afford great ways to network or join regional groups. A farmers market will also be on-site.

Live Free USA has worked hard to bring this event to NW Indiana. We will have major exhibits and speakers there and opportunities to join and attended additional events and training.

For full information go to: WWW.Wisconsinpreppersexpo.com
or call 920-573-5903

There’s a typo in that website address. The expo website is actually located here.

The event also has a Facebook page, where I learned admission is free.

I’ll talk about that second Indiana prepper show tomorrow…

Chicago School Of Wilderness Skills Offering Winter Survival, Other Classes In February

Earlier this week I blogged about a sword and knife forging class being taught this weekend in Chicago. From poking around the Dabble website, I discovered the instructor of that course- Chris Mayor- is also the founder of the Chicago School of Wilderness Skills. From the organization’s website:

The Chicago School Of Wilderness Skills was founded for two reasons. First, to empower individuals by offering various classes and training intended to increase their level of self sufficiency and provide them with the ability to live well in nature without the safety net of modern society. Our second purpose is to facilitate and promote engagement and awareness of the world around us as well as encourage direct involvement with our ecology as both a form of activism and a solution to the social and environmental crises wrought by the lifestyle choices of our society. Until the perspectives that exclude us from the ecology around us are altered, to the extent that when we look at our habitations they won’t sit outside the boundaries of nature, sustainability will remain an elusive thought.

A Dabble instructor bio for Mayor reveals his bushcraft expertise. From Dabble.co:

A veteran forager and outdoorsman, Chris has spent over a decade developing his knowledge and practice of wilderness skills, wild foods, and primitive arts. And as the founder of the Chicago School Of Wilderness Skills he’s spent several years sharing his knowledge and passion for wild spaces. Other then his educational experience Chris also supplies foraged wild foods to several chicago area restaurants and caterers, and offers consultations.

Being a school, there’s bound to be instruction. And according to their “Calendar Of Events” page, there’s a one-day winter survival class being held on February 7 in the Rogers Park neighborhood of Chicago. From the calendar:

winter survival

Saturday, February 7, 2015
11:30am-4:00pm

winter survival class with Vincent Hawkings . class cost 25 $. at loyola beach park. bring appropriate clothes and supplies

Later next month, I see a “wild foods in the kitchen” class and “wild foods: foraging tour” being offered, with both events having Chris Mayor at the helm.

All of this instruction sounds really interesting, highly useful, and potentially very tasty. For more information, head on over to the Chicago School Of Wilderness Skills website here.

Survivalism ‘Shouldn’t Come With A Bad Reputation’

“Survivalism: The stark ideology that may have led to killing of a Pennsylvania state trooper”

-Actual headline on the Washington Post website, September 17, 2014

“I love publishing material that readers can sink their teeth into and learn a lot from. I hope to do a lot more of it when things calm down on my end. At the same time, I will blog about some topics that might not be so informative- like prepping as a form of insurance, for example. Why’s that? It depends on the situation really. But in the case of “Prepping As Insurance,” I’m disappointed in how the mainstream media often portrays preppers/survivalists. Many times, the so-called Fourth Estate equates preparedness with anti-social behavior, paranoia (sound familiar?), and/or domestic terrorism. I like to point out that emergency preparedness (something Uncle Sam/other levels of government actively push- even while demonizing it in some instances) can be thought of as another form of insurance and one of our civic duties as American citizens (the emphasis on self-reliance/sufficiency frees up public safety resources in major emergencies) by its practitioners. Letting the idea fester in our society that prepping is BAD could ultimately result in way too many helpless Americans in a SHTF situation. My intention with this post- while not really one that is chock-full of knowledge- is to help torpedo that dangerous idea with hopes (dreams?) of a more resilient society once again.”

-One of my comments in a discussion about last Friday’s Survival And Prosperity post entitled “Prepping As Insurance”

I’ve always thought any negative associations with prepping/survivalism stemming from related “reality” TV shows like National Geographic Channel’s Doomsday Preppers were essentially harmless. As they were rolling out a couple of years ago, I trusted people would be able to figure out it’s only entertainment television– with some useful knowledge thrown in to keep more “demanding” viewers coming back for more. Entertainment TV with a good deal of shock and awe to ratchet up ratings and score as many advertising dollars as possible.

