Active Shooter Drill At Chicago’s Wrigley Field Thursday

While looking for the latest on Chicago’s debt crisis from Fran Spielman (Chicago Sun-Times), I spotted this on the newspaper’s website Wednesday afternoon:

One week after a lone gunman opened fire on police officers securing a Black Lives Matter protest in Dallas, emergency responders in Chicago will simulate an “active shooter” situation at Wrigley Field.

The emergency preparedness drill involving “simulated ammunition and flashbangs” will be held between 7 a.m. and 2 p.m. Thursday, prompting street closings around the stadium…

(Editor’s note: Bold added for emphasis)

Spielman reported Waveland Avenue, from Clinton to Kenmore, will be closed to both vehicle/pedestrian traffic while the exercise takes place. The drill will involve the Chicago Fire Department, Chicago Police Department, and the city’s Office of Emergency Management and Communications (OEMC).

Chicago Gone Wild: Mob Attack In Wrigleyville

My girlfriend mentioned the following comment to me late last night. From the unofficial Chicago Police Department blog Second City Cop on Sunday:

Hey SCC here’s one for yah. Talked to a buddy from 19. Said a group of male blacks were walking in Wrigleyville on Saturday night down Clark st punching and kicking any white person they saw including females. Said a few citizens were knocked on their asses. It gets better….a couple of the victims were off duty coppers! Supposedly these animals were part of a separate group that was in a limo supposedly filming themselves attacking people…

Limo? Filming? Wrigleyville? Yeah, right. Sounds like someone is having fun with the whole wilding/flash mob/mob action/mob attack thing going on in Chicago these days.

And then the following appeared on the websites of the local papers this morning. From the Chicago Sun-Times:

Four men were charged early Monday in connection with a Wrigleyville beating early Sunday that left four injured – including a police officer…

Three men — ages 22, 27 and 27 — were hurt when a group of men attacked them in the 3400 block of North Sheffield Avenue at about 1:09 a.m. Sunday, according to police News Affairs Officer Daniel O’Brien.

Witnesses told police that the attackers got out of a white stretch limo and began battering people standing nearby on the street, O’Brien said. The witnesses said people left in the limo were filming the attackers as they punched the victims.

“Filming the attackers as they punched the victims.” Let me guess what they were going to call this little hate project- Chicago Gone Wild? And from the Chicago Tribune:

Four men are accused of bailing out of a white stretch limousine and punching three people, breaking one man’s jaw, in the Lakeview neighborhood as someone with the attackers recorded the beating, authorities said this morning.

A Chicago police officer was slightly injured while arresting the men, officials said.

The beating happened about 1:10 a.m. Sunday at Clark Street and Cornelia Avenue, just south of Wrigley Field, police said. Several people jumped out of a stretch limousine and started punching another group of people, according to Chicago News Affairs Officer Daniel O’Brien…

Officers were flagged down by witnesses, who pointed out some of the attackers, including one man not wearing a shirt, police said. One officer hurt his knee when one of the attackers swung at the officer and wrestled with him, O’Brien said…

The person who recorded the beating was with the attackers but was not arrested. Police said the other attackers either fled in the limousine or on foot.

News of what took place Sunday in the hip neighborhood adjacent to the historical ballpark where the Chicago Cubs play is going national as I type this. I see the story has already been picked up by FOX News and the Huffington Post on their websites.

This violence comes on the heels of a report by Tribune staff concerning recent robberies in the city’s historic commercial center. From the paper’s website on July 5:

Police today issued a community alert warning of “an increase in robbery-related incidents” in June in the Loop area.

The alert lists four attacks in the Central District, saying the victims were approached from behind while walking on the sidewalk and their property taken by force.

Various descriptions have been given for the attackers, but all have been males in their late teens or early 20s, police said.

According to the alert, the attacks happed at:
— 42 E. Adams on June 20 at 1:50 a.m.
— 71 W. Van Buren on June 21 at 1:15 a.m.
— 180 N. Wabash on June 26 at 11:40 p.m.
— 160 N. Wells on June 30 at 12:43 a.m.

Two things come to mind here:

1. More often than not, nothing good happens after midnight. Especially here in the “concrete jungle.”

2. This high-profile act of violence is certain to make a number of people think twice about visiting the Windy City. And some will decide not to. Whoosh. Hear that? That’s much-needed revenue going down the drain. Although I’d rather it be these punks getting swirlies down at the 19th District… among other things.

It’ll be interesting to see if/how Mayor Emanuel and City Hall respond to Sunday’s “mob attack.”

Stay tuned…
