Indiana Prepper & Survival Expo To Be Held May 2-3 In Valparaiso

Chicago-area blog readers- I know of two preparedness/survival-related shows planned for May next door in Indiana. The first of these is the Indiana Prepper & Survival Expo, billed as the “largest preparedness and sustainable living event in Indiana.” From the Prepper Shows USA website:

INDIANA PREPPER & SURVIVAL EXPO
Porter County Expo Center
Valparaiso, Indiana
May 02 – May 03

Live Free USA is proud to announce the first major preparedness expo in NW Indiana since the 1980s. This event affords the opportunity for regional vendors to display and sell their products and services. Preparedness and self-reliance practitioners will be able to purchase a wide variety of equipment while building their skills and networking with like-mined families. A full schedule of speakers on disaster preparedness, emergency response, and sustainable living will be available.

A “Meet up Tent” will afford great ways to network or join regional groups. A farmers market will also be on-site.

Live Free USA has worked hard to bring this event to NW Indiana. We will have major exhibits and speakers there and opportunities to join and attended additional events and training.

For full information go to: WWW.Wisconsinpreppersexpo.com
or call 920-573-5903

There’s a typo in that website address. The expo website is actually located here.

The event also has a Facebook page, where I learned admission is free.

I’ll talk about that second Indiana prepper show tomorrow…

Great Lakes Emergency Preparedness Expo To Be Held In Birch Run, Michigan, On April 11

This week, I plan to get a jump on blogging about April survival-related training in the Chicago area. But before I begin, here’s an educational opportunity two weekends from now some local readers might decide is worth the road trip. From the Prepper Shows USA website:

The Great Lakes Emergency Preparedness Expo is back again! The show will be on April 11, 2015 at the Birch Run Expo Center in Birch Run, MI. This show is full of survival gear, options for living off the grid, self-sustainability, farming, alternative energy, literature and much more! Our exhibitors will have many products for sale and there will be speakers who are experts in their field there to share their knowledge. The show is FREE to the public and a must-attend for anybody looking for ways to keep their home and family safe, from those new to preparedness to hardcore prepping enthusiasts…

(Editor’s note: Bold added for emphasis)

I understand a second Great Lakes Emergency Preparedness Expo is planned for Erie, Pennsylvania, on May 9. For more information about either event, you can visit their website here.

Is This What A Prepper Expo Is Really Like?

Speaking of preparedness/survival-themed events tonight, I have to ask readers- has anyone ever been to one of these prepper/survivalist expos or conferences?

I haven’t, but would like to one of these days.

I recently read what seemed like an insightful article on these gatherings on the Fortune magazine website. David Morris wrote back on November 11:

More and more Americans are spending money to get ready for an uncertain future — gathering food, water, tools, and skills to help them weather anything from a hurricane to a pandemic. Contrary to images of deluded or gun-obsessed “lone wolves,” many preppers are average consumers reacting to concrete worries, and their way of thinking is spreading, fueling an emerging lifestyle trend. That lifestyle is generating demand for a broad spectrum of products offering survival — or even comfort — when large-scale systems go down.

An array of preparedness expos and conferences have cropped up around the country to serve this emerging and fast-changing market…

“Learning to survive: Arizona Survivalist Prepper Expo comes to Tucson”
YouTube Video

I wanted to bring up the Fortune article because I thought not only might you be interested in reading it, but also because I wanted to know if the author’s experience isn’t uncommon.

For example, Morris added in his piece:

At the end of my conversation with John Egger about the rise of “suburban homesteading,” a man with a white shock of hair interjected himself into the conversation. “You know what chemtrails are?” he asked, referring to another conspiracist trope that sees chemical tampering in jetstream vapor trails. “They’re changing the weather, then selling drought tolerant seeds. George Soros and Bill Gates are behind it.” Egger nodded politely and smiled, tolerant of a potential customer’s eccentricities.

“Conspiracist trope”

Correct me if I’m wrong, but weren’t certain people saying the same thing about talk that the U.S. government was spying on its own law-abiding citizens, not to mention those of other nations?

You can read the entire Fortune article on their website here. And please feel free to chime in about your day/weekend at a prepper expo or something similar.