Several years on, and plenty of critics- particularly in the mainstream media- of preparedness/survivalism base their view at least in part of what they’ve seen on TV.

Doomsday Preppers Toilet Paper

Doomsday Preppers Toilet Paper

They just don’t get it. And if you ask me, in many cases it’s because they’ve haven’t researched the subject thoroughly enough (either by choice or lack of time).

And the ones that do but who still try and push the goofy idea that most- if not all- preppers/survivalists are authority-hating, machine gun-toting, wannabe special forces types who are two sandwiches short of a picnic and long for the end of the world (note I’m not including “as we know it” here) to remake it in their own image- well, don’t forget they’ve got newspapers/other media products to sell.

So it was with some relief that I encountered the following article yesterday on the WFMZ-TV 69 News (Allentown, Pennsylvania) website. Talking about the ongoing manhunt for alleged cop killer Eric Frein, 69 News staff wrote:

This weekend, 69 News spoke with the chief of the Greater Philadelphia Search and Rescue about survivalists.

Mark Hopkins believes Frein will be able to evade police for a period of time, but police will catch up with him.

He says to a degree, everyone is a bit of a survivalist, and that description shouldn’t come with a bad reputation.

“I wouldn’t want to see that lumped together and think that all survivalists or all people that are doing this prepping stuff want to hurt people, because that’s not the case; this is clearly an outlawry,” Hopkins said…

(Editor’s note: Bold added for emphasis)

“Everyone is a bit of a survivalist, and that description shouldn’t come with a bad reputation.”

Something the “haters” would do well to remember. But probably won’t, or choose not to out of self-interest or something else.

USDA: Food Prices Expected To Rise 2.5 To 3.5 Percent In 2014

It’s not only prices at the pump that are going up these days where I live.

From what I’ve seen, food prices keep rising as well (while portions continue to shrink).

And it looks to continue that way in 2014. Ros Krasny reported on the Reuters website Tuesday:

U.S. food prices are expected to rise more rapidly this year after a very tame 2013, led by gains in beef, poultry and egg prices, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said on Tuesday.

The food price inflation outlook assumes normal weather, the USDA said, adding that the California drought poses a risk of bigger increases in many food categories, and that high supermarket prices for beef are “here to stay.”

Various measures, including overall food, food-at-home and food-away-from-home prices, are expected to rise by 2.5 to 3.5 percent in 2014. The consumer price index for all food prices rose by 1.4 percent in 2013…

(Editor’s note: Bold added for emphasis)

Krasny added that according to the USDA, prices at the supermarket have risen by an average of 2.8 percent annually since 1990.

I blogged about potential avenues for saving in this area back on March 10, 2011, and March 23, 2013.

Seeing that a landscaper is scheduled to stop by tomorrow, now’s as good a time as any to formulate a plan for fighting higher food costs while moving towards food self-sufficiency here in the Chicago suburbs. I’ll fill you in on what I’ve come up with in a future “Project Prepper” post (starting up again next week).

Milestone: Survival And Prosperity Reaches 2,000 Posts

Yesterday was a milestone for Survival And Prosperity:

2,000 posts have now been published on the blog

Not bad considering the weblog was started a little less than three-and-a-half years ago.

My previous flagship blog, Boom2Bust.com, “The Most Hated Blog On Wall Street,” only reached around 1,500 posts.

I think a little celebration is called for, don’t you?

“Clerks Dance”
YouTube Video

There’s lots more blogging to be done. Washington and the Fed has managed to “kick the can down the road” this far, and while the economic picture might look rosy to many for a bit longer, I’m still not deviating from that prediction I made back on Memorial Day Weekend 2007 about a U.S. financial crash.

In fact, I believe we’ve already started into the descent. And gradually, the U.S. economy and larger financial system that is weighed down by tremendous debt and steered by greed, arrogance, and incompetence will eventually crash hard.

That being said, America has been here before (Great Depression). And I do see the country getting back on firm economic ground again. But only after the excesses off a multi-decade debt binge are effectively purged.

No “doomsday,” but definitely a “financial reckoning day.”

In the meantime, it’s probably wise to take advantage of the present situation to prepare for what I see is in store for the country down the road. Whether that means finding a line of work that’s more stable or acquiring more income to preserve one’s standard of living in hard times, it’s something one may want to look into and take action on while it’s still possible to do so. Of course, individual circumstances vary. Still, improving one’s self-sufficiency- even incrementally- can make a big difference in an emergency or major crisis. It’s something our predecessors in this great nation of ours understood and practiced, but unfortunately has fallen by the wayside in modern times.

Survival and prosperity. That’s what this blog continues to be all about.

Free Online Survival Training Summit Starts January 20

Speaking of survival instruction tonight, what do you have planned next week? You see, I got an e-mail last week from someone involved with The Survival Summit, billed as a “FREE, five-day, online training summit where 25 of the world’s most sought-after experts on Survival and Self Reliance will be teaching online classes.” The online event is scheduled to take place starting next Monday, January 20, and continues until January 26. From the Summit’s website:

Join Us For The SURVIVAL Summit?

January 20-26th, 2014

This January, the founders of The Prepper Project will be hosting an exclusive online event that we’re calling ‘The Survival Summit’:

It’s going to be a FREE, five-day, online training summit where 25 of the world’s most sought-after experts on Survival and Self Reliance will be teaching online classes, giving you 5 solid days and over 24 hours of training and strategies with the single focus of keeping your family alive, safe, and fed during a triggered societal collapse.

Topics we’ll be covering during this 5-day event will include:

• How to develop a STRONG ‘Protection Triad’ with detailed Property Security & Threat Planning… Water, Energy, & Fuel Systems… and Self-Reliant Food Production & Storage.
• How to grow your own food supply, without fertilizers, pesticides, or even irrigation. Even if you live in an arid climate.
• How to spot the ideal homestead or survival retreat locations.
• Building concepts for hiding your home in the wilderness.
• Blueprints for setting up your property with its own off-grid water and energy supply.
• Trapping secrets for protecting crops like corn from being stolen by Raccoons, or potatoes from being ravaged by voles.
• How to feed & clothe your family by trapping like the settlers.
• How to protect your loved ones in a world where the police are no longer coming to your rescue.
• Different strategies for defending a suburban versus rural home or property from looters or armed gangs.
• How to fortify your home from being breached. And the skills you need to know to escape from an unlawful restraint or kidnapping.
• Off-grid medical techniques, herbal remedies for fighting potential flu pandemics, how to legally create your own renewable fuels, and much, much more.

And that’s really just the beginning!

Sign up to attend The Survival Summit that kicks off on Monday, January 20th by entering your email address in the form below now, and we’ll send you more details about our speaker lineup in the weeks ahead.

Again, this event is completely FREE to attend!

And you can watch all 25 of the presenters completely online from your home computer, provided you have a secure high speed Internet connection.

So there’s no traveling to a central location; your privacy and identity remain protected.

But again, we want to emphasize, only those who register in advance by entering their names and emails addresses will be told how and where to attend this event.

We won’t be publicly broadcasting these details across the Internet.

So if you know of someone who could benefit from joining this conversation with us, please direct them to this page to register as well.

We Hope You’ll Join Us For The Week of January 20th.

“The Survival Summit”
YouTube Video

I took a quick look at the list of preparedness-related experts booked for the Summit. I’m familiar with the work of a number of them, and I’m impressed they’ll be a part of this project. So much so I might have to schedule my blogging and other activities around viewing the Summit presentations next week.

Now, if you’re like me, when someone uses the word “free” in a pitch, a red flag is raised. How can all this online instruction be free? From the website’s FAQ page:

Each day, a couple of presentations will be posted on the summit website and will be available during the day for people to watch absolutely free. It’s much like if you were attending a regular convention. After the day is over the presentations will no longer be available to watch for free but will be available for purchase as part of the summit upgrade package.

(Editor’s note: Italics added for emphasis)

A summit upgrade package. That’s how The Survival Summit can offer this material for free.

If the “online classes” are as good as I and others hope they are (which wouldn’t be much of a stretch consider the experts involved in the Summit), I can see those packages selling rather well as a resource to refer back to down the road.

Next Monday, January 20, The Survival Summit begins. Register now to book a place at this special online event.

Click on the following banner ad to go to the Summit’s website. If you register for the event via this link and eventually purchase a summit upgrade package, I receive a commission from the sale.
